FIBA to Propose Olympic 3-On-3 Basketball

Three-on-three basketball in the Olympic Games? Hmm, yup. FIBA, the international governing body of the Olympics, is planning to propose the new event, with hopes of implementing it as early as the 2016 Rio Games. More details, via USA Today: “Secretary-general Patrick Baumann said Saturday that his group planned to propose it to be played as early as the 2016 Rio Games. Three-on-three, the game played in driveways, on playgrounds and around the country during the annual Gus Macker tournaments, debuted in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. After rankings determine the top teams worldwide, Baumann said, each nation would be responsible for creating a format to determine which team it would send to the Olympics. Baumann reasoned that three-on-three would allow more countries to experience the Olympics and help FIBA expand basketball’s global popularity. He said smaller basketball nations regularly send teams to the three-on-three world championship.”

Awesome. My friends and I were having a competition to draft All-Time 3 on three teams. The rules were 1) you could pick AT MOST one HOFer or consensus future HOFer, 2) you could pick one all star that’s not a HOFer, 3) one guy that’s not an all-star, and 4) one bench player that’s not an all-star.

So for example you could pick D-Wade/LeBron from his rookie season and that would count as your guy that’s not a HOFer (but obviously he wouldn’t be as good).

I chose 1) MJ 2) Iggy 3) Ibaka. Kyrie Irving was the sub. I think I have pretty much all the bases covered. Who do you guys have?

Bone Collector, Special FX and Springs can win this. AO or Air up There coming off the bench.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    @ Jay,

MJ, Chris Bosh, Kyrie Irving. John Wall or E Gordon off the bench.

  • Jason

seems like a really wierd idea, is 3 on 3 bball even an official sport? would they have to invent rules in order to standardize it? y’ll know 3 on 3 and 21 rules differ a lor from country to coutry

  • bike

Why stop there? How about making a game of HORSE an Olympic event?

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

2-on-2 would be better. They could do male and female 2-on-2 and mixed 2-on-2 with teams of a guy and a girl like they do with mixed doubles in tennis

  • http://facebook.ccm/officialteamawesome brownjesus

How about American 21 as an Olympic event? Jesus this is worse than beach volleyball

  • CorySP8

    It’ll be better than handball.

    I love this!!
The rules are online, just type in ‘FIBA3′ on wikipedia.
Regarding what jay said, my team would be:
    Rajon Rondo

  • LA Huey

    LBJ, KD, Dwight, LA Huey
This is cool. Too bad NBC would fail to make this very visible.

@ Allenp: Why you hating on gymnastics? Do you see the crazy sh!t they do with those hula hoops??

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Wayno at 1235 was me. What?
The hoops snob in me doesn’t like this, but the olympics are such a collection of yard activities, this might as well be included.
It would be fun, no doubt.

  • wixurrs

Allen Iverson gets his first gold medal! Hell AI playing streetball could win gold in 2020 too.

  • Carroll

Yao Ming, Durant, Derrick Rose. Being a team player, I’ll come off the bench. But if my knees are too sore leading up to the games, I would sit out and let John Wall get a little Olympic action

  • LA Huey

I hear you, Tarzan. But if they’re including Beach Volleyball separate from Indoor Volleyball and ALL those different swimming events, you might as well.

  • Lloyd

This would be cool. I always thought they should implement a 3 on 3 tourney during all-star weekend and take out some of that other garbage. Each team sends a squad. Would give fans of the under achieving teams something to cheer about on that weekend.

  • http://slamonline dan

all time – Shaq, MJ, Iverson

  • Rasheed

Sounds like another gold medal for the US. Why not?

  • Mike From Spain

  • http://mvp247.com Greg Tanner

This news is MAD old. I wrote an article about this a year ago – and it wasn’t even entirely new then!

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

This was one of the signature events at the Singapore youth olympics 2010. Tickets were very hard to come by and games were televised from an early stage of the competition.
Serbia beat the US in the men’s final with a combo of outside shooting, better D and less turnovers/mistakes.
This with NBA level talent would be BONKERS! Forget NBA level talent, just the national selection process would boost bball in most countries.
