All-Star ’10: First Balloting Returns

by Ryne Nelson

You gotta enjoy All-Star balloting. Three months before the game, we already know — with 90 percent accuracy — the starters in the NBA’s annual Popularity Show.

According to the first All-Star Balloting returns (see below), we’ll likely see these lineups (pending injury):

East: LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Dwyane Wade, Vince Carter, Dwight Howard.

West: Carmelo Anthony, Dirk Nowitzki, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Amar’e Stoudemire.

Bosh has an outside prayer of overcoming Garnett’s early lead. Nash and Paul should surpass the injured McGrady to vie for the final West guard starting spot. I give the nod to Nash because of his past ties with the Mavericks and their fans. Last season, you’ll recall, Nash failed to make the team, despite the game being in Phoenix.

Only the Lakers have a top 5 candidate in the forward, guard and center positions; although, it looks like Kobe will be the only starter.

Tim Duncan was an All-Star starter in every All-Star Game during the past decade, so maybe coming off the bench going into the 2010s isn’t such a bad thing.

Good for Melo finally getting the recognition he deserves.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Dec.10 at 3:38 pm
Oh, and don’t even try to tell me that Gilbert’s going to surpass one of the most popular players of all-time, Vince Carter.

  • AdrianC513 Posted: Dec.10 at 3:39 pm
How does Mcgrady have votes this is why fan voting is stupid. Go Lakers Im hoping Bynum gets the start.

  • niQ Posted: Dec.10 at 3:40 pm
“Nash failed to make the team, despite the game being in Phoenix.” That’s sad.

  • AdrianC513 Posted: Dec.10 at 3:40 pm
I wonder how many votes AI and Brandon Jennings have so Far?

  • Yesse Posted: Dec.10 at 3:41 pm
I would pick Bynum before Amare although Amare has more ppg.Amare should have been in the forward list anyway.I can’t believe people are still voting for T-Mac since he isnt even playing right now.I was expecting to see Jennings in the top 5.

  • OneSun Posted: Dec.10 at 3:41 pm
McGrady is clearly having a more
‘all-starish’ year than Nash. Yep, no doubt about it. I didn’t think he was but I guess China knows more than I do.

  • rish Posted: Dec.10 at 3:43 pm
Why Shaq gets 200,000+ votes is beyond me. And is Amar’e really a centre? Andrew Bynum should (hopefully) get voted in by the coaches.

  • niQ Posted: Dec.10 at 3:44 pm
Why the fcuk is T-mac on this list? Sucb fail.

  • cramzy Posted: Dec.10 at 3:47 pm
I still don’t get why they wont put Brandon Jennings on the ballot. They took AI off for awhile and put him back.

  • Brad Long Posted: Dec.10 at 3:47 pm
    ANDREW BYNUM!

  • niQ Posted: Dec.10 at 3:48 pm
I remember people always saying how Bosh gets votes only cause he’s in Canada. But that is false cause if it was true. Jose, Bargnani, and Hedo would all get the same amount of votes.

  • niQ Posted: Dec.10 at 3:49 pm
Based on this list of results, I will now attempt to vote for everyone not on the list. Good day.

  • niQ Posted: Dec.10 at 3:51 pm
OneSun. Your comment is heavily flawed. If you’re saying China is the reason for T-mac’s votes then Yao Ming would be right there next to him.

  • NDP Posted: Dec.10 at 3:56 pm
Slotting Amar’e at Center so that there’s not a no-name player for the West is hilarious. Andrew Bogut should also be coming off the bench for the East…dude has been putting in WORK.

  • niQ Posted: Dec.10 at 3:57 pm
Question. Has anyone ever entered the Hall of Fame and was never voted into the All Star Game?

  • kh Posted: Dec.10 at 3:58 pm
who is voting for McGrady? Really?

  • 360vue Posted: Dec.10 at 4:00 pm
pff some crazy, clueless voting goin on. i know it’s about voting for favourite stars but some need some sense, we should be trying to get best possible match up, not some past-their-sell-by-dates big names

  • tavoris Posted: Dec.10 at 4:02 pm
T-Mac is always gonna get China’s votes as long as he’s on the ballot. People that can’t vote for Yao now are voting for T-Mac just because he plays with Yao.

