Magic Johnson Offers LeBron James $1M to Participate in Dunk Contest

LeBron James has repeatedly said that he will not participate in the Dunk Contest. But his recent string of dunks in pre-game warmups has Magic Johnson offering a large amount of money to make it happen. From ESPN: “LeBron James never has taken part in the NBA’s dunk contest. Now he might have a million reasons to try it. Magic Johnson on Friday said he wants to see James take part in the annual contest so badly that he offered to give $1 million to James — or anyone who can beat him. ‘Please, LeBron, get in the dunk contest. I’m going to put up a million dollars,’ Johnson said on ESPN’s Kia NBA Countdown. ‘A million dollars from Magic to LeBron. Please get in the dunk contest. I go every year. I want to see you out there. A million to the winner.’ The NBA currently pays $100,000 to the winner and $50,000 to the runner-up. James always has declined to take part in the annual contest, but he has been throwing down trophy-worthy dunks lately in pregame warm-ups. Jalen Rose called for more elite players to take part, as well. ‘LeBron James, Blake Griffin both have to be in it,’ Rose said on the show, and Johnson agreed. ‘All-Star-caliber players helping build the league during All-Star weekend.’ Griffin won the contest in 2011.”

Lebron and Magic speak the same language; $$$$

  • spit hot fiyah

    it’s a pretty universal language

  • RKJ92

He still won’t do it that’s chump change for LeBron.. wish he would though :(

  • i_ball

I think if he offered the money to LeBrons charity that would do the trick

  • http://www.facebook.com/shooting.guard.319 Shooting Guard

yo earvin, for that amount i’d give you a lifetime supply of dunks

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

we both know you can’t dunk

  • trent

Because, you know, at the end of Lebron’s career when all is said and done, we’ll remember that he didn’t do the dunk contest. I know that’s what I’ll be holding against him.

  • Brandon

Are you serious its not that serious Lebron just has power gerald green james white tross have finesse.

  • The Philosopher

The greatest player of all time is offering The King a million dollars to dunk.

Even Magic Johnson has the need, seemingly, to be a part of The King’s crew of men. This is what it is, folks.

As we witness men of honor, prestige, AND status… clamor to kneel and kiss the ring of The King. As peasants, commoners, AND the elite court The King. To woo him. To shower him with praise and adulation.

    And jewels.

Other kings offer their booty from conquer to The King. Just out of respect.

He commands the respect of the masses.

    To further illustrate;

When Carmelo Anthony leaves town, the masses celebrate. And they drink strong drink.

When The King leaves town, peasants rip their garments, baring their chest with disgust AND anguish. Expressing their feelings of meloncholy, as they burn down the town, tipping over cars and carriages.

Money is not the only reason that players like Lebron and Griffin will not compete the dunk contest. They also don’t want to get hurt.

  • shockexchange

Why didn’t Magic enter the dunk contest since it was so important?

  • 23

    James white choked

  • http://twitter.com/BEdotwater Orlando Coolridge

I know, with Magic being the high flyer he was right?

    …..

  • http://twitter.com/BEdotwater Orlando Coolridge

so why dont they worry about getting hurt doing these dunks in pregame warmups?

  • fruizm

    Not everyone speak it well!

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

it’s the only reason, except this other reason.

  • Lloyd

…I hope none of the Kings are giving Lebron their booty to conquer.

  • BBaller

Lebron would pay $1 million not to participate so he would avoid the possibility of losing and the scrutiny that goes along with it.Anyways would that underleg dunk or something similar he did in the pregame be so special or dunk champ worthy if it was done by someone else. Do we really just want to give Lebron the trophy which would happen due to bias from fans.Offer Lebron and Kobe a million each for a 1 v 1, that’s the new event i want to see at ASW.

  • shockexchange

LeBron is an “in game” dunker, not a trick dunker. Secondly, LeBron has nothing to gain by entering the dunk contest. In a pick up game a few years ago, Jordan Crawford beat his man and LeBron rolled over late to help out. After Jordan dunked, every website on the planet blew it out of proportion … pining for website hits. People pining for King James to enter the dunk contest are only doing it out of self-interest. They’re thirsting for website hits.
Just so you know, LeBron and the Shock Exchange have decided that strategically he would be better served spending that extra time studying “The LeBron Rules … Keys to Stopping LeBron James.”

