All-Star ‘11: First Balloting Returns

by Ryne Nelson

They call this the NBA’s annual popularity contest. But, based on the first returns, All-Star voting should be called the Fan Idiocy Meter. Fan voting is a problem, folks.

In the past, we listed just the top-five vote getters at each position. But we’re getting more efficient at this table-making business, so we now present to you the complete results. You know, because it’s important to know that Luol Deng is 10th among Eastern forwards.

There’s a couple nice races this season. As always, Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose are neck-and-neck. Pau Gasol and Carmelo Anthony are fighting for that final forward spot in the West. Chris Paul and Kevin Durant are on the way to their first All-Star start.

@tony knorr —- You almost made sense; BUT Amar’e is in the Eastern conference now??? C’Mon Son.

  • tony knorr

@Dacre I know he is. I’m a huge celtics fan and KG fan as well as being a believer that Bron is the best player in the league today but nobody is playing better and being more of a difference maker for their team right now then Amar’e I know it will not happen but the guy deserves to start over KG.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Considering that Yao just got hurt this is what I think the team will look like, as the ‘league/ie the coaches/stern etc’ will get to round out the lineup.
    ____
    F Durant
    F ‘Melo
    C P. Gasol
    G Kobe
    G CP3
    _
    1 F Dirk
    2 C Duncan
    3 F Griffin
    4 G Manu
    5 G Nash
    6 G Williams
    7 F Odom

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@tony knorr – My apologies, when I read back over it I realised that you mentioned Griffin, K Love and Amare in the one sentance; but it was ME who presumed that you had put them all together on the one team… my bad. Seriously.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I’ve also been voting Amar’e in to start over LeBron.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Looking back over my lineup there are alot of guys that miss the cut (aren’t there always??) yet again….
    * Westbrook (there’s always another PG).
    * Paul Millsap ? (the “Chris Gatling” vote).
    * ‘an actual legit centre’ – Anyone know what the Tyson Chandler over/under is on getting a coaches nod?

  • http://slamonline.com nate

I can’t believe this rondo is ahead of derrick rose in voting ?? Wtf is this world coming too who is voting for that green goblin looking dude

  • hiphopcop

Bynum finally getting in, and Odom will probably get voted in by the coaches. Lakers might have 4 all stars this year. YEAH!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

There are way too many Lakers on these lists. That is ridiculous. And Steve Nash and Jason Kidd do not belong higher than Russell Westbrook. Damn you fans.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^Allenp..
so very true.. it westbrook doesnt make it im going to be so pissed

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

To be honest, since only the top two people get in by fan voting, it’s really not a big deal. the top two on each list are correct right now.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

And by correct I mean those players actually deserve to play in an all-star game. Dirk is the best forward in the West right now and he should be starting, but he’ll make the team on coaches vote.

  • http://google c_cantrell

yeah have to agree with ya on that one.. you do realize that thier could possibly be two rookies in the all star game right? how awesome would that be

  • Groves

im suprised their aren’t more votes for westbrook, okafor, Amare and blake griffin. okafor is playing at top 2 centre in the west level at the moment.

    my votes:
west- CP3, Westbrook, Melo, Dirk, Okafor
east- Rondo, Wade, LeBron, Amare, Dwight

  • The Philosopher 2.0

If anyone voted for JaVale McGee, YOU ARE ON CRACK!

  • whoooo!

i saw Nene listed on the West centers and initially read “None”, which would actually be the beset choice.

  • Lamont

The goal of the all-star game isn’t to choose the “best” players. It’s to choose who want to see play. People just have really poor taste

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Like brewster said, im voting for none of the above.

  • http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/ Jukai

@Dacre: You’d have Odom in over Love?

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Title should read “early returns for ASG fan votes…. FOR ME TO POOP ON!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

starters—P.Gasol,Nowitzki,Durant,Bryant,Nash— bench—Okafur,Duncan,Anthony,Ellis,Paul,A.Jefferson,D.Will starters— Howard,Garnett,James,Wade,Rose bench— Shaq,Amare’,Granger,J.Johnson,Felton(unless Rondo is ready) Pierce, Barga (um, the Raptor)

  • KB8toSG8

    Deserving:

West : Paul/Williams, Kobe, Melo by a mile, Dirk and Marc/Bynum ( WTF?! Yao?!)

East : Rose/Rondo, Dwayne, LeBron, KG, Howard

East seems set. West seems screwed to this point…..Pau won’t be bad but Durant over Melo?!?! And Yao?!

  • bashmo

whaa? Slam Online…CP3 started the 09 All Star game in Phoenix, just thought you should know.

In my opinion: WEST – CP3, KB, Melo, Dirk, Nene(I Guess, iunno hes the only solid option at Center this season)
EAST – Rondo, DWade, Bron, Stoudemire, Howard.

