LeBron Wants the Celtics in the ECF

by Marcel Mutoni

It took seven grueling games, but they managed to knock his team out of the postseason last year, on their way to a championship.

And now, LeBron James (try as he might to mask it) wants another shot at the Boston Celtics.

From the Plain Dealer:

LeBron James may have mastered the art of the no-look pass, but his use of deception on his preference for Eastern Conference Finals opponent isn’t as polished…the more he talked, the more it became obvious that if James and the rest of the Cavs had their choice, they would choose a rematch with the defending champion Celtics and not the Orlando Magic.

He said he’d seen every one of the Magic’s playoff games and talked about how difficult they are to defend with Dwight Howard and his strong shooters. But there was an edge when James discussed the Celtics.

Last year’s seven-game series with the Celtics was nothing if not a rivalry starter. James has said the Game 7 defeat in Boston, when he scored 45 points and Celtics’ star Paul Pierce scored 41, was one of the hardest of his career. Has he wanted another postseason shot at Pierce and Boston since? “I’m a competitor, I thrive on going against the best,” James said. “I love playing against the best you make your answer out of that.”

The Celtics are one win away from making the dream matchup a reality.

King James wants his vengeance, and there seems to be no reason to believe he won’t get it.

The Celts won’t win more than a game if they get there. The Magic could possibly take 2.

  • German Reignman Posted: May.14 at 10:03 am
LeBron James wants … the ECF to finally start, hes tired of waiting ….

  • Neil Posted: May.14 at 10:05 am
first! lebron will be defeated in the next round

  • jumpman3224 Posted: May.14 at 10:06 am
As an Ohioan everyone I know is on the Cavs bandwagon. I’ve since since round one that Orlando would give CLE a tougher matchup than Boston, but the Magic probably can’t get past the Celtics. Let me be the first to officially predict KG suits up in the ECF

  • Hisham Posted: May.14 at 10:06 am
I’ve always wondered: if your nickname is German Reignman, is your real name Shawn Kempf?

  • brian scalabrine Posted: May.14 at 10:16 am
    ill hold him to 25

  • brian scalabrine Posted: May.14 at 10:18 am
eboys a tool, u know nothing ur ignorant

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 10:19 am
    LeBron will destroy the Celtics…

  • brian scalabrine Posted: May.14 at 10:22 am
albert look at ur name ur ignorant

  • Cheryl Posted: May.14 at 10:23 am
Don’t be surprised in Bron and the Bronettes sweep their way to a chip.

  • Cheryl Posted: May.14 at 10:23 am
16 and 0, has it ever been done?

  • Jukai Posted: May.14 at 10:23 am
    Lebroom will have another sweep

  • Abdi Posted: May.14 at 10:24 am
If the celtics win they have a chance of beating the cavs, magic don’t. Magic squad will die in 5 probably.

  • thebigticket05 Posted: May.14 at 10:25 am
Lebron needs a wake up call, if I was him I’d rather play the Magic, because the Celtics are going to stomp the Cavs in 6.

  • The Starks Knight Posted: May.14 at 10:25 am
I thought Brian Scalabrine graduated from University. Surely he can elaborate on his statement.

  • cdef28 Posted: May.14 at 10:28 am
Yeah ok says the person with the name thebigticket05. KG isn’t even playing.

  • brian scalabrine Posted: May.14 at 10:30 am
hey starks dont come at me unless u know the electron configuration of krypton

  • Mendel Posted: May.14 at 10:31 am
With on KG in the line up I would want them to.

  • Eboy Posted: May.14 at 10:32 am
    This sh*t is wicked stupid!

  • Bear Posted: May.14 at 10:33 am
I hope Lebron gets beat again –> Boston and Denver in the finals

  • Jer Boi Posted: May.14 at 10:37 am
he only wants the celtics cuz every1 wants them. no KG, no powe, perkins fouls out in like 10 seconds. he[’ll easily drive and score whenever he wants. i still dont understand how the magic can play so bad against the celtics, especially howard. guess its svg.

  • The Starks Knight Posted: May.14 at 10:38 am
Sadly I’m just an angry janitor at MIT who solves complicated math problems when all the poindexters go home. Thuggets over Cavs in 5?

