Without Davies, BYU Loses by 18

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

One day after Brandon Davies was dismissed from the team by BYU, the Cougars put their weakened frontcourt to the test against New Mexico. Despite 33 points from Jimmer Fredette, BYU wasn’t competitive in an 82-64 loss.

It’s obvious that the loss of Davies had an even greater effect than first realized. The three starters in the frontcourt for BYU combined for just 12 points and 9 rebounds. As a team the Cougars lost the rebounding edge, 36-25.

Meanwhile, more details have emerged from Davies dismissal. The reason appears to be premarital sex with his girlfriend. He is reportedly crushed by what has happened.

From the Salt Lake Tribune:

According to a source close to the program, Davies was “extremely remorseful, heartbroken,” but has accepted the punishment doled out by the school.

On Wednesday afternoon, the school confirmed that Davies’ dismissal was not due to anything criminal in nature, but would not acknowledge the specific portion of the honor code he violated, per school policy.

Among other things, the honor code forbids students from engaging in premarital sex, and admonishes them to “live a chaste and virtuous life.”

The loss on Wednesday is the third this season for BYU, two of which came against New Mexico. It also might have ended the school’s hopes for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Cougars have one final home game against Wyoming on Saturday to straighten things out before they enter their conference tournament. Chances are Fredette will need to do even more in March for his team to advance to the Final Four.

I thought premarital sex was why athletes play Division 1 sports.

  • Chris Skighwalker

HAHA, so true. If that’s the reason that is terrible.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

WTF!? First off, how did the school even find out? LOL

  • True H

    Seems pretty backwards.

The kid made a mistake, Geez. If he genuinely repents God will forgive him, but not BYU. lol

    BYU > God ?

  • bakers’ dozen (12-13)

he went in and admitted to the administration what he had done. When you sign on to even attend BYU, you sign the honor code. Brandon Davies is no different than any other student there. All students are held to a higher standard because they represent the Church as well as the School…even if they are not members of the LDS faith. It’s sad that Davies’ decision hurt his team, but it’s admirable to see that he takes the honor code seriously enough to admit to what he’s done. It is even more so in today’s society where athletes get free reign to do whatever they want. I applaud Mr. Davies for being honest enough to be a man and come forward. Too bad it will kill BYU’s national title chances, but he’ll come out of this a stronger person in the end.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

How does this make him a stronger person?

  • it is i

remind me never go to BYU

  • it is i

    p.s rondo is a b!tch hahahahahahahahah

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

I will say he did an admirable thing there. But that should be rewarded. If other BYU students have premarital sex, what is their punishment? If he really did tell the admin what he had done, that is honorable in itself. Suspend him a game or have him write a letter of apology to someone. Making him sit out the rest of the season in a sport he excels at and has put years of work into is ridiculous. When a kid gets grounded they get restrictions on TV, hanging out with friends, whatever. They aren’t forced to skip piano practice and concerts.

  • logues

^kids gettting grounded by their parents and violating a school honor code is a ridiculous comparison. but i agree, he should be able to come back, esp after admitting to it, which shows alot of heart

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

they lost because they ain’t that official period.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

who cares about the suspension…What I care about is why in the world is BYU even ranked top 5…..thats a crime!!!!! that violates my personal honor code!!!! lmao

  • bakers’ dozen (12-13)

If a regular student does the same thing, they are usually expelled, depending on the situation. Davies will probably be back next year after an invesigation, etc. From an online chat with Dick Vitale today:
    Joe (Vermont)

Dickie, do you think BYU will still win the MWC tourney? If so where do they end up in the field of 64?

    Dick Vitale (11:14 AM)

I think they can regroup and win the conference tournament, but it won’t be easy. The MWC is one of the toughest conferences in the country. But isn’t it great that a university put rules and regulations and integrity above winning? I think they should be saluted for that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    WACK!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

MWC one of the toughest conferences in the country????? your exempt from speaking about basketball ever again fam…EVER…

The Mt. West has a lot of stacked teams this year…people don’t know cause all they do is Watch UNC and Duke.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

the Davidson squad that played 5-6 ranked major conference squads and got to the Elite Eight was only given a 10 seed….how in the world were we on the fringe of giving these cats a 1 seed…..I’m sorry that just don’t sit right with me

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Antonio Cromarte went to BYU…I’m just sayin..

