The Return of Jameer Nelson?

by Marcel Mutoni

He was supposed to be dunzo for the season, but as the Orlando Magic kept getting further and further in the postseason, the better his surgically repaired shoulder apparently started feeling. And now, Jameer Nelson is contemplating suiting up in the NBA Finals.

When this chatter began a couple of weeks ago, the Magic completely dismissed it, but now, they’re willing to think about it a bit more.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

If he’s judged healthy enough to return within the next few days, Orlando Magic all-star point guard Jameer Nelson will play against the team he was instrumental in beating twice this season — the Los Angeles Lakers — in the NBA Finals.

[GM Otis Smith] said Nelson had an MRI as recently as last week and has participated in contact drills. “It’s up in the air. We’ll see how Jameer looks the next few days,” Smith said. “There’s a few more things we have to get comfortable with. We’re looking at the pros and cons. Doctors will have to talk to doctors. If we’re at a place where Jameer can help us accomplish our goals, then maybe he can play and give us some more punch. There’s a litany of tests he’ll have to pass. His health is the main thing. We’re not going to mortgage his future.”

Nelson also will have input in the final decision. “Would I like to play? Of course. I’m a competitor,” Nelson said. “But I don’t want to do anything that would jeopardize me long-term.”

It wouldn’t exactly be Willis Reed stepping onto the Garden Floor in the ‘70 Finals, but Jameer’s return could spark the Magic in a significant way. To expect much of a contribution from him after such a long layoff, though, is perhaps unrealistic.

i really hope he comes back. i love this guy. and i cant stand rafe jackin up tres all game

  • Mansonovic Posted: Jun.1 at 10:08 am
Cue the Lakers coaxing Robert Horry out of retirement to pop him in the shoulder a few times.

  • riggs Posted: Jun.1 at 10:12 am
co-sign mitch, sometimes skip can be a complete idiot on offense.

  • Moose Posted: Jun.1 at 10:28 am
    This won’t happen.

  • Prison Mike Posted: Jun.1 at 10:29 am
Please let this be the down fll of the Magic, that they end up regretting all summer.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.1 at 10:33 am
I’m rooting for the Lakers UNLESS Jameer comes back. I love that guy, and if Nelson comes back off the bench, I’ll root for the dudes that took down my (bandwagon) beloved team

  • Coconut Posted: Jun.1 at 10:40 am
Does he get a ring if they win a championship but he hasn’t played a single playoff game? Anyhow even if he does get a ring I think getting that ring wouldn’t feel the same for him without playing at least a few minutes per game in the finals…

  • nate the great Posted: Jun.1 at 10:41 am
ehh. i thinkg anthony carter should start.

  • Eboy Posted: Jun.1 at 10:42 am
So that would make 4 teams you would have rooted for this season, Jukai? That’s pretty efficient.

  • niQ Posted: Jun.1 at 10:59 am
this could get interesting. but, at the same time, i don’t think he should jeopardize his future. if he does play, maybe limit him to 10-15 minutes.

  • Ben Posted: Jun.1 at 11:03 am
I hope for the Magic its not gonna be like Willis Reed because 2 field goal is not gonna be enough to beat LA

  • Slick Nick Da Ruler Posted: Jun.1 at 11:03 am
    Efficient and smart.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.1 at 11:07 am
Eboy: Yeah, man, it’s crazy to watch two teams play against each other and root for one team to win, isn’t it? I mean, what is the world of sports coming to.

  • Z Posted: Jun.1 at 11:35 am
jameer taking aj’s minute is a HUGE upgrade. even if he’s not at full speed.

  • LB Posted: Jun.1 at 11:37 am
Jameer Nelson should sit this out, no question about it. He’ll probably hurt his team more than help it since he’ll be playing his way back into shape while everyone else is locked in from having played playoff basketball. And it’s not lke the Magic are hurting at the point. Skip is a pretty decent starting point, while Anthony Johnson has his moments too (like the 40 point game he had for Indy and the Slamadmonth he crammed on Theo Ratliff lol). If anything, I bet these rumors are just smokescreens the Magic are sending to confuse the Lakers in their preparation.

