Little Mind Games: Carlisle vs Karl

by Marcel Mutoni

The Playoffs are as much about what happens between the lines, as they are about what’s taking place between the ears. The physical battle must be waged alongside the mental one. And NBA coaches understand this better than just about anyone else.

Which is why it’s fascinating to observe the little warfare taking place between Rick Carlisle and George Karl following Game 1 of the Nuggets/Mavs series.

Carlisle was upset with the treatment his star forward, Dirk Nowitzki, received from the refs, and when he got wind of this, Karl was more than happy to prove to Rick just how wrong he is in thinking this. Reports from the Star-Telegram and Denver Post:

The Nuggets said they didn’t feel the officiating played a role in Game 1, even though Nowitzki shot only five free throws, one of which was after a technical foul. “Tell Rick I’ll send the film in on Nowitzki,” Denver coach George Karl said. “I think we did a hell of a job not fouling him. We might have fouled him off the ball. We might have fouled him before he caught the ball. We might have fouled him in fronting him, in battling him, but I don’t think we fouled him when he shot.”

Carlisle’s response? “That’s very accommodating of him.”One day after Carlisle griped about the officiating, he backpedaled. “I’m not going to talk about the officiating,” Carlisle said before practice at the Pepsi Center on Monday. “The officials didn’t lose the game for us. We lost the game because we turned it over and weren’t tough enough. Denver had a lot to do with that.”

Regardless of the video evidence that George Karl may possess, I’m willing to bet that Dirk will get more calls tonight as the desperate Mavs try and even up the series before it heads to Dallas.

don’t try to bullsh*t a bullsh*tter, Rick. won’t work. Karl’s gonna be Karl, deal with it. Might be good if you could wake Barea and JT up too. Tell em it’s the playoffs, especially JT

Desperate? They lost one game? And Dirk got roughed up that game down on the block. There’s no excuse for the lack of calls when you’re calling touch fouls against whoever is guarding Nene.

    Dirk is gay

If you catch the ball in the paint, and you shoot a turn around fall away jumper, you dont deserve to get calls.

  • phil

Clearly when Martin and Nene were shoving him out of bounds it was because he was falling away.

  • Bear

no way Dallas will win this series, especially if the Nuggets bench keeps playing like they did in Game 1.

    LOL @ Yann
Dirk’s a softie. this is the playoffs brooo. stop whining and play some ball. Melo had 3 first half fouls and played like 7 first half minutes and we still whooped u

Dirk needs to drink some Powerade. The OFFICIAL drink of the playoff.

  • http://www.jcherot.blogspot.com Tripset30

It’s one game. It’s a long series. How many times is Nene going to get off like he did in the first half against the Mavs?

It’s crazy how much criticism Dirk gets and nobody goes at Carmelo, who until he got past the first round this year was the T-Mac II.

Still a long way from being over, folks…

  • http://slamonline.com DONONE

NUGGETS ALL THE WAY SON! THE MAVS AINT NOTHIN BOY! ERICKA BETTER NOT EVEN SAY ANYTHING THIS SERIES BEFORE HE GETS K.O.”D BY THA BIRDMAN! HAHAHAA NUGGS IN 5 TOPS 6

If the refs would call half the fouls against whoever is guarding Nene and Melo, this series would be way over. Dirk is good, but superstar calls need to go the way of the dodo or the blue footed boobie.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Dirk also is bound to fold. It is the playoffs, afterall.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Uhhh, why do people compare Melo to T-Mac? A healthy T-Mac will always be better than Carmelo Anthony.

  • clapzilla

@Tripset, A Few Months Ago You Could Only Find Like 2 People In Here That Said Good Things About Melo. Nene’s Gonna Keep Going Off Because Once He’s Established He’ll Keep Producing. Plus Dampier Is Too Slow For Him Anyways.

  • clapzilla

A Healthy T-Mac Couldn’t Finish Off The Mavs In The Playoffs After Winning The 1st 2 Games In Dallas! Not Even Garnett’s Run Was As Pathetic As McGrady’s Run Is.

  • Tavoris

Teddy, I don’t know about that one…Melo is much more dangerous as a scorer (even if T-Mac is more electrifying). I’d say that they are pretty even (if u take T-Mac in his prime).

  • bk

Dirks going for at least 35 tonight and my bet is that nene doesnt even get 10.

  • phil

Apparently clapzilla thinks every word is a proper noun.

