NBA Suspends Howard For Game 6

by Ryne Nelson

Shortly after getting the press release from the Orlando Magic, I took a couple minutes to read the commentary about Dwight’s ‘bow to Samuel Dalembert’s dome. It quickly became clear that the vast majority of readers agreed a suspension was in order. It wasn’t even a debate, to be quite honest.

The NBA reviewed the play, and it didn’t take long to agree. Howard will be bringing a suit to Philly for Game 6. As the Orlando Sentinel reports:

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has been suspended for Thursday’s Game 6 against Philadelphia.

Howard received a technical foul in the first quarter of the Magic’s 91-78 win Game 5 over the Sixers Tuesday night for throwing an elbow at Samuel Dalembert as the pair fought for position underneath the basket.

Curiously, Howard wasn’t even hit with a flagrant foul. He was allowed to finish the game with a beast of a performance and, more critically, a win for the Magic. In Game 6, it’s fair to say Orlando will rely almost entirely on outside shooting, as both Courtney Lee and Howard will be absent.

Once leading the series 2-1, the Sixers better hope they can capitalize on this “gimme” of a game and force this matchup to seven games.

Magic in 7, lose to the Celtics in 6. Stern dusts his shoulders off.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Celtics in 6, eh? I was thinking the same as well. Strange how weak the Magic really are. I guess Jameer really *is* that good.

Jukai’s commenter status is currently set for dead…….stupid.

Correct call but it won’t matter in the long-run. magic in 7 is whats gonna happen. still this is a good season for the sixers. we’re taking baby steps but we’re getting there.

  • Coach Master

Ryne, agreed. I bet Stan’s head is exploding.

  • D12FSU

So what, Dwights gonna be all rested up for game 7. Also, Magic are 2-o this year without dwight (both on the road) just sayin. PLUS, once the bulls and celtics are done killing each other in overtimes, the Magic will be able to take em down

  • rlz

But it would have mattered if it would have been called this way in the game. It happened in the first quarter, and without Howard’s 24/24, the Sixers may well have won that game. Then they’d be up 3-2, and getting ready to play a game 6 at home with Howard sitting out as a result of this suspension. Then Sixers in 6 seems possible, even likely.

I hope Orlando swings for the fences and chucks up threes all night.

  • http://www.okayplayer.com doyouwantmore

I’ve seen Kobe throw worse elbows (on purpose, Western Conference Finals, bloody noses) and not get suspended. He’s just sneakier and more of a…well, more of a snake about it I guess you could say.

  • illydiva

I don’t understand how he wasn’t called for a flagrant during the game and ejected. The officiating IS suspect in these here playoffs.

  • truthteller

I don’t get why Howard was suspended. If the league felt it was that serious, why didn’t he get ejected? He got a technical foul, right? That wasn’t enough? I don’t get it.

  • Diesel

Was the elbow during the final shot of the game? Cause if that’s the case its ok because refs don’t decide games.

  • Tommy Patron

    NBA-League of mutable rules enforcement.

  • truthteller

Diesel, tell that to the Chicago Bulls!

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

I think the uproar that SLAM produces dictates officiating and suspensions.

I didn’t think the elbow was that bad. Definitely not on any Karl Malone-type isht. It was just too obvious to ignore. Especially after Chuck wouldn’t just shut up about it.
    Jukai is a little biatch.

  • Diesel

Can we all agree that if you want to throw a punch, elbow, kick to the nuts, etc.. all you have to do is wait till the final seconds of a game. Then, its just considered a hard foul. You may even avoid a flagrant/technical if the ball is within a 5 foot radius. The NBA – Where Rule Interpretation Happens.

  • Luke

@Ryne….strange how weak the Magic really are?Idiot..

  • rockko

whats worse is that the nba assessed rondos karate chop on miller AS A GOOD, HARD FOUL. if i was a bull, at the end of tomorows game ima punch pierce in the mouth as he is going up for a layup. since at the end of the game its just hard, playoff basketball

  • Superman Osman

Co-sign Ryne. Everything except that thing about Jameer being really good. Not buying it

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

yeah, i dont see why he got ejected. if it was bad, why didnt he leave with an ejection. the nba is just super gay this year. the refs suck nuts, and the league is making stupid fines.
(like rick, and nate getting fines)
i dont see how any of this is irrelevint to the nba lossing tons of money.(sarcasm.)

