Kevin Ware Scores 6 Points in First Game Since Injury

by Bill DiFilippo / @bflip33

Today in “why we love basketball”: Louisville guard Kevin Ware made his return to the hardwood last night for the first time since his gruesome leg injury in the Cardinals’ Elite Eight matchup against Duke.

The junior guard from the Bronx didn’t waste any time getting back into the swing of things, as he drilled the first shot that he attempted and earned a standing ovation from the crowd in the KFC Yum! Center.

Ware didn’t enter the game until the 13:49 mark of the second half, but he played 10 minutes in the team’s 90-61 beatdown of NAIA University of Pikeville, scoring 6 points and grabbing 4 rebounds.

From ESPN:

Ware was cleared Sunday to practice with full contact for the first time since the injury, but he wasn’t expecting to play Wednesday.

“It was great. I’ve never felt like that before,” he told ESPN.com after Louisville’s 90-61 exhibition victory. “I’ve been waiting for that moment.”

“Once I hit the first shot, it took away all of the jitters.”

It’s unknown whether or not Ware will play in Louisville’s season opener on Saturday against College of Charleston, but coach Rick Pitino has said that Ware will be on the bench and in uniform for the game.

Great to see him come back after that horrific injury. Go Cards! Rise and Repeat!

When the injury happened some family and I were gathered for a party and the game was on, a few of them wanted to rewind and watch the injury again. I grabbed the control and said no, told them to youtube it if they want to see a 19 year old kids career ending injury (those were my thoughts in the moment). Really happy to see that he’s back on the court, and you can bet I’m about to email them all the video of him hitting that first 3 pointer!

Great to see but I’ll bet he thinks twice before ever landing on one foot again.

Even just thinking of this injury, the team’s reaction and quite frankly just how ghastly it looked, gives me the jitters to this day… Great news and very proud of Kevin

We’ll see they have mad talent I can’t even hate but that’s why they play the games! Should be an exciting year of NCAA bball.

  • KipSmithers

Oh, it’ll be fun. You used to or still live in Louisville?

I’m from California but my dad is from Louisville so a lot of my family is there so I just benefited from the tradition of Louisville Cards fans lol plus I had the opportunity to attend a bball camp it was one of the best experiences in my life. Coach Pitino has a lot of knowledge on bball and life.