  • jumpman3224 Posted: Dec.10 at 4:08 pm
Tracey McGrady are you kidding me? What are your guys all-star ballots looking like? Mine goes WEST: Kobe, Melo, Pau, Amare and Brandon Roy. EAST: Wade, LBJ, Bosh, Superman and Jennings (write-in).

  • doyouwantmore Posted: Dec.10 at 4:15 pm
Bosh deserves more respect. He’s clearly more valuable than Garnett right now.

  • tavoris Posted: Dec.10 at 4:17 pm
@jumpman-I don’t disagree, but there are a lot of voters that NEVER watch NBA basketball. They vote based on familiarity (which would explain 2 or 3 of Carter’s All-Star appearances)

  • jumpman3224 Posted: Dec.10 at 4:27 pm
@tavoris – yeah, I know but its kind of sad. I mean no disrespect to TMAC but his own team doesn’t even want him on the floor. Maybe as NBA cares next project they should send some game film of Roy, Nash and Paul to China.

  • Sam Raphael Chadwick Posted: Dec.10 at 4:28 pm
I say people should vote chris kamen is as a write in vote as a center for the west but as they have but amare back in instead of playing his natural PF he wont get in its stupid!

  • Dacre Posted: Dec.10 at 4:34 pm
I don’t think the ‘write in’ players are getting recognised – Jennings would be up there for sure!

  • Dacre Posted: Dec.10 at 4:39 pm
NDP – Bogut will make the Allstar weekend, there is no doubt about that. Nash will get MORE votes coming into the final months so T-Mac’s early (and crazy) vote tally will dwindle. As most everyone has been asking – WHO’S VOTING FOR T-MAC? I secretly think there is a ‘bug in the sytem’…. Just so you all know – I’ve been voting for Vince Carter.

  • tavoris Posted: Dec.10 at 4:45 pm
@jumpman-plus, T-Mac has been claiming he’s coming back.

  • niQ Posted: Dec.10 at 4:59 pm
Fcuk you Dacre and albie1kenobi. I don’t think any of that was funny.

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Dec.10 at 4:59 pm
@dacre – Mister Magoo is pathetic and offensive. But that’s OK we’re online and we’re macho men, who cares about being sensitive to the different races?! And don’t even get me started on the gays!

  • Abdi Posted: Dec.10 at 5:01 pm
Chris Bosh is the best Forward on that list so far this year. It’s disgusting how kevin garnett can just take his spot even though Bosh has been the best player in the east so far in this season.

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Dec.10 at 5:04 pm
-Oh, and here’s my ballot – West: Melo, Pau, Kobe, Monta Ellis, Bynum, East: Lebron, Josh Smith, DWade, Rondo, Dwight Howard

  • The underrated one Posted: Dec.10 at 5:06 pm
@niQ: Exactly. Why would Chinese people vote T-Mac in and not Yao?

  • UnRel Posted: Dec.10 at 5:08 pm
tmac is such a wasted vote.. shouldn’t even be on the ballot.. just as greg oden should be removed.. the all star game should be played for the fans to enjoy the best at what they do.. and tmac.. well.. if we watch him perform is best skills.. we’d be watching him do 360s on one crutch..

  • Joel O's Posted: Dec.10 at 5:08 pm
Why am I “The underrated one”?

  • black pinoy Posted: Dec.10 at 5:10 pm
@ niQ it was a littl funny ..well maybe not.. im not chinese but if i was id get really offended.. chinese basketball is getting bigger every year and theyre really getting good at it.. in ten years alot of their players (that isnt named yao, wang, or yi)would be good enough to play for euroleague or something..w8 wang wouldnt make the euros..just saying

  • Jukai Posted: Dec.10 at 5:11 pm
Dacre: That was downright insulting to anyone of average intelligence. Don’t bring that ignorant ass stuff in here, man.

  • Jukai Posted: Dec.10 at 5:13 pm
Really, an old horse poster like Dacre should know better.

