Alonzo Mourning Is Critical of Jackson and SVG

by Ryne Nelson

Sometimes NBA coaches truly aren’t cut up for the job. For instance, some media is saying the Eastern Conference Finals exposed COY Mike Brown, whose assistant coaches essentially ran the huddles.

Different coaches have different styles. Stan Van Gundy and Phil Jackson couldn’t be any different in their command, but one thing’s for certain: Both men understand how to coach!

Alonzo Mourning, apparently, doesn’t think so, taking shots at both coaches recently. Read what he had to say about Jackson:

“To tell you the truth, Phil doesn’t have to do anything but call time outs,” said Mourning, the former NBA star who helped lead the Miami Heat to the 2006 championship and twice was the league’s defensive player of the year.

“Kobe is the facilitator. He is the one driving the mission of this particular team right now,” Mourning said. “The communication level he has with his teammates out there, you can just see it.”

“I think Phil is just showing up, to tell you the truth, and Kobe is doing all the work to make this team successful.”

Sure, it was comical to watch Kobe doin’ work with Pau Gasol on the clipboard toward the end of Game 3, but Jackson only calls the timeouts? Sounds like someone’s salty over all those years Phil and the Bulls owned him in the Playoffs.

Mourning, a proclaimed Magic supporter, didn’t stop at the Lakers sideline. He took a slight shot at the other, questioning Van Gundy’s defensive tactics:

“When I see the way Orlando is playing that pick and roll, I mean it’s just ridiculous,” said Mourning.

[...]

“It sort of puzzles me with Stan because he was under the tutelage of Pat Riley, who is obviously a huge defensive advocate, that he wouldn’t take a more aggressive approach, especially with the pick-and-roll play. I didn’t understand his approach.”

Again, sounds more like leftover salt from Mourning’s days with the Heat in 2005 than legit criticism.

So what are we to think? Is Stan a Pat Riley lackey or (in Riley’s words) “the most important acquisition Orlando ever made”? Is Phil the Zen Master or just resting on his laurels?

  • http://www.woah.com nate the great

i miss zo tho. glad he made something here on slam.

  • http://slamonline.com Blaze

During the bulls winning days Jordan even said “we dont even need a coach to win”

  • Dave

    Phil whistles, too.

  • Tenorca

I’d disagree with ‘Zo but I’m afraid of him, even through the internet.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Blinguo

Kobe communicated well with Pau by not helping the “Spaniard” as he calls him, up off the hardwood. Kobe puts the K in Kommunicate. Kobe also communicated after the Dwight rip and strip block on the move to the basket in wild gestations to get a bail me out NBA(!) foul call, but “BALL DON’T LIE” (JVG knows too, the Sheed quotables) clank 1, but sadly not both.

    Also, Hedo + Zo = Z-Do.
    Like Z-Bo, but with a D.

Just like Z-Bo, but with a D… hope this doesn’t double triple quad post.

Sounds like Zo just has an opinion…
Wonder why that makes him salty, but makes media folks experts…
    Double standards anyone?

Wow – just plain high comedy. Long Live ZO!

    oww my kidney

Allenp: Do you want me to repost the article, or do you want to do it yourself…?

  • Syk

ZO needs to stick to pros vs joes. just because phil or stan don’t seem like they’re doing much in game he should know that both coaches are very detailed when preppng their team during practices, while watching film and in the locker room making adjustments.

  • niQ

sounds like mourning just likes to complain and point out the negatives of everyone. definitely not a fun person to be a around.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@nosybutt.com Allenp

    Jukai, what article?

  • http://www.garrettelliott.com Garrett

And once again, Zo proves why he’s a gigantic douche.

  • mj23

    Zo is an idiot.

i agree about the Phil Jackson comments. He just puts a system in place (Tex Winters’ system i might add) and just sits on the sidelines. even during those ‘exclusives’ where ABC listens in on the huddles, Jackson sounds bored. what do professional coaches really do besides call timeouts and make substitution patterns?

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero dma

and mourning does seem like a douche. on the G2 commercials, after he takes a sip, he looks like he’s about to spit it out.

