He Wants the Trophy, the Victory, the Glory

by Ryne Nelson

What can you say after such complete domination? What’s to discuss when every moment in Game 1 of the NBA Finals belonged to the Lakers?

The Magic were embarrassed. They were so thoroughly beat, in fact, that scapegoat talk was even abandoned. Jameer Nelson didn’t “throw off” the team’s chemistry. The entire Orlando squad performed at a sub-par level in no small part due to the tremendous play of the Lakers.

“Clearly, after the first quarter, we were totally dominated at both ends of the floor and on the boards,” Van Gundy said. “There was nothing I liked. . . . What was there to like?”

Searching for inspiration after the game, Van Gundy mentioned the “Memorial Day Massacre” in which the Lakers were drilled by 34 points by Boston in Game 1 of the 1985 Finals but came back to win the series in six games.

As Van Gundy tried to point out to his dejected team, comebacks after major beatdowns happened before. What he didn’t tell his team is that they’ve never happened against a Phil Jackson-coached team (the Zen Master’s something like 44-0 in Playoff series when his team wins the first game. Incredible.).

Andrew Bynum, despite foul trouble, was able to keep the Superman Howard from soaring, and the Mamba delivered quite possibly his most inspired game of the ’09 postseason. It was a thorough smacking — one without drama and controversy.

The game ended so much in the Lakers favor, there really aren’t words to describe it. That is, unless you are capable of going this hard:

Pass me the damn ball,
I don’t need a pick at all,
And don’t worry about my shot, because I’ma get that off,
I drops 40 on your double team,
Then I drop 81 on another team.

Dr. Dre, Snoop, 2Pac, NWA, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, DOC….there’s some good west coast hip hop, Teddy. I’m not saying that it’s better than NYC, but there is some hip hop/g-rap/g-funk that is off the chain over in LA.

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

Teddy, you mean that Common>>>>Jay-Z? Hmmmmm.

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

So you mean that Common>>>Jay Z? Hmmmmm.

So you’re saying that Common is better than Jay Z? Interesting….

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

Well, WAS off the chain in LA.

Sorry for the TRIPLE post, something’s wrong….me and Teddy had the same experience, looks like. Sorry guys…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Point taken Moose. I’m just saying, the West Coast has been really hyped up when there are only like, what, max 20 guys/groups that are good from there? I don’t know, lol, this is just a stance I take: some of the stuff that goes on with West Coast rap kind of played out to me.

  • ronak

none of these guys have got anything on flo rida though..

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

Teddy, the guys from the West Coast have been huge; obviously Pac is one of the most influential/best/most important rappers in the game, Dre is one of the best producers ever, Snoop re-wrote G-Funk and NWA invented *Gangsta* rap. There isn’t much of it; but West Coast hip hop is summa the most influential stuff around. But I love east coast as well, don’t get me wrong.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Moose: I understand. The problem is, what replaced these rap legends are a bunch of posers and wannabes (usually from the suburbs) who can’t rap, but think they can because they run around with bandanas and play Saints Row on their PS3′s.

how on earth is lil wayne the best rapper? he sucks, zack de la rocha makes him sound like a retarded child, I dont get it, at all

  • http://thesportcount.com Anton

Totally on point, Ryne. The Lakers decimated the Magic. Had nothing to do with chemistry.

(I wrote an extended piece on the myth of Jameer Nelson altering the Magic chemistry at the Count just today, incidentally).

I wasn’t even worried by Kobe jacking up so many shots, and missing a bunch of them. They were GOOD shots.

Kobe scores 40, has EIGHT assists, and people still say he’s a selfish player. LeBron dominates the scoring in EVERY game of the Eastern finals, and NO ONE says he’s selfish. A double standard based on many who just don’t like Kobe. It will always be this way. LeBron the Golden Boy and Kobe, the self centered player. Except for one glaring difference..Kobe has played in 6 finals, and will probably have 4 rings after this year. LeBron=0.