  • ab_40 Posted: Dec.10 at 5:21 pm
funny how the best center inj LA is chris kaman and he isn’t even on the ballot. I hope amaré is the only “center” out west because andrew bynum doesn’t dserve it. there are moare great forwards and guards out west. the east has zero legitimate options to start at point guard as a sure fire all star none. can’t we just give deron williams and steve nash to the east for this game only. it’s only fun with great point guards and the east hasn’t got any. and don’t even get started on gilbert arenas. the east is gonna get ran of the court again

  • The underrated one Posted: Dec.10 at 5:22 pm
    @Dacre: 小畜牲,你妈妈喊你回家吃饭。

  • BETCATS Posted: Dec.10 at 5:23 pm
Wallace better make it or i am boycotting the ASG. He deserves it more than Pierce or Josh Smith

  • BETCATS Posted: Dec.10 at 5:30 pm
And by Wallace i mean Gerald. Although Ben might too.

  • Johnson Posted: Dec.10 at 5:32 pm
this is disheartening b-roy under jkidd and tmac, i’m going to have to start doing my part and actually remembering to drop a ballot daily. The blazer broadcasters are going to be whining up a storm, at least its fun to hear old man river piss and moan, i mean its off topic but i can’t see how portland went from one of the best broadcasters of all time (the schonz) to one of the most annoying and embarrassing casters in mike rice just sad. Nice to see bynum getting his nod even if it is a little premature.

  • Anton Posted: Dec.10 at 5:57 pm
West: Birdman, Durantula, CP3, Duncan, Sean Marks
East: LeDanceDanceRevolution, Sun Yue, KG, Jennings, Shaq-a-Claus

  • tmw554 Posted: Dec.10 at 6:01 pm
t-mac the #2 west guard? does anyone voting even watch the nba?

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.10 at 6:03 pm
If those are really the top 5 East guards so far, i’m taking about 2 hours of my life this weekend and voting as many times as I can for Brandon Jennings.

  • DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS Posted: Dec.10 at 6:04 pm
@Dacre&albie1kenobi…..: as a chinese speaker(not fluent) and admirer(of their history) i am telling you that you are simply stupid(and propably uneducated). At the same time, what wrote to you “the underrated one” (it has to do with your mama and your country and i think it ain’t nice) is also extreme.
@the underrated one….:ni hao.wo shi xilaren. zheli de haizi changchang bu limao. qing yuanliang.
EAST: Rondo, Wade, Lebron, Bosh, Howard.
WEST: Nash, Kobe, Melo, Durant, Bynum .
OBSERVETIONS: Durant less popular than Pau?? Bargniani over Horford ????? Where is “Anna”?????????????????????????

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.10 at 6:07 pm
Hey Dacre, I didn’t know your White Power group let redn3cks out of the tr@iler park this early in December? Did they know you were going to be asking minorities what they wanted with their burgers? Oh wait, you were fired from your job because you were f**king your sister in front of all the customers. Get the f*ck out of here, you lowlife, inbred piece of sh!t.

  • DacresMother Posted: Dec.10 at 6:12 pm
Dacre, just because I had a threesome with a kangaroo and your uncle, conceiving you, does not mean you have to act like a ret@rd on here, alrighty mate? Croiks, a kola and a platypus just came into our trailer. We have supper!

  • BC33 Posted: Dec.10 at 6:14 pm
T-Mac doesn’t deserve to start he hasn’t even played a single game yet.

  • DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS Posted: Dec.10 at 6:15 pm
    EUROLEAGUE BREAKING NEWS:
Olympiakos completely destroyed Unkikaja Malaga and now leads the group(Josh had some nice moves and a follow dunk). I saw some highlights from Barcelona’s game today and (once again) Rubio has definitely some Pistol Pete in him….Yestrday Qyntel Woods led prokom to a surprise win over REAL mADRID. If Woods wasn’t a head case he would still be in olympiakos(we still love him, he is better player than Josh). Fotsis miraculus last second follow saved Panathinaikos at Russia….by the way: get ready to receive your VON WAFER back(THIS years Euroleague dissapointment). After he failed to average more than 5 minutes with Olympiakos, i expect him to be an NBA MVP canditate next year (in the steps of Brandon Jennings who was LAST years Euroleague disapointment).

