Josh Smith Has Upset the Miami Heat

by Marcel Mutoni

Last night’s Hawks/Heat game reminded many of the late 80s/mid 90s postseason wars, with its flagrant fouls, falls, injuries and sheer physicality.

The only difference between then and now, I suppose, is having someone crazy enough to attempt a between the legs windmill dunk late in the fourth quarter with the outcome no longer in question — and missing it to boot.

Welcome to the world of one Josh Smith, whose antics have given the Miami Heat plenty of added motivation going into Game 6.

More from the AP and Sun-Sentinel:

“They came in here and did what they had to do,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “They kicked our butts in pretty much every way possible that you could in a basketball game and there at the end it turned into a highlight show, pickup game, highlight reel, really trying to embarrass us.”

“We were very insulted by it,” Dwyane Wade said.

Coach Spoelstra added that it’d be fitting if this series went the distance, and I’d like to think that most people agree.

Game 6 is on Saturday night in Miami.

Well, whatever it takes to ramp up the intensity, huh? This should be good.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Yeah, it should. Hawks by 17 in game 6.

Whatever……the only play I had issue with was the bullsh*t flagrant they called on Wade when he just missed blocking Mo’s weak dunk. Take this for what it is…..The Hawks killed the Heat in quarter 2……then the Heat outscored the Hawks in the second half by eight and Beasley and Wade finally got something going…..which should be confidence building….plus Al will probably be out. Game 6 will not be nice for Team ATL and Sunday afternoon should be classic.

I really can’t see the heat winning this. I don’t know why, exactly. JR Smith should’ve had a crack at a dunk like that in game four. That’s the time and place for that kinda stuff*.

    * By that I mean, between the legs dunk? In the playoffs? Full credit to smoove, wish he hadda nailed it…

    I like… when… Eboy uses… ellipses…

    They’re cooler than commas.

    Harlem Globetrotters tryout?

  • riggs

    im glad his dumb*ss missed.

  • neaorin

My reaction to this is exactly the same as to the Celtics being bothered by the Cavs’ dancing: if you REALLY need the extra “motivation” you get from witnessing this kind of stuff, you’ve got bigger issues already.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

    ^well, duh… (Ellipses, I’m cool like that…)

    Oh who gives a sh*t.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

shame on josh, not for doing tricks late in a blowout, but for missing it! you try some fancy sh!t, you better pull it off! i really don’t care about the heat feeling disrespected. the heat fans should feel disrespected by their effort last night. suck it up, this is pro sports. if you don’t like a guy showboating then do something about it.

same thing with the cavs and their pre-game picture snapping routine. they got their as-es handed to them by the magic late in the reg season and it stopped.

  • etaboliserum

since when is an athlete trying to entertain his home crowd considered showing off? isnt that their jobs? if he wouldve made it wuda been on sportscenter.

  • no id

Well he should be allowed to miss one dunk after having his own personal dunk contest this series.

  • lakers4life

i still like josh smith.full of potential.but very slow growth.

  • Tom

i wish he wouldv made it, it wouldv been so awesome to see someone do that in the playoffs

Man, I was watching and that isht was just for the crowd. I don’t think it5 was meant to show up the Heat. The fans were all standing and cheering as soon as Josh got the ball in the ope floor, he just never picked up enough speed. I was surprised he tried to go between his legs and not just Lebron it (jump as high as you can and dunk the ball as hard as you can)

    oh drama

  • Tavoris

Miami, take a number. You aren’t the first person Josh Smith has pissed off this season.

  • Tavoris

The Hawks have been HURTING for some excitement for years…

grrr, this is so stupid, nba in an entertainment so he just did what he’s supposed to do it… People cry too much, if you don’t like it, show to him e win the game… everybody like to see something like that (ok he couldn’t have missed lol), but i think he should try it again next game.

I can’t understand why the Heat feels disrespected. He was trying to entertain people and showcase his amazing athleticism. The Heat are nervous because they know they can’t win this series

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Seriously, who cares? If this is all the Heat can look to for motivation, that’s sad. They need to look at the obvious and realize: D*mn, we’re losing to the Hawks!” and get it together.

I loved the announcer’s reaction to the missed dunk. I’m not sure who it was, it sounded like either Hubie Brown or the Czar, but he said something like, “He just doesn’t get it.” And he is pretty immature sometimes. But I don’t see anything wrong with the dunk. Sure it was unncessary, but you’re at home, the crowd is into it, go ahead. I was more pissed that he missed the dunk.

    Jermaine O’Neal drops 50.

  • Exec Eaze

What the f ever mayne, if j smooth nailed that all the comments on this board would be straight pole jocking…. besides its not like he got block while tryna pull a 360 with game on the line… just saying (oh and the ellipses thing…. im not mad at that at all)

  • K-Nasty

Wade should be more insulted about letting Atlanta’s 3 guards combine for 65 points.

He should’ve pulled up and shot a three and followed his shot (cause you know he’s gonna miss) with a dunk.

  • chazz michael michaels

pshh b.s. the nuggets/hornets series was the most physical series so far not the hawks and the heat dumb!!!!!!!!

  • Josh D

Man that would be amazing if he pulled it off

  • S. Trotter

Well, it was in bad taste. It certianly wasn’t the worst thing I’ve seen, but its just bad form. Any of you who played, know its bad form and that is all it is. Its something silly a child would do, without thinking about the situation and reaction it might cause, thats all.

Josh Smith Still The BEst If You Go On Yahoo Its Gonna Say He Was To High So Please Give This MAn His Props and Plus He Got Off The Wrong Foot

  • Sarah

That was a REALLY dumb move. He may actually be lucky he missed it. Maybe he’ll realize it wasn’t the best idea. I didn’t really appreciate how Dampier dunked on the Spurs with about 26 seconds left in their season. I know they technically may have had to put up a shot, but they still could have dribbled it out. Whatever, it doesn’t matter. People do need to learn how to win with a little class and dignity. Just shows they haven’t been there too often (as far as winning in the postseason).

  • Sarah

I think it would’ve been okay if Josh just did some simple, monster dunk at that point. You don’t really do a lot of between-the-legs dunks in the playoffs.

  • ab_40

sarah… damp was in the finals..

I wish josh smith would’ve made that dunk. because THAT would be embarrasing not missing it and continuing the rout. ah well

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Wade’s just jealous because he knows he can’t pull off an east bay funk dunk. (going with the original title)

  • Sarah

All the more reason he should know better. He just seems to be thick-headed, though. But he never won anything that really matters is my point. It’s not like they go deep into the postseason pretty much every year. The past two years they went out in the first round.

I don’t get how it was disrespectful to Miami.. Can someone please explain that to me?
