Van Gundy Asks DiLeo to Stop Lobbying for Calls

Clearly, Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy did not get the memo this postseason: Following each and every loss, NBA coaches are mandated to lobby for calls through the media.

Everyone’s doing it, except for SVG it seems, and this upsets him greatly. Last night, he asked his opponent, Tony DiLeo, to cut it out.

The AP has the quotes, and the Orlando Sentinel has video of SVG’s contentious presser:

“Dwight Howard had a great game, and he’s a great player, but he just lives in the 3-second lane on offense and defense,” DiLeo said. “I’m just saying he’s standing in the 3-second lane on offense and defense. He’s a great player, and he doesn’t need any advantages.”

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy heard DiLeo’s remarks, took the podium and defended his star center by taking a shot at DiLeo.

“Am I supposed to come up here and talk about the game. Or am I supposed to come up here and lobby for the calls I want the next game?” Van Gundy said. “Is that what it’s about now? We’re supposed to lobby for the calls we want the next game? Let’s just play the games…I guess that’s the only reason Dwight’s having success in this series. It has nothing to do with the fact that he’s good.”

Ah, the sweet joys of tossing verbal grenades at your Playoff foes. Gotta love it.

    I agree with Van Gundy. All coaches do now is complain about the calls in the post game interviews so they get the calls the next game. It worked for the Celtics in game 5.

    pretty sure SVG was saying other people should stop whining about calls. You guys would call an illegal screen in a pickup game. Bring back the rough and tumble.

    Um, so let me get this straight. Van Gundy’s whining about DiLeo perceived whining for calls? Ok, it’s not like Van Gundy’s ever whined about calls, right? What I want to know is why SVG isn’t demanding Dwight get 25+ shots every game. Maybe he should be lobbying for his own team to get Dwight the ball more.

    Tony DiLeo is just a complete fricken idiot.Shouldnt even be coaching in the WNBA let alone the NBA.Look at every timeout,just gets his assistants to do all the talking while he sits there and nods his head.How about ACTUALLY coaching instead of coming out and criticising Dwight.Stop acting like Flip in Sota and coach the damn game idiot.

    Van Gundy is tight. Im glad he says what he says. Even though the Magic won, he did’nt complain about the numerous bad calls that occured.

    everytime iggy drives they call some ish like when he ran over Lewis but you never hear SVG complain. ya’ll lil kids let the media and Shaq eat you minds. Think about it everytime you hear SVG he’s complaining about his own team and how they didnt perform well, you never hear him gripping about another team. He went at Shaq for flopping and thats it he’s usually just focused on his team and what they didnt do. Dint fool urselves in to thinking what some people have just invented

    Co-sign Eboy on this one. JVG is better than SVG and JVG isn’t that good either. Since when did they both get this royalty pass by the league and fraternity where they expect all this respect? OK JVG went to finals but SVG? GTFOH with that bullsh*t. He’s TERRIBLE.

    I love it when people focus on the messenger instead of the message. If you’re right, you don’t need credentials to talk. SVG’s correct. He and his brother are often correct. We are lucky enough to be within earshot of their candor. To take a page from his book, “Is this what it’s about now? Is every coach supposed to be a disingenuous egomaniac who spits unreality 24-7, like Phil Jackson?”