  • tmw554 Posted: Dec.10 at 6:24 pm
@TADOne: yeah i voted for him too but hes a write in and might get overlooked

  • dankNuggs Posted: Dec.10 at 6:31 pm
Shaq over Al Horford, and Tracy Mcgrady starting even though he hasn’t played a single game. once again the fans have shown their ability to make the most moronic decisions possible

  • slamfan4life Posted: Dec.10 at 6:58 pm
    DERRICK ROSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MeloMan2.0 Posted: Dec.10 at 6:59 pm
i always vote iguodala and rudy gay in because u kno they wud make it alot more enjoyable…. But VOTE FOR MELO!! and bosh def deserves more love

  • El Chinas. Posted: Dec.10 at 7:17 pm
Man, we need to send Dacre into the gulag labor camp for poor taste in humor. Re-education needed.

  • dirty frank Posted: Dec.10 at 7:17 pm
West: Nash, Kobe, Melo, KD, Chris Kamann
East: DWade, Joe Johnson, J Smoove, LBJ, Dwight Really pisses me off that Amare is listed as a center. Will they ever fix the balloting? Should just vote for 5 players regardless of position. Where’s the Joe Johnson love?

  • dirty frank Posted: Dec.10 at 7:20 pm
I refuse to vote for Bosh due to his inability to get his team to 500.

  • Liam Posted: Dec.10 at 7:22 pm
wow mcrady is on but jennings isnt or tyreke evans man thats sad show some love for the rooks

  • dirty frank Posted: Dec.10 at 7:24 pm
    Alternate West:
    Nash, Kobe, Dirk, Pau, Bynum

  • Dave Posted: Dec.10 at 7:33 pm
Did Dacre really just say that?
    Seriously?
What is the, the f&$#ing nineteen forties?

  • JE Posted: Dec.10 at 7:37 pm
I can’t believe Jennings didn’t make the top 5. That’s probably already been said several times, but I didn’t feel like reading the comments.

  • RV Posted: Dec.10 at 7:48 pm
let me let the rest of the nation in on a little secret we have down here in Houston…WE ACTUALLY LIKE TMAC and so does the team. All this crap about feuds and freezing him out is nothing but rumors. He practices with the team, interacts with them, no issues with teammates, both aldeman and morey already set things straight. Tmac WILL play this year again with Houston….it’sa been confirmed by Morey himself.

  • Anton Posted: Dec.10 at 7:54 pm
All Greg Oden all star votes are valued at $1 per vote and will be paid to Darius Miles as part of his contract.

  • Nick Gibson Posted: Dec.10 at 8:04 pm
No love for KD. And Ray Allen is up near the top and no Joe Johnson…right.

  • LeoneL Posted: Dec.10 at 8:07 pm
Because of this return, I’m gonna go ahead and use all proxies I know to vote for Gerald Wallace…lol

  • lol Posted: Dec.10 at 8:08 pm
BYNUM over anybody is ridiculous hes a fat rebounder like shaq without his likability and scoring, shq is a all time great i mean slam themselves said that shaq was GREATer by 8 spots in their top 50 bynum shouldnt be above amare no matter what

  • Hangtime Hec Posted: Dec.10 at 8:36 pm
    Jennings> Rose. Just saying. Again.

  • Brad Long Posted: Dec.10 at 8:43 pm
I was hoping that Gilbert and Shaq would both make it just so they’d have to be on the same team for a night. AWKWARD!

  • Dice Posted: Dec.10 at 9:09 pm
    No Joe Johnson?