  • German Reignman Posted: May.14 at 10:40 am
    @ Hisham:
No, its Shawn Kampf …. @ Cheryl:
I think not, everybody was talking about the Lakers being the first to reach that goal but the they lost Game 1 of the Finals to A.I.s 6ers … this 15-1 postseason streak was the best ever

  • Will Lee Posted: May.14 at 10:41 am
garnett is not even playing, he can say whatever

  • malanacream Posted: May.14 at 10:44 am
kg gotta come back and show The C’s are back!

  • MeloMan13 Posted: May.14 at 11:08 am
who wouldnt want a team without their best player? Orlando wanted the same thing. i still dont get why the Cavs and Magic feel that beating the C’s minus Kg will redeem what happened last year

  • BostonBaller Posted: May.14 at 11:16 am
I also think my Celtics would be better suited to face the Cavs b/c atleast we have heart. James wants us for 2 reasons 1: He IS a competitor and wants revenge 2: He knows he wouldn’t have to go against Howard who MIGHT get the benefit of the doubt once in a while when he blocks his shot. He knows the C’s are very thin and may be running on pure heart and instinct and what better way to elevate yourself than to beat the defending champs. Two tears from now if the cavs were to beat the C’s and win it all no one will remember that they beat a weakened defending champs. No EXCUSES let’s play the games!!

  • BostonBaller Posted: May.14 at 11:19 am
I really really hope that KG does NOT come back this year b/c he would not be ready to play and could jeapordize the remainder of his career by doing so. (ex: Kevin McHale and his decision to play on his injured foot during a playoff run)

  • thesubwayconnection Posted: May.14 at 11:26 am
Really? The Cavs handed Boston a 30 point L late in the season, and all of the other matchups were close. I doubt Boston wins more than one in a series with the Cavs - even with KG.

  • Dutch Rich Posted: May.14 at 11:29 am
    The teams that will not win a chip this year;
    BOSTON
    ORLANDO
    HOUSTON

  • mj23 Posted: May.14 at 11:30 am
C’s without Garnett have no shot against the Cavs. They won’t do any better than the Hawks, especially if this current series goes to 7 games. They were already lookin worn down by DRose and the Bulls. I think the Bulls would’ve had a better shot against the Cavs. Bulls should be one of the top 5 teams in the east next year.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 11:30 am
How is my name ignorant Brian Scal? You have chosen the moniker of a overweight Ginger that is no better than Matt Bonner…big man who shoots threes and fouls dudes cause he is to slow to play actual defense…LeBron will destroy the Celtics…

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.14 at 11:35 am
    1) The Shawn Kempf/Kampf joke was OUTSTANDING. Bravo. 2) I don’t care if it takes the Celtics eight overtimes in Game Seven to oust the Magic, I refuse to write them off in the ECF. They’re the team that won’t die, no matter how badly you want them to.

  • mj23 Posted: May.14 at 11:35 am
Brian Scal / Matt Bonner are token white players. They get paid to sit their fat butts on the bench, and to keep the white fans happy.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 11:38 am
True Russ, I want them to die very badly and they dont seem to care…insensitive of them I know.

  • The Starks Knight Posted: May.14 at 11:40 am
Even though I’m half white I can assure you that the ‘blanc’ half of me is not happy with Matt Bonner or Brian Scalabrine. Co-sign on the Kampf kudos.

  • babygab Posted: May.14 at 11:51 am
Celtics the best ? I’m not sure about that but hey ! if they beat the magics then it would probably mean they’re the better team. I don’t know why but I feel exactly like jumpman3224, that at some point KG’s gonna put his jersey on… I just can’t get rid of the feeling…

  • George from Boston Posted: May.14 at 11:52 am
Labron has better be careful of what he wihes for…. He may just get it.
It may go to another game 7, But history will repeat! LaBron and the Cavs are going down in defeat! Not this year again, Labron. Once again your team will be the “bride’s maid” and not the “bride”.
    See ya!!!