  • Harlem_World

The other thing these playoffs have shown me is how poor of a coach Stan Van Gundy is. Not as bad as Del Negro but all that acting up on the sideline and being so emotional and demonstrative is NOT good coaching. Also, it doesn’t take a genius to work out there is nobody associated with the Sixers who has a hope in hell of stopping Howard one on one. GET HIM THE DAMN BALL. He should get a touch on almost every trip down the floor. If they double kick out to your $100M dollar man (still can’t believe that) or Hedo. If they single coverage, let him dunk you through to the next round.

The Magic don’t have a bondafide scorer. they have a couple of 2nd options running the show. And, Ryne, ‘Meer is my favorite player in the NBA, but he doesn’t put the Magic over the top. Cavs and Celts would take ‘em, and honestly so would any team out of the West’s final four.

  • Superman Osman

Maybe the Magic should start ‘Join in the Dance’ at center

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Khalid, what do you do with EB when he comes back?

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

  • Jacob

    right call

  • adbphilly

Why in god’s name did the ref’s not eject Dwight. Why would he even elbow sammy d anyway? Rashard just hit a three at that point. I mean i could see if they were fighting for the ball but i mean cmon. If howard was ejected the crowd would have not been a factor, the sixers could have got game 5 and then wrapped it up tomorrow in game 6 because he would have been suspended on top of that. The magic have gotten away with so much stuff this series. Especially howard. Every time he posts up and spins, he picks up his pivot foot. Even commentators are like “Where’s the walk?”. And Dileo wasnt whining. He was just pointing out that dwights in the 3 sec area all the time. Philly is gonna be a zoo tomorrow. Let’s go sixers. Stick it to the magic.

  • that dude

The NBA needs red and yellow cards.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Eboy is awesome.

do you work for eboy ted

  • The Last Kings Fan

Anton, the Magic wouldn’t play the Celtics until the ECF…

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero dma

    1/4 is cavs/heat. 2/3 would be magic/celtics…

  • Quail

yea, wut about rondo? he knocked brad miller’s damn tooth out. Sam Dalembert didnt even bleed.

  • TwinParadox

Right call, but still…how the hell was still on the floor after that shot?! Dude should have been watching the rest of the game for that elbow. Happy Birthday tho Dwight, you’ve finally become a man.

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

They say a coach rubs off on his players, and I say that elbowing Sam Dalembert in the face officially qualifies Dwight Howard as a Master of Panic.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Heat are seeded 5th. But will still play the cavs if they get on top of ATL…but they wont. ATL versus CAVS in next round.
    I think we’ll see a MASSIVE upset here though….
PHILLY vs CHICAGO 2nd round! That would be amazing.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Dallas will ride shotgun all the way through to the WCF against LAL, I can see Dallas wincing by Nuggets in 7 games but have nothing left for LAL. Cleveland are coasting along, will meet little resistance against a Hawks lineup that got spurred on by the HEATs do-or-die approach last game… JOE JOHNSON HAS AWOKEN! Watch him get 35 in the decider.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

@The Last Kings Fan: no, the ECF is Cavs vs. either Celts or Magic

  • donlaker

dwight needs a rest anyway , the magic cant beat the celtics or the cavs

  • luke

Yeh thats why they DID beat the Celtics and all of the games against Cleveland huh..idiot.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Why the double standard? Does Stern *want* the zombie Celtics in the Finals, or a Celtics-Cavs ECF that badly? Is a thrilling upset that hard to stomach?

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

In all seriousness, I just saw both fouls again. Both are violent and needlessly so. But the reason why Dwight and not Rondo gets hit with the 1-game is probably *context*. Rondo was making desperate play in a tight game to stop an open layup. Dwight’s elbow, however, wouldn’t've benefited his team one bit since it happened after the ball was scored. Seen from that light, it makes sense, though I don’t fully agree.

  • rabn21

“that dude Posted: Apr.29 at 7:27 pm
The NBA needs red and yellow cards. ”
they kinda do technical foul 1 and technical foul 2, but I could see the hilarity of the officials actually getting the cards out of their pockets during the games.

    The punishment suits the crime!

I do find it interesting that some posters don’t think a suspension is called for, when a play hits another player in the head with and elbow, intentionally. I guess it does show the level of fanaticism that can be reached. The type that throws all logic aside.