  • http://www.myspace.com/weezyleezy337 Weezy F. Leezy

phil jackson was the only coach kobe wants to play for i thought..so that must mean something. stan van gundy’s voice cracks lol

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Maybe Alonzo should become a coach and show us how its done. And if things dont work out he could always force a trade to another team until they do.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Yeah, Zo. We can all see how Kob’s is “communicating” out there with his teammates. He’s “doing work”, so to speak. get outta here with that bull! I’m sure Gasol loved watching him throw yet another tantrum while he was prone on the court, waiting for “the ultimate teammate” to help him up…

  • Ralph ‘chaps’ Rodriguez

That’s how zo feels.. I don’t really know if I shuld take the phil comments like a diss not a compliment but idk

I am just gonna quote someone else who summed it up for me:

“Allenp Posted: Jun.11 at 12:11 pm
Sounds like Zo just has an opinion…
Wonder why that makes him salty, but makes media folks experts…
    Double standards anyone? “

  • chintao

Regardless of his motivation for speaking, ‘Zo is right. Fphil is as afraid of Kobe as he was of Jordan. Also, Orlando’s defense has been suspect, and SVG should get his boys to work a little harder on defending the pick-and-roll. It’s hard for me to see how anybody can argue those points.

  • NJ4Life

I think I speak for all of Jersey when I say Zo should shut his mouth and be glad DWade ever won him a ring.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Hey Ryne… if you change the sequence of paragraphs around it makes quite a bit more sense. Stick Mike Brown down the bottom of your writing – don’t open a story on SVG with another coach with only a vague link to the header.
Don’t mean to be critical, just wanting to help. Thanks!

  • Tommy Patron

Alonzo Mourning is a miserable individual………..Some people like to look pretty out there with they muscles.

  • Tommy Patron

Anyone who doesn’t think Zo is a douche should check him out on Pros vs. Joes.

  • Double J

Phil Jackson, “Go out there and make me look GOOD”

  • http://mindyourbusiness@nosybutt.com Allenp

    Tommy Patron
I agree that Alonzo looked like a punk on Pros versus Joes.
I just don’t agree that expressing an opinion is some sort of crime. If they didn’t want to know what the man thought, why ask him a question?

  • http://www.unitedplayersofamerica.com John Delaware

Van Gundy is a lackey until proven otherwise. The man is a walking panic button.

  • Dave

“what do professional coaches really do besides call timeouts and make substitution patterns? ”
Swear. Abuse the players. Abuse the referees. Abuse the other team. Abuse the other coach. Tell the point guard to wake the fk up. Tell the centre to stop being soft. Tell the 2-guard to stick with the play and not just shoot as soon as he touches the ball. Remind the team to play defence. Tell the team it’s their destiny to go get this, so let’s go get this.
I used to love watching the Pat Riley coach cams with the Knicks…

and mourning does seem like a douche. on the G2 commercials, after he takes a sip, he looks like he’s about to spit it out.

Oh no, everyone knows Zo swallows.

  • http://www.myspace.com/freedmusic fredd

his opinion is not worthy since it doesn’t help

  • http://www.twahc.blogspot.com twahc

it’s just his opinion. look, this is the 37 comment (or rather our opinions) on Zo.

  • Justin

I always find these articles and people’s ridiculous comments hilarious. How were the Bulls doing before Phil got there? How were the Lakers doing before Phil got there? He took both of those teams to the Finals and they won. Even Kobe said that nobody ever won the Finals with a bunch of scrubs so of course he had superstars to do it. How come nobody laments Red Auerback for the teams he had, something like 10 HOFers on there. A lot of the coaching comes in practice, which nobody sees, and not during the games. Who cares if the system they used was devised by someone else? There isn’t one coach in the league that’s devised his own offensive schemes. I wish people would get a clue before they started spouting off on here and that includes ‘Zo

  • Will Lee

    i agree with Zo.

SVG just exposes him and make the Riley takeover a lot more credible.

And Phil Jackson nearly got swept in 2004 and 2008 respectively. Lakers won it by team defense this year, and Kobe’s shooting when it counts.

  • scruffz

Considering Mourning cried and biched his way to a ring, I’d prefer he shut up.

  • chintao

@ Justin ==> I believe there were some pieces missing prior to Fphil ascending to those positions. Fphil is a little b!tch, who only takes jobs where it’s almost impossible to lose. In fact, people should ride Fphil for losing way more often than he ought to.