  • CHE Posted: Jun.1 at 11:38 am
He will not come back. It’s too risky and even if he did come back his playing time wouldn’t be much considering he hasn’t played in forever.

  • Marcnificent Posted: Jun.1 at 11:50 am
Jameer who?? Will people please start giving Skip some respect…You know the same Skip everybody thought was garbage and would never be a starting point guard on a championship contending team. You know the kinda true point guard that doesnt need to score a bunch of points on this loaded team, but still gets flack cause hes so called not “better” than Jameer even though they are two different kinds of point guards.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jun.1 at 11:53 am
I’d like to see it happen. Even if it’s only for 15-20 mpg, I would really like to see it.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.1 at 12:00 pm
You know, a common theme I see from the SLAM commentators is that they CONTINUALLY complain people get no credit when they, in fact, do get plenty of credit. Skip gets PLENTY of respect, people have recognized him as a dude who has really helped the Magic with Jameer’s loss. No one excepts or WANTS Nelson to take Skip’s 30 minutes a game. They want Nelson to take Anthony JOhnson’s 15.

Anyhow even if he does get a ring I think getting that ring wouldn’t feel the same for him without playing at least a few minutes per game in the finals… I think thats why he wants to make a return cause its been an exciting postseason. Not sure how to feel besides aprehensive

  • riggs Posted: Jun.1 at 12:17 pm
he was a key part on getting them to the postseason and for having many wins, its only deserving he should get a ring if he does or doesnt play IMO at least….

  • JoeMaMa Posted: Jun.1 at 12:17 pm
I just want Adam Morrison to get a ring. He would then finally cry the tears of joy we’ve breathlessly been waiting for.

  • D12FSU Posted: Jun.1 at 12:22 pm
JJ Redick is gonna get a ring before Morrison

  • BETCATS Posted: Jun.1 at 12:29 pm
JoeMaMa, the only tears adam will cry are from not playing a minute in the NBA finals.

  • mlaw Posted: Jun.1 at 12:44 pm
am i the only one disturbed that either JJ Redick or Adam Morrison are gonna get a ring in lieu of countless Hall of Famers that tried to latch on to a team in the twilight of their careers (e.g. Karl Malone)

  • wayno Posted: Jun.1 at 12:44 pm
I think this would ba a bad idea…this team is rolling right now and that might screw things up. Not that Jameer isn’t good, it’s just that it might require some time to re-adjust to him and they don’t have time to waste on that. Also, am I the only one that was shocked that Skip thoroughly outplayed Mo Williams? Not that Mo is spectacular or anything, but I thought he’d own that matchup.

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.1 at 12:58 pm
This is the Adam Morrison vs. JJ Redick finals we have been waiting for since college!

  • slamfan4life Posted: Jun.1 at 1:18 pm
I think he’ll mess with the chemistry the magic have built, either way im still rooting for the Lakers (LA in 4)

  • breeze Posted: Jun.1 at 1:39 pm
rafer …is more pass first and will help other teamates …but jameer gives them a more of a scoring point of view that will actually give them enough points to keep up with la…hmm lakers in 6

  • Zee!! Posted: Jun.1 at 1:53 pm
    The mind games have begun….

  • Chris Posted: Jun.1 at 2:40 pm
I still can’t believe Adam Morrison and JJ Redick are going to be “competing” for a Championship.

  • Anton Posted: Jun.1 at 2:43 pm
    He looks like a frog.

  • JoeMaMa Posted: Jun.1 at 3:16 pm
I’d love to see Morrison and Redick go after a loose ball, run into each other at center court and explode into confetti. So we could just put those messes to bed once and for all.

  • messofelegance Posted: Jun.1 at 4:10 pm
    who? Lakers in 6.

