All-Star ‘11: First Balloting Returns

by Ryne Nelson

They call this the NBA’s annual popularity contest. But, based on the first returns, All-Star voting should be called the Fan Idiocy Meter. Fan voting is a problem, folks.

In the past, we listed just the top-five vote getters at each position. But we’re getting more efficient at this table-making business, so we now present to you the complete results. You know, because it’s important to know that Luol Deng is 10th among Eastern forwards.

There’s a couple nice races this season. As always, Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose are neck-and-neck. Pau Gasol and Carmelo Anthony are fighting for that final forward spot in the West. Chris Paul and Kevin Durant are on the way to their first All-Star start.

DWill won’t start while Kobe and Chris are in the West, but can he at least get more votes that Manu?!

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Shaq is STILL second most amungst East centers? Republicans are right, the general public are idiots.

So much for everyone outside of Miami not liking LeBron James…

  • http://google c_cantrell

blake griffin better make the all star game

  • Drew

Why is Yao Ming and Andrew Bynum even on the ballot. Bynum has played 2 games so far this season and Yao Ming has only a handful himself. Most fans are freaking idiots!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I DO NOT wanna wish injuries on ANYONE, but IF D Wade got injured, it would be kinda dope if they started both Rose and Rondo at the guard spots. I wish Rose was starting but if anyone deserves it over Rose, it’s Rondo (even if I personally believe it should be Rose starting).

  • MikeC.

@Enigmatic – I had a hard time with that vote. Amare was an easy pick for me as a Knick fan, and since he’s putting up beastly numbers for a solid team. I was torn between KG and Lebron for the 2nd forward spot. I ended up going with Lebron based on individual performance and the Heat’s current streak. It doesn’t mean I can’t boo him on TV when I watch the game though.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Luis Scola and Caron Butler over Kevin Love? And Beasley didn’t even make the top 10? No love for Sota. And Yao Ming SHOULD NOT start for the West. Neither should Bynum. They should just start Dirk or (Pau) Gasol at center.

  • Sizzle

@Enigmatic – Haters showing respect for the best player in the game.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

There isn’t a Western ‘center’ who deserves to play in the ASG.

  • Bruno

between the west centers I pick Marc Gasol at least you know he’s gonna hustle all game long then Camby or Okafor, the rest sucks

  • TheTruth

    @ryne nelson
The way manu is playing right now he should be ahead of kobe.

& wtf how come kevin (love) aint getting no love? That boy has been playing better then every one of those pfs

  • spit hot fiyah

i think the best way to get rid of this system is for everybody to conspire to vote in someone like keith bogans or jamario moon or sasha vujacic into the starting line up, if we could get like a MASS campain going and actually were able to vote in jeff teague or someone like that the league would have to shut it down right. Let do this SLAM, get this started!

  • JTaylor21

I think that Melo should be starting over KD and why the hell are ming and bynum even getting votes and both of them have rarely played this year. The nba should just cancel this useless fan voting and put it in the hands of the players and coaches.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Happy to see Shaq 2nd. Once he’s gone, this event will be a little less entertaining.. A little surprised, but happy for him.. Plus, the west’s centers just looks sad..

I was picking Marc Gasol too, simply cause I felt Memphis needed representation. I hope Ming turns down the all-star game.

  • KoBynum716

fisher and kidd have more votes than monta…

  • http://afjkl.com Jukai

Oh, and just cause I like to keep it updated, my all-star list:
West starters: Paul, Kobe, Carmello, Dirk, Gasol
West Reserves: Deron, Manu, Durant, Gasol, Griffin, Nash, Love
East Starters: Rose, Wade, Lebron, Stoudemire, Howard
East Reserves: Rondo, Johnson, Granger, Horford (only cause Noah will be injured), Garnett, Allen, Bogut

  • http://google c_cantrell

fan voting is getting out of control

  • Jose

I’ll give Camby or Okafor the West spot cuz Okafor hasnt been horrible and Camby still is pushin to help out the blazers….it’s surprising to see the lack of All-star Centers for the West tho…I say just put Duncan back in the Center category

  • the truth

how does kevin love not get a spot? and how the fck is d will not at least 3rd in the west

  • http://Slamonline.com Rocksinmypants

    @ truth- it’s cuz he’s white

  • http://www.slam.com Martey

Yao is probably there because his core fanbase is 1/7th of the planet’s population

damn Deron Williams needs some votes! and where the fck is Big Al? Lamarcus Aldridge?

  • Flight

I can see Westbrook getting the coaches’ vote in. Hopefully the same happens to Griffin. The clinic he’d be putting on in that rookie/sophomore game would be joke. Those highlights need to be seen in the main game on Sunday.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

    I’ll co-sign Jukai roster

Are you serious? Russell Westbrook should have waaaay more votes, maybe its because im an OKC fan but still, he is having a very productive season

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/32JSE Yesse

Diesel, i voted for Shaq because he is an entertainer, not because of his numbers. I am still somewhat disappointed by the votes.

