Leon Powe Out For Playoffs

by Ryne Nelson

The Celtics’ luck can’t get much worse, can it? After dealing with the loss of team leader Kevin Garnett for the Playoffs, they lose their most efficient paint scorer as well.

Powe, who returned exactly one week ago from a sprained right knee, is expected to undergo surgery this week after an MRI revealed an ACL tear in his left knee.

According to an NBA source, Celtics forward Leon Powe is expected to have surgery on his injured left knee and will miss the remainder of the playoffs.

Powe had an MRI after injuring the knee in the second quarter of the Celtics’ 118-115 victory over the Bulls in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series Monday night. The injury was originally diagnosed as a sprain. It is uncertain whether further damage was found in the knee.

Coincidentally, the last time Boston played Chicago in the regular season, Powe sustained injury on his other knee. Not only is it a big blow to the Celtic frontcourt, it’s an awful thing to happen going into contract negotiation time. Players never seem to be the same after too many injuries at or below the knee. As if it’s any consolation, Brian Scalabrine is scheduled to return for Game 3. He better be ready, the Celtics really need him now.

I hate this for Leon, he’s been through so much already, but I know he’ll fight to get back to ASAP. This a bummer though.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Yeah Juks, splain yourself. I haven’t heaad one bad thing about Powe ever.

  • Diesel

I’m happy because this means the Bulls chances of winning got that much better. On the other hand, Powe seemed like the one player on the Celtics that isn’t a douche and he is a tough player. You don’t wish multiple major injuries on anyone…especially someone thats been through as much as he has to get where he is.

Perkins warned Powe that he won’t have another injury like that again.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

This really sucks. Even if you’re someone who hates the Celtics, you want your team to beat the Celtics at their best to win the title. Especially if you’re a Laker fan. Would you gloat over beating Ali in a street fight if he had one hand tied behind his back and a broken ankle? F*ck no.

  • niQ

oman. that sucks. i was expecting good things from powe! especially since they need him now that KG is down.

  • cdef28

This is the time where Powe regresses like he did at Cal and he will never play the same. Sad

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Jackie: Point noted. I dunno if you’re a Laker fan, but don’t you want to see if this season’s (improved?) Laker team can really beat the Celtics in a 7-game series? Or if they are last season’s paper tiger that the full-strength Celtics exposed them to be?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

You know…..I really for bad for Leon…..but why is everyone so stuck on the Celtics having been the team from the East that was going to be in the Finals? Are the Cavs not the favorite in the East regardless?

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Did i just read “where is Brian Scalabrine”. As in, “save us Brian”? Umm, him, really? At this rate, i’d rather see Micki Moore play 47.5 minutes a game.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Darksaber, the way these games have been, i dont think u want Scalabrine in for the last 30 secs…

  • Tavoris

the stars are really lining up for Lebron, aren’t they?

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

Brian Scalabrine saved New Jersey in that triple-overtime playoff game versus Detroit in 2004 that put them up 3-2. Maybe he can finally live up to the contract Danny Ainge signed him to.

But I doubt it. This is the kiss of death. Looking forward to Cavs-Lakers.

  • SWIFTboy

@Joel: Yes, to a certain degree. Although every year injuries have agreat impact on the final outcome. Just a part of the game. Do Celtics fans wish they could have found out if they could have beaten the Lakers last year with a healthy Andrew Bynum? Do Bulls fans wish they could have found out if the would have really gotten the 8th spot with a healthy Wizards team? Do Pacers fans wonder where they would be right now with a healthy Jonathon Bender?

  • http://allanzuss@yahoo.com Mendel

That sucks for Powe, he is a good dude. Celtics on the other hand are now officially toast.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Miki Moore = Epic Fail. It is safe to say that now. Boston should have waited and signed Drew Gooden, Joe Smith, or even someone like Antoine Walker. But instead they got a guy with a huge ego that doesnt do sh!t for them. Boston spits quick….

  • Dale Wittig

The niece of an old friend (she was the point guard on the women’s team at CAL) used to do his homework and write his papers for him when he was at Berkeley, but that’s pretty standard for college jocks (except Leon didn’t have the money to pay for the service.) The word was that people did things for Leon because he was a really good guy. I’ve heard that off the court he’s the sweetest guy imaginable and I’ve always admired his game, so I feel bad for Powe, but not for the Celtics. I think the Karma comment probably referred to the team; not to Leon, who has done much more than anyone could have expected of him.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

He’s seven feet tall. Yeah, we can play Perk at the 4, but he doesn’t have an offensive game. Mikki can’t match up to other power forwards physically, he’s good for his jumper. We have no muscle down low anymore, at least deep.

