John Calipari: Kentucky is ‘Not a Good Basketball Team’ Right Now

by Bill DiFilippo / @bflip33

John Calipari had some choice words about his 19th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats after the team lost to North Carolina on Saturday and fell to 8-3 on the season.

Despite starting the year as the preseason No. 1 team in America, Kentucky has lost to Michigan State, Baylor and UNC this season, making the Wildcats one of two teams in the AP Top 25 with three losses this year.

Emotions boiled over in Calipari’s postgame press conference after his team’s loss to the Tar Heels, when the often outspoken coach ripped into the quality of his team.

From Yahoo Sports:

“What we are right now is we’re not a good basketball team and we’re not a good team because our emotion is all based on our individual play, instead of our team play like, ‘We just got a great stop. Let’s all five chest each other and let’s go nuts,’” Calipari said. “We’re not close to that right now. Our stuff is all based on, ‘Did I miss a free throw? Did I get beat on the dribble? Did I miss a shot?’ I mean, it’s just we got to get through this.”

Calipari was asked how he goes about changing the selfish mentality to get his collection of former star recruits to do for others what they want done for them on the court.

“You want to keep losing? Keep acting that way,” he said. “We’re not a good team and players aren’t looking real good.”

The Wildcats will try to get back on track on Saturday when they host Belmont.

what do you expect…… when you get 6 or 7 top 30 players in the nation in high school…and they used to being the star and receiving INDIVIDUAL awards….they will play for themselves obviously

  • Junior Taylor

Even though I’m a fan of JRandle, from what I have seen so far I think that James Young is going to be the better pro. His game translates slightly better to the Pros than Randles given that he is a true 2-guard whereas Randle is a bit of a tweener.

I disagree. The tweeners label in randles case favor his potential. He could play legit sf or pf in the league transitioning to small ball. Unlike other tweeners randle has a post game legit handle and shot.

  • Duh

That’s what they said about Derrick Williams.

hey, we hit a few FT’s were undefeated. And also the race is not for the swift. UK will pull it together come Feb.

  • Mack

Randle’s not a tweener to me. He looks like an NBA PF and undersized center with handles. If I was his coach he would rarely if ever play the 3. His rebounding and inside game are too strong to stick him on the wing

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

his handles are derrick coleman/lamar odom. I could see him playing sf in the league his jumper is legit.

That’s why I don’t think he’s a tweener. He can legit play both positions

  • Nathan Shane Long

Once again putting together a team of AAU ALL-STARS is failing again at the PLANTATION in Kentucky

I don’t think calapari is racist. However, I will say enslaving child labor is a protocol for the oppressors.

My Uncle Harrison got a nearly new
blue Buick Regal GS by work using a laptop. recommended you read Jam20.ℂom

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

It I was cal I’d run a half court set and use Dakari and Caulstein randle at 3 Aaron and Andrew harrison

failing, how? 10 games in the season impossible to have failed.