Yesse – being funny off the court should not be a criteria for all star voting.

  • max

why is haywood getting over 120000 votes. whos voting this guy? hes not chinese and last I checked, chandler was the one klling it down-low for the mavs. So effin ridiculous, haywood is closer to starting in the ASG than Dirk!

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

I don’t understand why people have a problem with the voting system. At the end of the day it’s the fans who decide who the stars are so the fans should decide who is an all-star. This has nothing to do with stats, talent etc, it’s all about the fans and who they pick. If the goal was to have the best player play, then they would come up with some kind of BCS type computer ranking to pick the players. I just don’t get why people think that the fans shouldn’t pick the all-stars. Thats the ONLY system that makes sense.

  • tonyknorr

this is beyond ridiculous this in an outrage and a slap in the face to any real basketball fan. If I am seeing this correctly Raymond Felton is not even in the top ten. GREAT ODEN’S RAVEN!!! does anybody else not see the numbers this guy is putting up there are only two two gaurds in the east that are playing at the same level as felton and they are rondo and rose but come on gilbert arenas, brandon Jennings, vince carter, and jamal crawford over FELTON. Good god please put an end to this fan voting crap. about the only postitions that are even close to breaking down properly are the forward spots and even those are screwed

  • Zeiram

Leaving out the Center position in the West (which is slim pickins anyway) I don´t think this is too outrageous.

    Starters right now would be:

East: Garnett, James, Howard, Rondo, Wade

West: Durant, Gasol, Ming, Kobe, Paul.

With the exception of Ming who should be replaced by Dirk (playing Gasol as C, I don´t care, just make it happen), this looks pretty good to me. Amare vs. KG is a debate I would do the rest is solid. There are some slights in the lower voting regions but since these don´t matter I don´t care.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Dirk and Deron, two of the best players in the L, continue to get disrespected. It ain’t right.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

And sure, Yao doesn’t deserve the start, but he isn’t really taking the spot from anyone worthy. So, easy with the outrage.
And I also feel for Kevin Love, also getting disrespected. 30 and 30.

  • T-Money

Yeah, I don’t really get why people get their panties in a bunch for the ASG. It’s an exhibition game – if the people want to see Yao, give them Yao. You want to know who were the best players for a given year? Look at the All-NBA teams.

  • tony knorr

this is ridiculous, this is a slap in the face to all legitimate basketball fans around the world. If I read this correctly Raymond Felton is not even in the top ten for east guards. GREAT ODEN’S RAVEN!!! Gilbert arenas, brandon jennings, VC, and Jamal Crawford are better than Felton? There are only two guards in the east that have actually played as well as Felton and everyone knows that is Rondo and Rose but how Felton is getting this little love is beyone me. In fact the only positions even approaching sanity in their breakdown are the forwards ( and even then Amare should be starting and K love should be right behind Griffin). Please end this Fan voting crap somehow.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Im shocked yi hasnt been voted a starter yet

  • tony knorr

Here is the beef run n’ gun, and t-money. because what people really want is to see the most entertaining and skilled players in the league play a fun game, nobody wants to see derek fisher, chris kaman, and louis scola play in an exhibition game they aren’t going to wow anybody with their playmaking abilities. Hate to say it but the fans are showing that they aren’t objectively intelligent enough to know what they want to see.

  • Mitya

I just gotta say one thing. Blake Griffin HAS to be there. As Mark Jackson would say – come on fans, you’re better than that!

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

Cosign T-Money: “You want to know who were the best players for a given year? Look at the All-NBA teams.” All-Star game is for the fans, so the fan vote is the best/only system that makes sense. It sucks for players like K Love and Felton, but if they keep playing the way they are either the fans will give them start credibility and/or they’ll get recognized on the All-NBA team.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

@tony knorr: If the fans wanted to see Derek Fisher and Chris Kaman, they would vote them in. Fans want to see the stars play and that’s why somebody like Shaq is getting so many votes, regardless how good he is, he’s a star that a lot of people want to see play. T-Money and Run’n'Gun219 are 100% right in that the All-star game is for the fans. If you want to see the best players in the league play against each other then petition Stern to have a end of the season game between the All-NBA teams. Eventhough the All-Star game and All-NBA game would have a lot of overlap, I’d bet the All-star game would have better ratings. And at the end of the day it’s the ratings that make the money and that’s why from an NBA league perspective I think the All-star game makes more sense if you have to have 1 game or the other. Personally I’d watch both, but w/o Shaq my gradmother wouldn’t care about the game between the All-NBA teams.

nice to see another okc fan around here.. and yes if westbrook does not make the all star game im going to sh*t a brick