Did you ever have any? Leon is good, but i would describe him as using more skills than sheer force. He is a force, but he uses skills to be one, he doesnt use power. Maybe that is just me.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

and please excuse the “Did you ever have any?” what i meant was “did you ever have any after KG got injured?”

I got it, BET. Powe’s footwork is extraordinary. He takes charges like nobody’s business. He’s smart on offense. And, we need forces as well. We’re just out.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

i thought the time of death was when KG was gone, and the thing that you were dying of was a lack of PJ Brown. To any realistic person, you were just out a while ago. Dont be disappointed, it was going to happen anyway. Do what i did about a week ago and just start getting ready for next season.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I REALLY hope Powe is able to come back and do something in the league. Even if it means working as an assistant or whatever. And yeah, the Cavs weren’t about to lose to a KG-less Celtics team anyway. and people underestimated the Bulls, once KG was ruled out I felt like the Bulls had a legit shot at winning that series.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

@ Mendel: LOOOOL yea i feel u but i already do those things, except smoke weed (say no to drugs). i don’t neeeeed money but it would help. but i was kinda hoping if SLAM needed a canadian perspective for the website on playoff games or the draft or something like that

ok, keep thinking that. Say you guys were to meet up with Cleveland in the conference finals somehow. Cavs in 4…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

I know that. If we even GET to the EC Finals, I call it a success. If we win THIS series, it’s a success. But underdog stories happen all the time everywhere. Take everything you can get, you know. I’m not saying we’re winning the Finals. Or even this series. But it COULD happen. GS Warriors ’06?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Underdog? Dude, you guys are the higher seed, people are rooting for the Bulls because THEY are the underdog. Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Rondo are all better players then anyone on the Bulls (except Derrick Rose, who is a rookie)

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

I mean, isnt Paul Pierce the same guy who LEGITIMATLY said that he was “the best player in the world”. And their was actually a argument for it. As Malcom X once said in a totaly different situation this is a case of ” chickens comming home to roost”

  • ab_40

they still can make the ECF but still it’s gonna be tough… well even tougher withou their best two inside scorers and one of the top3 defenders in the L

  • Superman Osman

Moose, seriously THE underdog? Are you high son?

  • Joe A

The Celtics as an underdog comment is valid. Lets say that both teams played the whole season as their rosters are now (KG and Powe not available, Bulls with Salmons, Miller and without Nocioni) I guarantee you the bulls would be the higher seed. But to the topic at hand, ACL injuries are no joke, and I hope Leon can come back from it next season.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

The Celtics were not an underdog until the Bulls won game one. The Celtics were not an underdog until Garnett went down and everybody else went down with him. The Bulls have more depth at the moment, and there are a lot of people who are thinking that the Celtics are no good anymore, like you. I believe Malcolm X also said (of course, in a totally different situation), “I am for justice, no matter who tells it.” If an argument for a team’s underdog-worthiness involves justice. The seeds don’t matter anymore with all of the injuries; the seeds are based on the past. This is based on the NOW.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

SURELY an injured Garnett is on par with a healthy Scalabrine…? Having said that, I would LOVE to see Scalabrine go for 14 and 7 through the playoffs…come on boy, here’s your chance for that finals MVP trophy red dog!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

