Elite Recruit Karl Towns Commits to Kentucky, Reclassifies to 2014

He did it again. John Calipari and his Kentucky Wildcats landed yet another no. 1  player from a recruiting class. This time it’s Karl Towns Jr, a 6-11 versatile center from New jersey who was unanimously considered the top sophomore in the country–”was” only because he is now a junior after also announcing he’s reclassifying one grade up. But his college decision shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, considering that Towns played for the Dominican Republic’s men’s national team this past summer, for which Kentucky’s John Calipari was the head coach—meaning Towns spent so quality time with the coach and probably knows him better than any of the other coaches that were recruiting him. Dynasty? From the Star-Ledger: “Karl Towns Jr. of St. Joseph (Metuchen), ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the nation for the class of 2015 by scout.com and other recruiting services, announced he will play for Kentucky at the next level. Towns made the announcement during a press conference at the Metuchen school on Tuesday. Towns, a 7-foot sophomore who played with and against NBA players as a member of the Dominican National Team last summer, will play for Kentucky coach John Calipari, his coach on the Dominican team. As a freshman at St. Joseph, Towns averaged 11, points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots per game while making 63 3-pointers as St. Joseph finished 29-2. St. Joseph captured its first NJSIAA Non-Public A title and finished No. 3 in The Star-Ledger Top 20.”

If he coached him already, shouldn’t that be like illegal by NCAA standards or something? It just seems like he had a competitive edge.

One of the advantages of coaching a national team that’s not very good…another example of cal being more sly and witty than the other coaches. Boss