  • Seth Posted: May.14 at 11:53 am
As a Bostonian it pains me to admit LeBron will get his wish and then some - Cleveland looks too strong and Boston will be lucky to walk away with one win. It’s gonna be difficult without Garnett.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.14 at 11:58 am
All of you who are writing off Boston—have you watched any of their playoff games this year? Did you watch any of them last year? They might lose, but there is no WAY they get swept. Not happening.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.14 at 12:08 pm
Also, just an FYI, the ‘09 Cavs? Not the ‘01 Lakers or ‘96 Bulls or ‘86 Celtics or ‘72 Lakers. I mean, ooh, they swept the Pistons and the Hawks.

  • Jess Posted: May.14 at 12:10 pm
magic, celtics, doesnt matter..the cavs are gonna hand it to whoever they play..

  • Magestic12 Posted: May.14 at 12:12 pm
(N.B. mispelling of name on purpose … 10 kudo points to anyone who can answer why!) The Celtics are one of the most pitifull and sorry group of athletes to grace the widescreen in many many years. They whine like lost babies whenever a questionable call goes against them, and they celebrate as if they single handedly won WWIII when they score a meaningless bucket. Prediction L-Train and CO. sweep the pitifull, mindless, heartless, brainless, witless, and grotesquely dis-co-ordinated C’s in the ECF To the first prognastocator: *unzip* … eat this!

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:20 pm
Russ, this is very true that the Cavs aren’t truly dominant like those teams…FYI though, These Celtics aren’t the 2008 Celtics, last year they had KG and it took seven to knock off LeBron…so although I don’t expect a sweep, I do expect dominance. Similar to Nuggs and Mavs

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:21 pm
And the Hawks were disappointing, no reason they needed to be swept except they just gave up.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:25 pm
And Mike Bibby is old…hes my boy…but he is old.

  • jumpman3224 Posted: May.14 at 12:27 pm
Cosign Russ! The Cavs haven’t even played a team that would have made the playoffs in the West yet (ie two cake rounds). Of course you can only play the games that you have in front of you, but to think they will sweep Boston because of their play in rounds one and two…c’mon.

  • Cizzo Posted: May.14 at 12:30 pm
I hope LB live up to all the hype, the MVP, winning home court thruout the P.Offs, what am I talking about he has surpassed the hype now he is at a level of legendary satus. I still don’t think the Cavs can beat the Lakers in a series!!!

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:30 pm
Also, the Celts are where they are cause of some LUCKY shots…Glen Davis isn’t going to hit those every time…though he is playing really well these playoffs (he is probably in total fear of KG’s wrath if he does not play well).

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:32 pm
I wish Shaq HAD been traded to the cavs at the deadline…it would crazy entertaining right now.

  • jumpman3224 Posted: May.14 at 12:35 pm
Luck is the residue of design Albert. Obviously if they hadn’t put themselves in position to win the game, by outworking the Magic late, on one shot then it wouldn’t have mattered. I’m a Lakers fan and I have to say that the Celts are mentally tough.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:40 pm
I agree that the Celts are mentally tough and that they work hard to be in positions where “Luck” can win the game, it doesn’t mean that their toughness and hustle will luck them into winning more than one or two against the Cavs. I like the idea of “luck being the residue of Design” though…nice prose. Also, the Magic are mentally soft…the Cavs are not. WHen both teams are “tough” you have to put more on the floor than just that…the Cavs have more of everything else…

  • jumpman3224 Posted: May.14 at 12:44 pm
Agree on all points, especially the Magic being soft and the Celts only winning two games in the ECF. That’s more credit than most people are giving them

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:45 pm
The Magic need to get rid of SVG…even if they pull this series win out of their a$$ somehow…Dwight needs to develop SOME SORT OF OFFENSE over the summer and they need a legit 2 who can get inside to score…then the Magic will be scary…Avery Johnson for coach of Magic?

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:46 pm
I say this only cause I really think the Magic are more talented…no reason the Celts should be in a position to advance based on talent…they are just the “tougher” team mentally. And Doc is far superior to SVG. Maybe the Magic need to get Pat Riley as their coach…worked for the Heat.

  • ABIMATOR Posted: May.14 at 12:46 pm
Lebroom, be careful 4 what u dream of cuz u may get it and my C’s(SuppaWarriors) are gonna kick ur lil’ crab as**

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:50 pm
What is a SuppaWarrior…must be Big Baby’s nick-name at the dinner table.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 12:50 pm
I like the nick-name LeBroom cause it works regardless of which side of the sweep you are on.