  • jub_al

I concur… Lebron would look greedy if he took the $1mil to show up at the dunk contest, good excuse to NOT do it… but if it’s for any charity of his choice, he risks looking like an a$$ for not doing something as simple as dunking, to get a million dollars to people in need..

  • The Seed

Bron is scared. I would rather see AI, Derozan, Blake, Howard, Nate and Shannon. Bron is from a different era, where people are friends, you work out with your competition, you dance in games, do videos with shirts off, don’t get a consistent jumpshot until 1oth year in NBA. Bron is not what you think he is. Bron and his queen’s men, like shirts off, but really Bron don’t like challenges. Plain and simple. EXAMPLE, Lets go to the Heat and play with DWade and Bosh, so I can get a ring. Instead of staying with a team and trying it as the MAN. ONly player ever to be an MVP to do THAT. WOW, during Free Agency. That told me everything about his WILL.

  • crack

    can i just borrow $5?

  • The Philosopher

    Nice.

  • The Philosopher

He makes average players look like all stars.
And he’s made Dwyane Wade look like the best shooting guard in the League.

  • The Seed

Wade has not looked like the best shooting guard. If so, Lebron would not have gotten MVP last year and frontrunner this year. Cut it out, man. The queens men, are not all in line yet. Wade has made comments where he understands his history or legend has fallen. Thats when people talk about Bron and MJ to him, he says let Lebron get there, which he will not.

  • Comment_System

    he meant the sneakers

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

actually, for a good portion of the year so far people have been saying Wade is washed up and not the same. He’s only recently picked things up.

  • spit hot fiyah

sure just send me your paypal info with password included

  • Caboose

    That’s definitely not true…

  • Caboose

Dwyane Wade IS the best shooting guard in the league and has been for a good 4 or 5 years.

  • pposse

d wade makes d wade look like the best sg in the league. only a complete lebron stan can sit here and believe that lebron has elevated d wades game to another level, mind you this a former finals mvp you are talking about

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

Thats actually completely true, he started the season off rough (for Wade standards)…

  • The Philosopher

Without the help of The King, Wade would be the focal point of most every defense in the League, no?
But since he is not the focal point of every defense, he now has more freedom to pick his spots. Increase his efficiency. And attack defenses without gassing himself down the stretch of a long season.
    Because, of… THE KING.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

    Not if you worship Kobe.

  • pposse

or maybe because of D Wade and his own prowess makes the King looks like the King, no? That argument works both ways, but Wade established himself as a ball player well before Bron Bron came to Miami. This whole notion that the weight of the world was lifted off LBJs shoulder once he aligned himself with two future HOF’ers who by the way are HOF’ers regardless if he played with them or not. is slowly being forgotten or swept under the rug. To me, its a big deal, and should definately have impact on his legacy.

  • The Philosopher

It is arguable that some people are perhaps, “sweeping things under the rug”.
    Why?
Because, The King is that good.

  • pposse

Why? Because the media/fans/world needs a prominent sports hero for this new age. There was Babe Ruth, Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan and now Lebron James is getting the push. He fits the bill, he is good, but sometimes i wonder if he is THAT good.

he would never take the money. he’d give it to the boys & girls club

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    amen.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

kobes got mad game still tho.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

i think wade cruises it for the most part of the season. and he seems like he MOSTLY plays like DWADE in the playoffs

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

pressure him with the boys n girls club.

  • http://twitter.com/BEdotwater Orlando Coolridge

I totally agree about bron being a game dunker.

  • shockexchange

The dunks LeBron has been doing in warmups recently may have won the slam dunk contest in 1977, but he wouldn’t make it out of the first round today.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000166716900 Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

    Indeed my good sirs.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Of course he doesn’t be was one of the top seven and possibly top five players in the League without a doubt. But saying he has been better than Wade in recent years doesn’t align with what I have seen.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

wades up n down.. wade cruises it for the most part of the season. and he seems like he MOSTLY plays like DWADE in the playoffs

then again… im sure when you got bron on your team.. theres no need to stunt

  • http://twitter.com/BEdotwater Orlando Coolridge

I just don’t think he would be that creative in a contest, but he would throw down a few classics.