  • http://jakeandamir.com tealish

I didn’t read the comments because I’m sure they consisted of solely “Dirk is soft” and David West references. Truth be told, if you watched Game 1 you’d know the Mavs as a team played weak but Dirk was also getting NO calls. He is perhaps one of the least respected superstars ever.
During the game, they also showed a graphic that had Dirk as being 1 of only 5 players in HISTORY to average 25 and 10 in the playoffs. Damn, what a soft Euro. Step up and ball when it matters.

  • Will Ram

George Karl always has to have the last say. He’ll make a mountain out of a molehill. I still hold him responsible for the Knicks/Nuggets brawl in 2006.

He had to run up the score to prove he felt Isiah did his bosom buddy Larry Brown wrong. What a clown this guy is, from personal rifts with players like Gary Payton and Carmelo to thinking he’s God’s gift to basketball.

Last time I checked, the only ring on his fingers was a wedding ring.

  • Mavs thru thick and thin

desperate? ….wow talk about jumping to conclusions. it’s one game people, just in case you forgot, you have to win four to win the series…they still have a LONG way to go.
the mavs tie it up tonight. mavs in 6.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

If a man is ‘the least respected’, does that still make him a superstar…(in the forest…?)
I think Dirk is awesome… He will get more calls… but he needs to not pump fake excessively, just go up strong…shoot more threes start outside/in.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

@Teddy: the only thing comparable about the two was the fact that they both failed to get out of the first round and now that comparison is gone. in 6 years Melo has already been more successful than T-mac, deal with it

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHH!
freaking stupid turnover prone Mavs…. Jason Kidd bricking every shot in sight.. without Josh this team STINKS! Dirk is doing his thing, but he’s played ALL of Denver’s frontcourt today and still scored 35 so far, but dude is done…dunzo…tired! Freaking stupid limited bench…ARRRRGHHHH… Rick starts the fourth with neither Jet or Dirk on the court… WTEFFIIN..F? stupid Jet is playing scared…. Dampier is rubbish…i am so angry, i think my hair just started graying.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

ASON Kidd is KILLING me…. stop shooting you dolt, get your scorers good passes.. punka**! i read somewhere on slamonline that he makes the wideopen three’s? yeah, in his dreams maybe!!! Gtfoh!!!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

4 Points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 turnovers, and 1-6 from the field (that would include the 1-5 from 3, most of them obvious bricks upon release, in the 4th). I do love it when a lame duck with bad shooting mechanics decides to stop doing what he does best (limiting Chauncey, setting guys up for easy shots, the occasional fastbreak entry pass) and starts trying to take over. Very clever Ason. To Hades with this, get rid of him as soon as the season ends. you MESSED up bad on that trade, Cubes… With Josh out, the Mavs are basically playing 1 on 3 on offense. Dirk versus Melo-Nene-JR. If you add the bad percentages and obvious discomfort so far of two others (JET & Billups), the Mavs are playing two on four. Game over if Josh can’t fight through the pain.

  • The Choker

This just in Nuggets beat the mavs again. I smell a short series. Go Nuggs!

  • SB

LOL at the idiot who said a healthy T-Mac is better then Melo. T-Mac is the worst player to ever lead the NBA in scoring. He doesn’t even relish being “the guy” on his team. He’s a joke of a superstar.

  • http://myspace.com/2grownup2beshownup Jack

Teddy-The-Bear: No. That’s all I gotta say about that. Clapzilla: If you’re lucky enough to own a computer, you must also be to get a friggin’ eductaion, your typing drives me insane. Newsflash: Not all letters start with a capital letter. Weird, huh?

  • http://myspace.com/2grownup2beshownup Jack

^^Comments, not letters. Jordan Farmar text messages? Hahaha!

  • Ryan

Hmm, I just heard someone say they bet Nene doesn’t even get 10 tonight. Really? How about 25 and 8? Face it bk, Dampier CANNOT keep up with Nene. Nor can Hollins or Bass. The Mavs have absolutely NO answer for him. Dirk is a great player, and he’ll always get his, but stop whining about the fouls. You don’t get calls for jump shots. Funny that Dirk has scored 28 or more in every game against the Nuggets this season, yet the Mavs still have yet to win even one game. I’d be more than a little frustrated if I were Dirk. Man, some of his shots tonight were incredible.

  • bk

Ha alright Ill face it. I was almost right Dirk got his 35 but Nene had a great game. And yeah I finally realized how worthless Dampier is after he blew that wide open lay-up after that great pass from Kidd. And I also realized how much the Mavs would like to have Devin Harris back since they only have two guys that can score.