  • riggs Posted: May.14 at 12:56 pm
of course bron would want a depleted celtics team so he can cruise his way through. why are we still stuck that this years playoff team is equal to last years? theyre like at 50% right now and STILL might make it to the ECF, that says something.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 1:02 pm
Yes, it says the East still sucks generally unless you are the Cavs or Celtics (the Bulls played with a lot of heart but would have been demolished by a healthy Celts)

  • MeloMan13 Posted: May.14 at 1:52 pm
If Shaq got traded to the Cavs then Lebron would be getting the same critisism Kobe has gotten: can’t win without Shaq. im pretty sure bron does not want that

  • Anton Posted: May.14 at 1:54 pm
I just want to see the look on KG’s face when they lose.
Go Celtics tonight! I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

  • Anton Posted: May.14 at 1:58 pm
Nah, smart fans would know. Kobe has 100% Shaq, Wade has 60% Shaq, LeBron would have 40% Shaq.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 2:16 pm
And the pre-game routine would be amazing…

  • IUPUI Posted: May.14 at 2:38 pm
I feel you but you still gonna be one of the greatest after yall lose. I know you don’t believe it but this is the Celtics year to repeat. Just remember IUPUI.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: May.14 at 2:59 pm
Are you talking about George Hill?

  • D12FSU Posted: May.14 at 3:19 pm
its because the Maguc are 2-1 against the cavs this year…so Lebron knows they would lose in a best of 7

  • justin Posted: May.14 at 3:29 pm
he only wants them because there a very depleted team and orlando would give them a very good match because they cant stop howard.

  • kwame Posted: May.14 at 3:35 pm
i feel that the mahic would be muuuuuuch harder to beat than the celts for the cavs

  • xt04 Posted: May.14 at 4:14 pm
I don’t see why the Magic would be harder to beat for the Cavs, considering the Magic cant close out the “depleted” Celts. Regular season record means jack in the playoffs. The fact is Cleveland is motivated, focused, and playing defense at a championship level. Say what you will about the quality of opponents, but they are doing what they SHOULD do. Beating them senseless. The Cavs have always been a much better playoff team than the regular season. Why people thought it would be different this year, I dont know. The Magic havent shown the ability to close out an eilte team, and the Celtics…well I don’t know what to say for the Celtics. They are harder to kill than Dracula. I will say that if the Bron and the boys have the C’s down by 15 in the 4th, you best believe they are going to finish the job. Let’s not act like the Magic have proven ANYTHING in this playoffs. Im not saying the Cavs are guaranteed anything. Im saying this idea that the Cavs are afraid of anyone in these playoffs, much less the Orlando Panic is ridiculous.

  • Evan Posted: May.14 at 4:42 pm
LeBron has a preference, not a fear. Magic or Celtics, the Cavs are going to show up and play their game.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: May.14 at 5:49 pm
“The Celts are harder to kill than dracula”…xt04, hilarious.

  • Jack Posted: May.14 at 7:18 pm
The Magic match up better against the Cavs and every other possible team they might have to play in the Finals. The Celts can’t beat LA or Denver in a 7-game series, the Magic have a better chance with them or Cleveland.

  • twahc Posted: May.14 at 9:47 pm
celtics are tired playing almost 7 games a serie. and cavs are tired of waiting. so it’s quite obvious who’s got the energy to win the cavs-celtics series if (right now celtics are behind magic in game 6…) celtics finish the magic. i cheer for the celtics, but they are struggling pretty much after KG is injured. let pierce and allen prove me wrong, please.

  • wilz Posted: May.15 at 2:10 am
i hope he doesnt get the celtics. who we kidding…they arent the same celtics at all, it wont be a rematch

  • [...] LeBron Wants The Celtics In Next Round Suffering a bitter game seven loss in last year’s playoffs to the Celtics, LeBron clearly wants a rematch to show them who is truly No. 1. We’ll see if he gets his wish. Read the article here [...]

Everyone loves Cleveland this year, because they got 66 wins and the conference title and are, ahem, “unstoppable”. Last year it was Kobe and LA. We’ll see. We’ll see.
