Kentucky Beats Ohio St. on Knight Jumper

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

Few teams have as much tournament history as Kentucky, but even Big Blue Nation will have to dig through its memory to find a player having a March like Brandon Knight. The freshman’s jumper with 5 seconds remaining gave the Wildcats a 62-60 win over Ohio State and a second straight appearance in a regional final.

In what was a back-and-forth contest from the opening tip, Jon Diebler tied the game at 60 on a deep 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining. Kentucky then decided not to call a timeout and gave the ball to Knight, who rose over Aaron Craft, one of the Big Ten’s best defenders, and connected on the shot. Ohio State then ran the ball down court and William Buford missed a contested 3-pointer before time expired.

Knight now has two game-winners and a 30-point performance in his three NCAA tournament games. He also broke John Wall’s freshman scoring record for Kentucky during Friday’s game.

But while Knight will get the headlines, the difference-maker on Friday was Josh Harrellson. The senior went toe-to-toe with National Player of the Year candidate Jared Sullinger, tallying 17 points and 10 rebounds. Perhaps more importantly, his defense allowed Kentucky to defend Sullinger one-on-one and lock down on the Buckeyes’ outside shooters.

Sullinger, in what might have been his final collegiate game, gave everyone a performance to remember him by. The freshman phenom finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds. But despite being the nation’s top-ranked team for a large portion of the regular season, Ohio State will bow out before the regional final.

Playing in that game instead will be two of college basketball’s signature programs: Kentucky and North Carolina. The two teams in Chapel Hill on Dec. 4, a game which the Tar Heels won 75-73 behind 27 points from Tyler Zeller.

I guess the one-and-done rule isn’t so bad after all.

After Kentucky knocked off this overrated Ohio State team, this year became the first time since the 2000 tournament that only one number 1 seed made it to the Elite Eight. It has happened only twice since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. By the way, Jared Sullinger is way overrated and has been exposed.

I still can’t believe that was the first time UK had ever beaten Ohio St in the tourney.

    Bracket = Busted

lol most peoples brackets are busted now. I filled 3 out 2 with OSU beating KY and 1 with KY winning since I lived there most my childhood.

sullinger is not overrated, nor is he underrated.. he will not be a all-star in the nba but he will be a decently good player

    There goes my bracket

    @ c_cantrell
co-sign. He’ll be a solid pro. Not quite long enough to play the 4 imo. Great game though, UK had to play near perfect and catch some breaks to beat a great OSU team, and they did. Go Cats!

i can see him being a dejuan blair type player

    Blair is deceivingly athletic.
I’d say he can be more of a Carl Landry.
    Still not bad at all.

Harrellson’s energy last night was some crazy shit.

Overrated freshman are so common. Just ask Harrison Barnes, Brandon Knight, Josh Selby, Kyrie Erving…im just kidding, most of them leading their teams respectively. They’re freshman! And Ohio St., though they always manage to be overrated, but still exceed expectations is beyond me. NOBODY had them #1 overall pre-season. Good luck Sully, you Big Baby clone.

stats dont lie though…slow the game down and Knight is limited. He only put up 9 (clutch shots tho) pts against OSU, and 2 pts against Princeton.

I see Blair as a ferocious rebounder, especially for his size. I can’t see Jared doing it at the next level right now. But he’s staying another year anyway, so he’ll only get better.

Seriously besides the jumper what is so different between Sullinger and Kevin Love? I see a lil Al Jefferson too
