Without Davies, BYU Loses by 18

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

One day after Brandon Davies was dismissed from the team by BYU, the Cougars put their weakened frontcourt to the test against New Mexico. Despite 33 points from Jimmer Fredette, BYU wasn’t competitive in an 82-64 loss.

It’s obvious that the loss of Davies had an even greater effect than first realized. The three starters in the frontcourt for BYU combined for just 12 points and 9 rebounds. As a team the Cougars lost the rebounding edge, 36-25.

Meanwhile, more details have emerged from Davies dismissal. The reason appears to be premarital sex with his girlfriend. He is reportedly crushed by what has happened.

From the Salt Lake Tribune:

According to a source close to the program, Davies was “extremely remorseful, heartbroken,” but has accepted the punishment doled out by the school.

On Wednesday afternoon, the school confirmed that Davies’ dismissal was not due to anything criminal in nature, but would not acknowledge the specific portion of the honor code he violated, per school policy.

Among other things, the honor code forbids students from engaging in premarital sex, and admonishes them to “live a chaste and virtuous life.”

The loss on Wednesday is the third this season for BYU, two of which came against New Mexico. It also might have ended the school’s hopes for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Cougars have one final home game against Wyoming on Saturday to straighten things out before they enter their conference tournament. Chances are Fredette will need to do even more in March for his team to advance to the Final Four.

I thought premarital sex was why athletes play Division 1 sports.

  • Chris Skighwalker

HAHA, so true. If that’s the reason that is terrible.

WTF!? First off, how did the school even find out? LOL

  • True H

    Seems pretty backwards.

The kid made a mistake, Geez. If he genuinely repents God will forgive him, but not BYU. lol

    BYU > God ?

  • bakers’ dozen (12-13)

he went in and admitted to the administration what he had done. When you sign on to even attend BYU, you sign the honor code. Brandon Davies is no different than any other student there. All students are held to a higher standard because they represent the Church as well as the School…even if they are not members of the LDS faith. It’s sad that Davies’ decision hurt his team, but it’s admirable to see that he takes the honor code seriously enough to admit to what he’s done. It is even more so in today’s society where athletes get free reign to do whatever they want. I applaud Mr. Davies for being honest enough to be a man and come forward. Too bad it will kill BYU’s national title chances, but he’ll come out of this a stronger person in the end.

How does this make him a stronger person?

  • it is i

remind me never go to BYU

  • it is i

    p.s rondo is a b!tch hahahahahahahahah

I will say he did an admirable thing there. But that should be rewarded. If other BYU students have premarital sex, what is their punishment? If he really did tell the admin what he had done, that is honorable in itself. Suspend him a game or have him write a letter of apology to someone. Making him sit out the rest of the season in a sport he excels at and has put years of work into is ridiculous. When a kid gets grounded they get restrictions on TV, hanging out with friends, whatever. They aren’t forced to skip piano practice and concerts.

  • logues

^kids gettting grounded by their parents and violating a school honor code is a ridiculous comparison. but i agree, he should be able to come back, esp after admitting to it, which shows alot of heart

they lost because they ain’t that official period.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

who cares about the suspension…What I care about is why in the world is BYU even ranked top 5…..thats a crime!!!!! that violates my personal honor code!!!! lmao

  • bakers’ dozen (12-13)

If a regular student does the same thing, they are usually expelled, depending on the situation. Davies will probably be back next year after an invesigation, etc. From an online chat with Dick Vitale today:
    Joe (Vermont)

Dickie, do you think BYU will still win the MWC tourney? If so where do they end up in the field of 64?

    Dick Vitale (11:14 AM)

I think they can regroup and win the conference tournament, but it won’t be easy. The MWC is one of the toughest conferences in the country. But isn’t it great that a university put rules and regulations and integrity above winning? I think they should be saluted for that.

    WACK!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

the Davidson squad that played 5-6 ranked major conference squads and got to the Elite Eight was only given a 10 seed….how in the world were we on the fringe of giving these cats a 1 seed…..I’m sorry that just don’t sit right with me

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Antonio Cromarte went to BYU…I’m just sayin..

  • kh

So was he thinking of confessing the whole time? Did he just do “it” once? So many questions. What an interesting story! Hilarious and sad all at the same tiem.

  • Double J

Well I guess this locks up the fact that the best shooter in the country is not getting any

  • Double J

    lol cromartie went to FSU

  • spit hot fiyah

I respect BYU for standing for what they believe, eventhough i find their code of conduct somewhat hypocritical.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

LMFAO!!!!! Antonio Cromartie, BYU?????? it would be a Code Red througout the Brigham Young campus if that dude was even 10 feet from Provo, Utah

  • the truth

i don’t have any respect for anyone for doing this

  • X

Antonio Cromartie went to Florida St. you big dummies….Look it up if you don’t believe me….

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So this kid bragged about having sex (“admitted”) is getting punished for it, and will somehow be a better person? Next time he won’t tell anyone? Or are you trying to say that he isn’t a human being and doesn’t need or want to have sex anymore. What’a crock

  • Emphasis

    @ Double J:
Best shooter? Jimmer is head and shoulders above the rest of the country. He’s the best player in the country without a doubt.

  • Lucas

Black Rick Kamla trollin hard lol. Yes, Rick, outside of the Big East and Big 12, MWC is one of the best conferences THIS YEAR. Try watching something other than an ACC conference game for once. I’d trust Dickie V’s opinion over yours any day.

  • Lucas

That being said, C’MON SON! KEEP IT IN YOUR PANTS FOR A COUPLE MORE WEEKS!!!

  • snasty10

    BYU=lamest college in the country

  • X

University of Delaware is the lamest college on the East Coast…I can attest to that as a Maryland Alum (Fire Gary Williams already!!!!!)

  • JTaylor21

F*ck BYU and mormons. That ish isn’t a real religion, those clowns walk around like they are the holiest people on the planet when in reality they are worse than most people.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    I smell racism by BYU.
    I hope I’m wrong.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    JTaylor21, is that really you?

  • JTaylor21

Philosopher, you damn right that’s me. I’ve ran across a couple of those clowns in my lifetime and trust when I say that the Grand Wizard has nothing on them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Zog

BYU sucks put em in the big 10 they wouldnt get no two conference wins

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    So, what happened?
    What was your experience?

  • X

Cosign Philosopher and JTaylor21…They love Karl Malone b/c he’s an Oreo…From Urbandictionary.com – “I had a black friend drive through Utah, he got pulled over 3 times crossing the state and he never speeds, he said it’s like they radioed his presence when he crossed the border (true story)”

  • izzo

    ugh

  • JTaylor21

Philosopher, it’s just the way they act and treat minorities. It reeks of klanism to me.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    ^Everyone that you’ve met?

  • JTaylor21

    Yes

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

You must have met the wrong ones.

  • JTaylor21

Cool, I can only speak on what I’ve seen.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Most mormoms I’ve met have been cool with me.
But they’re not like die-hard, devout mormons either.

  • http://slamonline.com Eldon Khorshidi

Man this is kind of inconceivable … I would implode if I was Davies… tough situation. Wonder how BYU gets such good recruits that buy into the system. I respect the honor code, but this is something else… a suspension okay, but a dismissal? sheeesh