No moose, you are wrong. The Bulls still have less talent on their team. The Celtics have 4 guys that could be future hall of famers playing (Rondo, Pierce, Allen, Marbury) and another guy who will be getting into the hall of fame coaching them (Doc Rivers). They also have a far supperior coaching staff and a larger active fan base than Chicago. The Bulls are a young team with a young coach. This even cost them the game yesterday (Vinny wasted their last time outs and left them with nothing after Ray Allen’s last 3 pointer). The Bulls are a very exploitable team. However their defensive intensity (see Thomas, Tyrus for further proof) and what they do on the fast break are what keeps them making the Celtics struggle. The Bulls are simply the team that is playing like a team. The Celtics have not been using team work, and because of the already stated Chicago defense, their stars are struggling. That being said, the Celtics still have more talent on their team. The Bulls have 0 finials MVPs, 0 3 point contest champions, and 0 Coaches of the Year. The Celtics have the ablity to run circles around them. But as i already said, the Bulls are playing harder, and are motivated because THEY ARE THE UNDERDOG. That is their driving force. If you think the Celtics are underdogs, you have just re-defined the word. Never before has the phrase UNDERDOG been used in reference to sport about a team that has A) more wins. B) Better players C) Better Coaching Staff D) Home Court Advantage…..SO STOP MAKING EXCUSES, YOUR SEASON HAS BEEN OVER FOR A WHILE AND THIS IS THE ICING ON THE CAKE FOR IT ALL. EVERYONE THOUGHT YOU HAD A EASY OPPONET IN THE BABY BULLS, WHO ARE INDEED BABIES. THEY ARE LEAD BY A MAN-LIKE ROOKIE WHO IS MAKING ME THINK IF HE REALLY IS A ROOKIE AND NOT SOME 10 VET WHO CHANGED HIS STATUS. YOU WERE THE HEAVY FAVORITES TO WIN THE SERIES, AND YOU ARE FAILING. YOU ARE NOT THE UNDERDOGS.

  • Superman Osman

    COSIGN the cat.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

I understand what you are saying, BETCATS, and I agree for the most part. We might have more talent on our team. But it’s the TEAM thing. We were not in that game for a long time last night. You saw how they were playing, Pierce looked like he had given up. Our life is gone without Garnett, we have absolutely no frontcourt left, and our bench is very thin. They have fire, intensity, desire . . . and to me, it looks like we’re out of it. I think that I misused the word “underdog”. I guess I’m just feeling bad for the C’s and myself. I was wrong. But I’m feeling awful low about the whole situation, so I guess I blew it out of proportion. I mean, they blocked our shot 13 times last night. 13! We can do better, we need to put in a better effort. But the fire that we need just isn’t there. I see what you’re saying. What I mean by “underdog”, I guess, is the team who I would pick against. And, I hate to say it, but these last two games have me convinced that the Bulls can beat us in a seven game series, and if Ray doesn’t stay as hot as he did in the last game and Rondo doesn’t keep performing at uber-high levels, we’re done in the first round. I would pick against the Celtics and for the Bulls, making the Bulls the underdog in my opinion. Maybe I’m taking it too literally and kind of altering it to my own version. They are playing better than the Celtics. I know that we have more wins and a higher seed. But it’s about right NOW, not about what got us there. Which was a healthy Garnett who had a spirited Celtics team on his shoulders. That is a luxury we don’t have anymore.

Obviously the Celtics aren’t underdogs if you look at the them as a whole, look at their great record and their entire season. But the Celtics of right now – with their pride hurt and a decimated frontcourt – are they underdogs relative to the Bulls? Maybe.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

i just cant see that being the case. The celics have so much talent on the court and in the coaching staff, that if they lose the series, it is A) a huge upset and B) the biggest failure to utilize what you have.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

@ Joel: Wow, thanks, I’m flattered. Do I look older then, too? Because my Blogger picture is of me a few months ago. But thanks a ton! Wicked flattered.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

BET, a failure of Boston to utilize what you have will be lack of spirit. And the last two games showed that. Yes, it finished great. But, in our current state . . . I’m nervous, as every Celtics fan should be. Nervous for THIS series, I mean.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

I agree with what BETCATS alluded to. The Bulls are in the position they are right now because as 8th seeds they’ve nothing to lose. It’s a great position to be in, as “true” underdogs, since you can do no wrong. A position where you have the freedom to be proactive, and mistakes are easily forgiven (ask Vinny). The Celtics, on the other hand, entered this series as 1.) the 1st seed, and 2.) defending champions. They had everything to lose. But now, having lost their best starter *and* best bench player, with much lowered expectations, I think the Celtics have begun to view the Bulls not as an 8th seed, but as *equals*. I think… this shift of perspectives can only help the Celtics. They won’t win pretty, but I think they’re going to gut it out and win at least a game in Chicago.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

  • BostonBaller

Jackie Moon The playoffs are a different animal and sometimes the Reg season means NOTHING, therefore those Laker wins were nice fr them but proved very little.

ENDS If Howard went down I don’t believe any REAL Celtics/NBA fan would be happy.

BETCATS I don’t believe it would be the biggest failure to utilize what we have IF we were to lose to the Bulls. Injuries are not an excuse to losing but they do change the complexity of a team and how they play. Having more talent doesn’t always mean more wins, chemistry is important and that weakens when pieces are missing. No excuses, throw the ball up and let’s play ball.