The eastern all star starting lineups at the 2,3,4,5 have been the same for the last 3 years. Fan voting is wack.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

For me Kevin Love is THAT guy…the one that most everybody would say ‘should have made the team in hindsight’….In all fairness, if he truly does get picked by the coaches I’m in with the thumbs up. He’s definitely the most blue-collar allstar I’ve ever seen….even more so than the great Charles Oakley or the ineffable Mt Mutumbo!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    REPLY @Jukai by the way/..

  • Crustified-Jalepino

@nate don’t be so nasty like that other goblin dude from boston. I hate to break this down to most of yall but it is the FANS that pay the bills here so stop crying like babies & let the coaches decide the rest of the teams, there are always hurt feelings before ASG but thats what motivates better than average cats to become all stars next year. @DACRE : Love is more blue collar than Oakley ? r u mental ? Do you think Love could step to Barkley as an eg.? Oak would blow Love out of his left nostril for fun & then pop his blue collar. gtf0 philosopher 0.2 is bummed cos he voted Ben Wallace :-) Remember kids smoking baking soda is just as bad.

  • Crustified-Jalepino

R U shocked tarzan ? like REALLY ? LIKE get out of town shocked ? WHO CARES who you don’t vote for.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Rondo over Rose, seriously? WTF people. Rose is 3rd on the MVP list at nba.com and espn.com, he’s been one of the, if not the best player in the east for the start of the season. Rondo’s assists, I know, their nice. But ‘C’mon Man!’ This sh*t just pisses me off.

  • skeletonman

vote ginobli, he should start for the west

  • Armando

just keep voting for Yao. If the league doesn’t change the ballot and list Gasol as a C, as he will start anyway.

    West:
    G-Bryant
    G-Paul
    F-Durant
    F-Griffin
    C-Gasol
    RG-Westbrook
    RG-Williams
    RF-Anthony
    RF-Nowitzki
    RC-Love
    WC-Nash
    WC-Ginobili

    East:
    G-Rose
    G-Wade
    F-James
    F-Stoudemire
    C-Howard
    RG-Rondo
RG-Wall (a better individual player and far more exciting than Felton, Allen, etc.)
    RF-Smith
    RF-Pierce
    RC-Horford
    WC-Noah
    WC-Bosh

    Tough cuts:
Scola, Gordon, Johnson, Roy, Curry, Garnett

  • Armando

There could me made an argument for Jameer Nelson as well. His stats doesn’t pop out, but he is the key to Orlando’s play. He is a better player than Felton imo, but most people just look at the stats, not the actual play.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@Armando – I for one like what Jameer Nelson can offer the Magic on the court, but I’m not really in favour of watching him play in the ASG, running around chewing with half his mouth guard hanging out…it’s worse than watching LeBron chew his finger nails when he’s sitting….!?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

…Or Kobe doing his “lower Jaw dilocated/Mamba thing…”

  • James

    East Starters (probable):
C- Dwight Howard F- Lebron James F- Kevin Garnett G- Derrick Rose (i think he’ll pass rondo, especially with him missing a couple weeks) G- Dwyane wade

Bench: C- Andrew Bogut F- Amare Stoudamire F- Paul Pierce G- Rajon Rondo G- Raymond Felton WC- Josh Smith WC- Danny Granger (bosh will probably get it but granger deserves it.

West starters: C- Yao Ming (ugh, this is why fans shouldn’t be allowed to vote for anything) F- Kevin Durant F- Pau Gasol G- Kobe Bryant G- Chris Paul

Bench: C- Tim Duncan F- Dirk Nowitzki F- Carmelo Anthony G- Deron Williams G- Manu Ginobili WC- Russel Westbrook WC- Lamar Odom.

If (when) yao can’t play, i think putting either paul millsap or al jefferson as a replacement is fair. I could see kevin love or blake griffin being a replacement choice, too.

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

How the eff does Love only have 81,000 votes?! How many 20-20 games does he need?

  • Blackphantom

Here are my all-stars for the West
    G-CP3
    G-Kobe
    F-Carmelo Anthony
    F- Dirk Nowitzki
C- (I completely hate the fact there isn’t really a viable C in the west currently but I have to choose)Andrew Bynum
    Reserves(no particular order):
    Tim Duncan
    Kevin Love
    Deron Williams
    Manu Ginobli
    Kevin Durant
    Blake Griffin
    Russell Westbrook

  • Blackphantom

I would make a east roster but I think people’ll be pissed since I wouldn’t include Chris Bosh

  • jay

    Rondo is agrat choice

  • Mark James

    Rondo is a great choice

  • BostonBaller

Let’s not complain about fan voting this year, it only gives us gas and stresses us out. lol. I agree w/ allenP for the most part about the top 2 in fan voting so far except Ming. (hurt too much) and as far as hating on Shaq, it’s just the bitterness coming out b/c the big fella is playing well again. No, I don’
t think it should be an all Celtics starting lineup but one could argue that if health, all five could be on the team (relax, I said COULD) I would love to see a real basketball argument against one of them making it. I might even vote once before the cut off. Have fun guys and gals.

  • big d

garnett hahahaha it must be a group of voters voting over and over garnett not good and never was hahaha a joke