  • CoolMcFly Posted: Dec.10 at 9:12 pm
you guys are forgetting Derrick Rose everyone knows Derrick Rose is in the top 5 best point guards in the east right now and yea Brandon Jennings can score but an overall point guard battle Derrick Rose is amazingly better then Jennings no doubt about it Derrick Rose > Brandon Jennings

  • CoolMcFly Posted: Dec.10 at 9:22 pm
My all star ballot East: Derrick Rose, Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, Rashard Lewis, Dwight Howard West: Steve Nash, T-Mac, Durantula aka Skreech, Carmelo Anthony (do not care he should be starting), Amare Stud

  • Darksaber Posted: Dec.10 at 9:28 pm
On behalf of the few here who praise the man, i’d like to thank the fans for finally recognizing Dirk for the all star starter he is. Sure it’s early, and Yao or Tracy might overtake (wtf?) but i’m hoping Dirk gets his 1st vote in by the fans to necome a starter. Guess the crazy girlfriend thing brought sympathy, can’t be the performance, that’s been a given for years. And damn, Teddy RIPPED Dacre a new one earlier.

  • Darksaber Posted: Dec.10 at 9:59 pm
Oh and my unusual suspects for this year’s ASG: Crash (eff a Bron, check HIS stats), Drew Bogut, Chris Kaman, Youngbuck Jennings, that damn Houston lineup, Rondooooooo and Shannin (just for tge dunk-off, pretty please)

  • tealish Posted: Dec.10 at 10:08 pm
The Internet is filled with surprises. First a long-time, usually respectable poster in Dacre, posts some ignorant sh!t, then DIMITRIS comes out with some Zhong Wen. Good stuff.

  • tealish Posted: Dec.10 at 10:09 pm
Also, Dirk getting starting love is long overdue. Great for him.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.10 at 10:56 pm
Nice Dimitris, ni hui jiang zhong wen? Nice man!
    Co-sign RV and Darksaber.

  • matt Posted: Dec.10 at 11:31 pm
if i told you someone was averaging 19, 4 and 2 and shooting 41%, would you say “all-star”?

  • Pardeep Posted: Dec.10 at 11:39 pm
AI’s All-star streak is over. When he was waived by Memphis he was off the ballot. Still is 6th in voting but you could not vote for him for 32 days. He would have started but the waiving messed him up. He will probably do much better after all-star break but right now for another month AI is still going to be adjusting and everything and there is no way he is going to be able to put up the stats that are going to get him in to Dallas by February.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.11 at 12:15 am
The sad part is, I think that b!tch ablie1kenobi is Asian too–that’s just flat out shameful. Show some f*cking dignity, dumb@ss.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.11 at 12:18 am
I’m done with these two idiots, I’m going to cast my votes. Peace.

  • matt Posted: Dec.11 at 12:24 am
hey teddy you know you replied to the racism with racism right? nice dignity.

  • Darksaber Posted: Dec.11 at 12:27 am
Cosign Anyone surprised at Spanny speaking Mandarin. Now that’s deep, not an easy language to master… You go, Fotsis. (i am now more than convinced that Spanny let’s it rip here to get a rise out of the commenters, too much b-ball knowledge/love and real world chops to be some dumb hick. Then again, maybe he’s got multiple personality disorder)

  • Darksaber Posted: Dec.11 at 12:29 am
Teddy, oooooh saaaaaaa.. Ooooooo saahhhhhhhh. Let it go, man. Pretty sure Dacre feels a bit sorry for his post, usually a cool fellow to converse with, don’t you think?

  • MikeC. Posted: Dec.11 at 12:52 am
Does anybody remember when the ‘fans’ voted Grant Hill and Alonzo Mourning as East starters when Grant was missing his second straight season with ankle injuries, and Zo was missing the season while getting used to having a new kidney? One more reason why people can’t be trusted to do anything that requires a tiny amount of intelligence.

  • MikeC. Posted: Dec.11 at 12:55 am
McGrady gets my vote for “most valuable expiring contract”. Many GMs will be burning up all their anytime minutes trying to talk to Morey and Adelman at the trade deadline for sure.

