Former Rutgers Forward Derrick Randall Suing School Over Mike Rice Scandal

by Bill DiFilippo / @bflip33

Former Rutgers big man and current Pitt forward Derrick Randall is suing Rutgers for physical and verbal abuse he endured while playing under former Scarlet Knights head coach Mike Rice.

Randall, a junior, is suing several people, including Rice, former Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti and school president Robert Barchi. Rice and Pernetti were fired in the wake of the scandal, while Barchi is the school’s current president.

From CourthouseNewsService:

Assistant coach James Martelli resigned on April 3. He is a defendant.

Rutgers athletics director Timothy Pernetti resigned on April 4. He is a defendant.

Also sued are Rutgers CFO Janine Purcaro, and its Chairman of the Board Mark Hershhorn.

Randall left Rutgers after the scandal. He says the abuse caused him to lose “all confidence in himself and in his athletic abilities, which impacted his ability to perform both on and off the court.”

Randall claims Rice assaulted and battered him and that the other defendants “knew of this abusive conduct, yet stood by and allowed it to continue.”

In the wake of the scandal, Randall transferred to Pitt, where the NCAA granted him immediate eligibility. He is averaging 3.1 points and 4.8 rebounds in 13.6 minutes per game for the Panthers.

Good for him. Now the next school will think twice before hiring Rice.

I wrote this to nbk. You are an author, an academic, IN seriousness please read this message:

“You do realize that what I am saying is not insane. How many books have entered the human domain with the Title “WORD OF THE UNCREATED CREATOR”… How can you just DISMISS the claims without examining the evidence? I am surprised that most human beings are searching for Alien life but yet A non human entity has communicated with the human world and yet no one cares to examine if it is True or not.”

BTW interest/usury based banking is the most oppressive economic system known to mankind. Look at how Islamic investment companies faired during economic crisis.

  • speedy

How investment companies faired during economic has nothing to do with islam, but with common sense. There were enough companies, that had no problems during the economic crisis in europe, to prove that fact.
So understand it is not about the ‘uncreated creator’ , but people acting responsibly.

you sir, are truly a moron

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Bro, I agree with you completely. Diversify diversify diversify.

Let me ask though how does your comment have anything to do with the veracity of the message of the Holy Qur’an.

The Uncreated Creator is in control of everything. People’s action impact reality but nothing happens without the permission of the Uncreated Creator.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Ad Hominems do not take from the veracity of the message.

  • ratguts

a message that is garbled and has absolutely nothing to do with anything on this site.

He should be awarded no money for not standing up for himself. Thats the problem with today’s society the law, teachers, your parents are not always going to be there to stand up for you. Do it for yourself. I have played on a few teams with coaches like Rice and I let them know I don’t mind being corrected or scolded but ain’t gone be no belittling or physical contact. I was not raised to be a punching bag and i don’t raise my kid to be one either.

Can the Slam mods just ban this guy? He adds absolutely NOTHING to any of the conversations which occur here.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

That’s not true. I may speak about other subjects. But check my basketball comments and you’ll see I know slam. Were you on board when scoop was writing. Were you on board when lebron was rocking the gray addidas suite and kobe shuttle shoes with the mini afro. Were you on board when the Clippers background dropped. Were you on board when they started dropping kicks issues?

When were you on board with Slam?

Then please talk basketball and do not always tell us about your religion.
    That’s all I want.

  • Dfrance

I agree with the sentiment of your post, but you also have to take these kids total situation into consideration. Having the specter of possibly losing your college scholarship hanging over your head may make you hesitant to speak up. Especially when a lot of these guys come from the inner city. It’s easy to be on the outside looking in and criticize the players for not standing up for themselves, but none of us were in their shoes.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Only basketball. You are a human. My desire isn’t to convert you to a religion. I want you to distant yourself from entertainment a critically scrutinize books claiming to be the Word of the Creator of Everything

  • speedy

So then… why should I distance myself from entertainment?
I think thats what basketball and especially the NBA is all about?

I understand your position but its not cool to compromise your principles or self respect for any reason. This kid could have easily went else where to play as a college level ball player if he didn’t like his rutgers, they do it all the time. Like I stated before I played for coaches just like rice and when they know where you stand they don’t try you. He had other options kids switch schools all the time for many reasons.