  • kh

So was he thinking of confessing the whole time? Did he just do “it” once? So many questions. What an interesting story! Hilarious and sad all at the same tiem.

  • Double J

Well I guess this locks up the fact that the best shooter in the country is not getting any

  • Double J

    lol cromartie went to FSU

  • spit hot fiyah

I respect BYU for standing for what they believe, eventhough i find their code of conduct somewhat hypocritical.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

LMFAO!!!!! Antonio Cromartie, BYU?????? it would be a Code Red througout the Brigham Young campus if that dude was even 10 feet from Provo, Utah

  • the truth

i don’t have any respect for anyone for doing this

  • X

Antonio Cromartie went to Florida St. you big dummies….Look it up if you don’t believe me….

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So this kid bragged about having sex (“admitted”) is getting punished for it, and will somehow be a better person? Next time he won’t tell anyone? Or are you trying to say that he isn’t a human being and doesn’t need or want to have sex anymore. What’a crock

  • Emphasis

    @ Double J:
Best shooter? Jimmer is head and shoulders above the rest of the country. He’s the best player in the country without a doubt.

  • Lucas

Black Rick Kamla trollin hard lol. Yes, Rick, outside of the Big East and Big 12, MWC is one of the best conferences THIS YEAR. Try watching something other than an ACC conference game for once. I’d trust Dickie V’s opinion over yours any day.

  • Lucas

That being said, C’MON SON! KEEP IT IN YOUR PANTS FOR A COUPLE MORE WEEKS!!!

  • snasty10

    BYU=lamest college in the country

  • X

University of Delaware is the lamest college on the East Coast…I can attest to that as a Maryland Alum (Fire Gary Williams already!!!!!)

  • JTaylor21

F*ck BYU and mormons. That ish isn’t a real religion, those clowns walk around like they are the holiest people on the planet when in reality they are worse than most people.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    I smell racism by BYU.
    I hope I’m wrong.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    JTaylor21, is that really you?

  • JTaylor21

Philosopher, you damn right that’s me. I’ve ran across a couple of those clowns in my lifetime and trust when I say that the Grand Wizard has nothing on them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Zog

BYU sucks put em in the big 10 they wouldnt get no two conference wins

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    So, what happened?
    What was your experience?

  • X

Cosign Philosopher and JTaylor21…They love Karl Malone b/c he’s an Oreo…From Urbandictionary.com – “I had a black friend drive through Utah, he got pulled over 3 times crossing the state and he never speeds, he said it’s like they radioed his presence when he crossed the border (true story)”

  • izzo

    ugh

  • JTaylor21

Philosopher, it’s just the way they act and treat minorities. It reeks of klanism to me.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    ^Everyone that you’ve met?

  • JTaylor21

    Yes

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

You must have met the wrong ones.

  • JTaylor21

Cool, I can only speak on what I’ve seen.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Most mormoms I’ve met have been cool with me.
But they’re not like die-hard, devout mormons either.

  • http://slamonline.com Eldon Khorshidi

Man this is kind of inconceivable … I would implode if I was Davies… tough situation. Wonder how BYU gets such good recruits that buy into the system. I respect the honor code, but this is something else… a suspension okay, but a dismissal? sheeesh

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Maybe they’ll let him back.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    “Winning”.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Religion is religion guys. I’m shocked, but in reality, I shouldn’t be.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Look, the dude knew the rules when he decided to go there. Call the religion/school rediculous if you want but they have the right to make and enforce the rules as they please.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Their school, their rules. He signed on the dotted line.
For the record, up until 1979 Mormons would let black folks be ministers and they believed we were eternally damned by God, which was the explanation for our skin color.
    Just FYI.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

hey jukai, what’d you think of the fitch/penn fight? do you agree that it was a draw?

