He Wants the Trophy, the Victory, the Glory

by Ryne Nelson

What can you say after such complete domination? What’s to discuss when every moment in Game 1 of the NBA Finals belonged to the Lakers?

The Magic were embarrassed. They were so thoroughly beat, in fact, that scapegoat talk was even abandoned. Jameer Nelson didn’t “throw off” the team’s chemistry. The entire Orlando squad performed at a sub-par level in no small part due to the tremendous play of the Lakers.

“Clearly, after the first quarter, we were totally dominated at both ends of the floor and on the boards,” Van Gundy said. “There was nothing I liked. . . . What was there to like?”

Searching for inspiration after the game, Van Gundy mentioned the “Memorial Day Massacre” in which the Lakers were drilled by 34 points by Boston in Game 1 of the 1985 Finals but came back to win the series in six games.

As Van Gundy tried to point out to his dejected team, comebacks after major beatdowns happened before. What he didn’t tell his team is that they’ve never happened against a Phil Jackson-coached team (the Zen Master’s something like 44-0 in Playoff series when his team wins the first game. Incredible.).

Andrew Bynum, despite foul trouble, was able to keep the Superman Howard from soaring, and the Mamba delivered quite possibly his most inspired game of the ’09 postseason. It was a thorough smacking — one without drama and controversy.

The game ended so much in the Lakers favor, there really aren’t words to describe it. That is, unless you are capable of going this hard:

Pass me the damn ball,
I don’t need a pick at all,
And don’t worry about my shot, because I’ma get that off,
I drops 40 on your double team,
Then I drop 81 on another team.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@nosybutt.com Allenp

Myles forgot Andre 3000. He’s better than everybody on that list outside of Jay and Nas. And he might be better than Nas….

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

What are you smoking Allen … Dre is amazing, but… better then Nas. You is CRAzAY

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

Andre 3000 is not better than Nas. Have you heard “What if”, Allenp?

  • Enigmatic

Lil’ Wayne will be the best rapper alive when half of all living rappers both active and retired mysteriously die. That being said, Kobe is the best current NBA player. Lebron will get his, but I don’t think he’s passed Kobe yet. Those of us who continue to gripe and moan about today’s game and how we wish MJ was still playing would be smart to tune in and watch Kobe every chance we get.

  • Enigmatic

Yeah, no way is Andre better than Nas. Whenever I listen to Illmatic, I’m convinced only Biggie was better than Nas.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Dre aint even beter than Ghost. Fishschale, Ironman & Supreme Clientele > The Love Below. Now that I mention it MMM…Food?, Madvillain & The Mouse and the Mask > The Love Below. And the only way The Love Below could ever be better than Illmatic was if it had Halle Berry and Megan Fox’s contact info in the liner notes…

  • riggs

am i the only person who’s gonna cosign allen? oh well i guess great minds DO think alike.

  • donovanaird

MURS >>>>>>> East Coast rappers who haven’t done anything hot since 1988 ………………. or, best rap group/collective in the game right now is Qn5, check em out…

As for Kobe…………. oh, what the hell. He may as well get one. Even Laker haters will have to bow down. And I concede.

What are you talking about, Jukai?

  • JLP

Eboy, you’re making a fool out of yourself here. Grow up! Kobe’s the best and the Lakers play beautiful basketball. If you don’t like that, go find yourself another way to voice your frustrations with… yourself?

  • AR

    El-P>Better than everyone mentioned already*
    *Not really,but he’s up there.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@nosybutt.com Allenp

    Myles
So, you only gonna judge Dre based on The Love Below? But you include Ironman, which was as much a collabo as Cuban Linx?
Interesting choice there. I’ll put Andre’s work as a member of Outkast against any rapper in the game. Point blank period.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Okay, Ill take Ironman off the table. Dre has some classic verses, but I dont know about him as a solo act. Just aint the same to me.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

I just think its easier to judge an MC based on their albums. Consistency, versatility, growth and whatnot.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

I’ve gotta cosign Allen about Dre.

  • http://slamonline.com wayno

    nvm

  • http://slamonline.com wayno

    …..

  • http://mindyourbusiness@nosybutt.com Allenp

    Myles
Since this is a basketball website, I’m not going to belabor the point. I’ll just say that if you check the Outkast albums, and use the three criteria you used, Dre is killing just about all those cats you names. Except Jay. Point to an Outkast album and show me where Dre’s rapping showed a dropoff? A lack of wit, or complexity?
    That album does not exist.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

This is a basketball website, but its also a Kobe post in which Im sure absolutely no new ground will be covered. I dont think Dre ever fell off, dude is nice, but that aside hes only had one solo album for me to measure him off of. I just think theres a different dynamic involved with a duo than a solo act. Example would be Mos and Kweli. Kwe sounds so much better on that Blackstar album than on any of his solo albums past the first two. Or ever Rae without Ghost. Meth without Red. All dope MCs but, not as nice alone. Unless I have more to go off of, I might have to put Dre in that category. Its hard to maintain that level of excellence over multiple albums by yourself.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@nosybutt.com Allenp

I can respect that, since it’s the same argument I get from most cats when I throw Dre’s name in the mix. I disagree, but I can respect your opinion.
However, the flaws in Kweli, Rae and Meth were all evident even when they were part of a duo. I have yet to see a flaw in Dre.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Ok, so apparently I have an imposter now…both 4:16 comments were not me.

  • Jackie Moon

Can’t believe you all forgot about Dre. You’re going to turn him into the old him.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

can we start a debate about Nas and Jay? I still think Nas is the nicest. what about Illmatic vs Reasonable Doubt?

  • RM

  • Teddy-the-Bear

WOW, read his post James the b!tch. Allenp said “outside of Jay and Nas”. Stupid f*ck, a three year old has better reading comprehension skills.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Haha maybe that was a little too harsh.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Haha maybe that was a little harsh…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Double post. SLAMonline is glitching on my computer. Anyways:
@ donovanaird: You’ve got to be kidding me. With all due respect, if you really believe what you just said, you don’t know ANYTHING about hip hop, kiddo. The West Coast has only had a few good artists throughout the history of hip hop, to put it bluntly… New York is the best place for rap and any fan knows that. That jerry curl “gangsta” act got old after Ice Cube’s classic, second solo album.
And if you think the overrated, skateboarding, wannabe “Murs” is better than Wu-Tang, you’re probably from the suburbs I’m guessing Orange County).

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Allenp: Who did Myles list? JayZ, Nas, Ghostface, Mos, DOOM, Common, Rakim and Kane right?
Are you seriously trying to tell us, from one hip hop head to another, that Andre 3000 is better than Nas, Ghostface, Common, Big Daddy Kane, and RAKIM FOR CRYING OUT LOUD?
I REALLY hope you were joking. First of all, the only people Dre is better than on that list are DOOM and possibly Jay Z. Jay’s debut though, makes me rethink that. Dre can also compete with Common to some extent, I hear that. In fact, you could argue that Outkast has been consistently better than Common, but that’s another story. I’d rate them roughly equal.
But the Ironman, Escobar, BDK, and RAKIM are all better than Ghost.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    are all better than Dre*****