  • rob stewart Posted: Jun.1 at 4:15 pm
15 minutes of a spark would be nice. He may never see another Finals experience in his career. I’d go for it.

  • Stan Posted: Jun.1 at 4:43 pm
I didnt know Morrison is with the Lakers, isn’t he better than Walton and Vujacic? Brown should have more playing time.

  • KB24 Posted: Jun.1 at 5:32 pm
it doesnt matter if he comes back or not cuz the lakers are going to be the ‘09 champs.

  • foolio_iglesias Posted: Jun.1 at 7:13 pm
At this pint in the season,I don’t see it being of much benefit…

  • GOAT Posted: Jun.1 at 7:33 pm
HEY ED! If you’re out there reading this, put some jabs and comedy back in Noyz, like it used to be back in the day. This guy’s comment makes a perfect example. JoeMaMa Posted: Jun.1 at 3:16 pm

Sure. In the same way, Allen Iverson ‘competed’ for a run at the championship trophy this post season. I wonder if this would actually be the knock out punch that could put Orlando over the hump. Ball movement, miss matches and defense at every position is already very strong for this team. If Jameer comes back fresh and ready to play this could actually be an amazing turn of circumstances. Jameer WAS an allstar this year, way moreso than Mo Williams and he would handle the pressure/spot light with leadership and character. SUIT UP YOUNG MAN!

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jun.1 at 8:17 pm
If Morrison & Redick ran into each other they would turn into water like on the commercial b/c Redick has a wet jumper at times and Morrison cries all the time

  • The Promise Posted: Jun.1 at 8:37 pm
I’m not feeling this. He’s prolly too rusty to play at as high of a level as he did before he got hurt.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.1 at 10:31 pm
Co-sign Marcnificent. @ Jukai: Just read riggs dumb comments for what he means.

  • Don Posted: Jun.1 at 11:21 pm
a few years ago, teams drafted JJ REDICK and ADAM MORRISON hoping the two players would bring their respective teams to the NBA finals…what Do you know, a few years later, they’re both in the finals!!!! should i be happy?

  • Laumol Posted: Jun.2 at 5:21 am
Give J.J. and Adam some slack. Sure they’re not the reason why the Magic and Lakers have reached the Finals, but I’m sure they’re contributing to the succes. In trainingsessions, on the bench and J.J.’s case even in games. We all can imagine how tough it must be to be a member of a Kobe-team and to work besides great players and still make a positive contribution could be a job in itself. For more insight in the daily life of DNP-CD’s: read Paul Shirley’s excellent “Can I Keep My Jersey?”.

  • TWANA Posted: Jun.3 at 12:29 am
Jameer reminds me a little bit of amare stud he just dont when to quit. if he do come back he’ll worse then before then i laff cause then ill know my lakers will when.

  • T Williams Posted: Jun.3 at 12:44 am
Orlando is going to mess up there chemistry it’s hard for players to play with confidence when they are worried in the back of there heads “I’m coming out if I missed 2 shots” Jameer is a good point guard But his stats are similar to Rafers. they both had career highs during the season. Rafer does not get the respect becuase He dominated the street circuit, and they don’t believe you can do both. But He doesn’t even use that flair in NBA games, if he did the NBA would be his play ground! Jameer DNP

  • donlaker Posted: Jun.3 at 4:51 pm
why put pressure on jameer, a carter is a good player and can pass to dwight….
and rafer can skip to my lue

  • theanswer03 Posted: Jun.3 at 11:31 pm
its anthony JOHNSON people not anthony carter (the scrub in denver)

  • Dacre Posted: Jun.4 at 1:59 am
    beedle juice

  • Blaze Posted: Jun.11 at 2:12 pm
agree,or disagree. John Stockton is the best pg of all time. maybe not the winningest or most successful, but as for as the most pure point, and doing the duties expected of a point. He is first all time in assists and steals. I understand magic has the rings and glove is right there too. what do you think?