  • http://google c_cantrell

wow.. f*ckin wow is all i can say.. this is the most ridiculous sh*t i have heard all f*ckin season.. f*ck byu and f*ck mormons.. f*ckin idiots

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

david: It was either a draw or Fitch. Round 2 coulda gone either way. Honestly, I woulda given round 2 10-10 and said Fitch was the winner, but since calling a round a draw is frowned upon…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    @ Allenp: “Would” or “wouldn’t”? I’m confused.

  • Papa Smurf

    All organized religions are scams.

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

Religious mania describes best what happens there.
What is the name of the BYU team. Let me guess, Basketball Monks.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

yea, sounds about right. i’m more of a boxing guy, and casually watch ufc if im at my friend’s house and he orders a fight, but i thought fitch should’ve won. round 2 was close, as penn controlled the beginning half, while fitch dominated the second half, but round 3 wasn’t even close. fitch should’ve had that.
    what’s a majority draw, anyway?

  • Felix

This has to kill BYU’s shot at being ranked as a top party school… I wonder if the girl has to wear a scarlet A… Jimmer Fredette just told his girlfriend that he’s gay until May 1st… on a related note BYU’s two black players were suspended for admitting they are black…jk

  • Papa Smurf

Charlie Sheen is a BYU grad.

  • Papa Smurf

Felix, if Jimmer said that, he’d probably get kicked out of BYU. Homosexual behavior constitutes a violation of BYU’s almighty Honor Code.

  • Felix

Thats kinda of funny since the whole university is gay… gay as in sucks not gay as in homo

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ Teddy – wouldn’t…Not all Mormons are racist but thier history and much of thier leadership most certainly is.

  • http://dude Chukaz

I hope the Jimmer leaves for the draft and on his press conference tells ppl he’s leaving cuz he wants to get laid. he should then proceed to describe all of his sexual fantasies then he should say this to a female reporter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OBPaenkxdg (go to the 45 second mark)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    wouldn’t

  • Felix

from a basketball standpoint losing this guy kills them. how many contending teams can afford to lose their best front court player? in a one and done tournament format, its a potential deathblow. i can see the kid missing a game or two as being reasonable (not in real life but in their honor code)… they’ve all put too much into this- and it punishes a lot of his teammates for nothing…

  • somedude

    @Wayno sounds like America

@Allenp That made me wonder how that school could possibly hope to sell themselves to black players. Then I looked at their roster.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

@Chukaz – Fredette is a senior. No need to “leave for the draft”. It’s his last year anyways.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

This school should be banned, to me. Can the single coaches and professors have pre sex. I wonder how many are breaking it. To me the school sets themself up in a zero tolerance policy that will hurt BYU in the future. Once you make standards you know people are breaking, you are setting yourself up for a fall.

  • http://360special.blogspot.com dev0

all I have to say is, this is 2011, get real

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Ah okay, gotcha.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Also, I have to say North Americans in general–a lot of them, anyways–especially mainstream Christians (Protestants and Catholics) harbor at least SOME prejudices against Mormons. I’ve seen this a lot.
No offense to Catholics or Protestants, but your religions haven’t exactly been the nicest to people throughout history, even to your own BELIEVERS.
Now, religion is religion and I respect and admire all religions, but cool it on the h@te speech (*cough* c_cantrell).

  • http://www.dingle.com doyouwantmore

The guy stepped forward on his own to tell the school that he was bangin his girlfriend. He didn’t get caught. He did the honorable thing. I say good for the school for having a high standard of morals that is kind of getting lost in our society more and more since the 60′s, but even more good for the kid for stepping forward and being honest.

  • tg

this is ridiculous. its only sex and reeks off the middle ages. for admitting it…the guy is a moron for believing in it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

If you make the choice to go to a wack school, you make the choice to abide by their wack rules. The only shocking thing about this story for me was that minorities lived in Provo, Utah. I seriously had no idea.