  • Jukai Posted: Dec.11 at 12:58 am
Matt: I’m pretty sure southerners don’t constitute as a ‘race’ but yeah, Teddy could have gone the high route instead of resorting to lowering himself like that. In fairness, if I remember correctly, I believe Teddy is chinese (if I’m wrong, I apologize) so that hit him a little close to home. If someone insulted Australians (I think Dacre’s Australian if I remember correctly… once again, apologies if I’m wrong) then Dacre would have been just as harsh.
Darksaber: Spanny is a relatively intelligent fellow, which is why I’m always against having him banned (although I am guilty of breaking the rules to purposefully rile him up). Spanny would be a great, intelligent fellow to chat with if it wasn’t for his OBVIOUS bias for some players (Kukoc) and his blind hatred for others (Iverson).

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Dec.11 at 1:17 am
The offensive comment from earlier has been removed, but not every comment that references it. Apologies.

  • Jukai Posted: Dec.11 at 1:46 am
    Thanks Ben. Much appreciated.

  • J Posted: Dec.11 at 2:09 am
tmac 2nd on west guards. that’s a perfect example of why the league should reconsider the voting system. i think, imo, the fan voting should only be 50% of the criteria of who will make it to the ASG.

  • Hursty Posted: Dec.11 at 2:34 am
Bogut and Gerald Wallace should both make it for the East. You can’t really put B. Lopez or Harris on because of their records.
    T-Mac can’t be there either.
Ron Artest shouldn’t be there, but Ariza deserves consideration.

  • J Posted: Dec.11 at 2:55 am
^agree. but damn, Brook Lopez plays arguably as the best center on east right now.

  • Jukai Posted: Dec.11 at 3:33 am
Hursty: I’d rather have Brook Lopez on the team than Bogut, record be damned.

  • The Hoopistani Posted: Dec.11 at 4:10 am
if T-Mac gets healthy for the All-Star break and starts, I’m never voting for the All-Star game again.

  • Randy Brown Posted: Dec.11 at 6:21 am
I would rather lose my chance to vote and have it done by Americans only. It’s embarrassing to the sport that T-Mac might be in

  • rushmelo Posted: Dec.11 at 7:00 am
as far as the west goes its pretty flawless expect for t.mac being second on the guards list.but that’s not so shocking
considering he has been a fan favorite many years in the past it’s okay to see some of his ol’ fans show him love.even though it may not be realistic and practical.
the thing is its pretty sad to see such great talents never see the daylight of their maximum abilities.
    Greg Oden
i really wish he gets back soon and healthy
    T-MAC
    Yao
    many many more of them.
it takes so much to reach there and you come up short for no fault of yours.

  • rushmelo Posted: Dec.11 at 7:06 am
as far as the final starters go it will be WEST EAST
    Amare Stoudemire Dwight howard
    dirk nowitzki kevin garnett
    carmelo anthony lebron james
    kobe bryant vince carter
steve nash dwyane wade the reserves fo’ da west will be
    Billups,andrew bynum,,tim duncan,deron williams,kevin durant,brandon roy,Gasol or boozer EAST-paul pierce,mo williams,chris bosh,ray allen,joe johnson,gilbert arenas,gerald wallace

  • Darksaber Posted: Dec.11 at 9:16 am
@Jukai: and by “Iverson”, you ment KOURNIKOVA OF B-BALL, right? :-)

  • sunsnroses Posted: Dec.11 at 10:50 am
Nash failed to make the team last year in Phoenix because he had a minor back injury during All-Star weekend.

  • don Posted: Dec.11 at 4:56 pm
uh oh, i still don’t see deron’s name.

  • matt Posted: Dec.11 at 9:51 pm
hey randy thats a great idea, americans never vote wrong. oh. wait. didnt you guys vote in Bush TWICE?

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.11 at 10:46 pm
When did I say all white people, or even southerners? I didn`t mean to offend anybody but Dacre (and albie), so there. Just to clarify, I am NOT racist.
Also Jukai, I am Chinese, so no need to apologize.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.11 at 10:48 pm
Lol Darksaber, I agree with you about Spanny. Sometimes he seems like he knows his stuff, and other times he is very confusing. And he knows Mandarin! And English! And Greek! Pretty impressive.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.11 at 10:49 pm
If Deron Williams doesn`t make the All-Star team this year, something is seriously wrong with the NBA.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.11 at 10:50 pm
