Mark Cuban vs. Kenyon Martin’s Mom

by Marcel Mutoni

The scene following the Dallas Mavericks’ heart-breaking loss to the Denver Nuggets in Game Three was chaotic. Put simply, the Mavs lost their minds.

Josh Howard had to be held back by teammates from going after the refs (he also took his anger out on a photographer), and team owner Mark Cuban also took issue with a camera man (check it out here).

Though he played nice with the press after the game, Cuban did not hold his tongue when he spotted Kenyon Martin’s mom in the stands. Let’s just say he didn’t wish her a happy Mother’s Day.

The Denver Post reports:

During the postgame chaos after Saturday’s Nuggets-Mavericks game, Dallas owner Mark Cuban had a brief but heated confrontation with Lydia Moore, the mother of Denver’s Kenyon Martin, who was seated near the tunnel that leads to the Mavs’ locker room.

Cuban said Sunday by e-mail that when he walked off the court, a fan was screaming about the Nuggets being “thugs,” so Cuban said to Martin’s mother: “That includes your son.”

According to Martin’s agent, Brian Dyke, Cuban spotted Moore amid numerous Nuggets fans and said, unprovoked, “Your son is a punk.” Regardless of what insult was stated, NBA spokesman Tim Frank said, “The situation on the floor postgame is being reviewed.” Cuban said by e-mail he knew Martin’s mother, because after a previous game that Denver won, she had approached him and made trash-talk-type comments.

There’s no question that the Mavs were screwed by the officiating in Game 3, but their actions thereafter make it a little hard to feel too sorry for them.

IF this is true, Cubes is a damn fool. Get a hold of yourself, man!

  • Jukai Posted: May.11 at 10:04 am
No, I still feel sorry for them. How are they worse than the Nuggets?

  • Ken Posted: May.11 at 10:09 am
At least it wasn’t on Mother’s day.

  • R3Z Posted: May.11 at 10:11 am
All is fair in Love, War and Basketball!!!

  • chiqo Posted: May.11 at 10:13 am
talk about a sore loser, sheesh.

  • Darksaber Posted: May.11 at 10:13 am
well not quite ALL. But that’s just my opinion.

  • Fred34 Posted: May.11 at 10:14 am
who’s debating Kmart being a punk? surely not his mom – she would be the first to concur – she’s known for years that he’s a punk…

  • rikson Posted: May.11 at 10:18 am
“Cuban said by e-mail he knew Martin’s mother, because after a previous game that Denver won, she had approached him and made trash-talk-type comments.” -> Bad winner meets a bad looser….

  • ole dirty marmot Posted: May.11 at 10:28 am
Bet he doesn’t pull that with Ann ‘Cru Thik’Iverson.Thug moms stand up!(yesterday)…

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.11 at 10:42 am
    You stay classy, Mark Cuban.

  • mj23 Posted: May.11 at 10:44 am
    Kmart is a fugazy

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: May.11 at 10:44 am
the mavs were in no way screwed by the refs. dude made minimal contact they stepped back and put his hands up as all players do when they show they didnt foul. if youre the mavs, you have to wrap up melo, you cant let him get the shot off. ALSO, HOW DID HORRY GET 2 GAMES FOR A LIGHT HIPCHECK OF NASH, BUT FISHER ONLY GOT 1?? THAT WAS SOME OF THE DIRTIEST IVE SEEN IN A WHILE.

  • ber Posted: May.11 at 10:45 am
You’re down 3-0. Do you really want to start something with K-Mart’s mom? He’s just going to come out and show your team up.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: May.11 at 10:59 am
Co-sign Tarzan: this is wayy over blown. just apreciate the shot

  • Hursty Posted: May.11 at 11:01 am
Nash was the point guard getting hit Tarzan. Fisher was the one creating the contact. Different circumstances too. Fisher knew a pick was coming, while Nash got hip-checked into the scorer’s table… I’m sure someone else will be happy to explain the intracies(sp?) of it to you though.

  • Jukai Posted: May.11 at 11:07 am
Tarzan always loves to play the local idiot. Did it ever occur to you that he was raising his hands to SHOW THAT THE FOUL WAS ON HIM? LIKE THEY DO IN EVERY PLAY IN THE NBA? F*ck man…

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_ Posted: May.11 at 11:10 am
Dude, I know KMarts mom…she is about 5’5″ and wiry. She’d kick Cubes Pubes all over the court! She’s very nice, but she’s hardcore! Also, Cuban wouldn’t dare say that to KMarts face, or even talk to his mom if KMart were there. Who’s the punk now?

  • riggs Posted: May.11 at 11:14 am
haha dirk is gonna get f*cked up, you mess with his moms cubes he’ll mess with your illegitimate son.

  • riggs Posted: May.11 at 11:19 am
@Jukai: they only put one hand up to show they fouled, he put his hands up (bent with shoulder shrugged) as if to say he didnt commit the fouled “LIKE THEY DO IN EVERY PLAY IN THE NBA”

  • riggs Posted: May.11 at 11:19 am
    foul*

  • Superman Osman Posted: May.11 at 11:20 am
Cuban is a f*ckin loser. Get the Mavs back to smoking and drinking. They will play better when their too drunk to hear him whine and publicly announcing his man love to Shaq via twitter.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: May.11 at 11:21 am
    1. Cubes is all class. 2. If Wright wanted the foul called, he shouldn’t have quit and put up his arms. That’s saying “I didn’t touch him,” and the refs believed him.

  • Jukai Posted: May.11 at 11:22 am
Riggs: Too poor to afford league pass? I’ve seen plenty of guys rasie both hands up to show that they fouled someone. It’s usually also to show that they’re “in control” and not looking to get tangled up in a fight. I’m sure the dude was worried about either getting in a fight or getting a T if he just wrapped his arms around Melo. The foul DEFINITELY could have been harder, no doubt about that, but damn, the referees have to look for that. All replays show a CLEAR FOUL that was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to miss. They had called what, 80-something fouls before that… something just isn’t right there.

  • Jukai Posted: May.11 at 11:24 am
It ISN’T saying I didn’t touch him, Mo. How many times have I seen a player throw a dude down on the ground then raise both hands up to say, “that’s me, I fouled him, wasn’t malicious”
Watch more than a few damn games.
I can’t believe people are sticking up at the league for this. This is probably top-5 worst blown calls of all time.

  • Czar Ruke Posted: May.11 at 11:39 am
Mike Golic says he put his arms up to say he didn’t foul him. So there.

  • riggs Posted: May.11 at 11:46 am
lol @ too poor to afford league pass, thats why u lose all of your arguments, you throw in lil kiddie cheapshots that just makes you end up looking stupid. Its not only me and almost everyone else on here that said it but actual nba analyst and people who know more about the game than both you and i combined, who said why the hell did he throw his hands up, so dont give me that BS kid.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: May.11 at 11:46 am
@ Jukai: u can’t be serious. i mean, there is a clear difference between a players reaction and body longuage when he’s trying to CLAIM a foul and when he is trying to AVOID a foul. Its pretty obvious that wright was doing the latter and quickly changed his mind when the shot dropped. was there contact? definetly. but don’t just give up on a play before the whistle blows, especially when your fighting for your lives.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: May.11 at 11:59 am
i dont know why dude would try to say a foul was on him, with one or two hands, when there was no whistle. he forgot the important part of late game fouling, the part of actually committing a very obvious foul

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: May.11 at 12:03 pm
k-mart #4, i cant say no to free finals tickets. hursty, watch the nash/horry foul again, horry barely moved into nash, which is a foul, but steve megaflopped to the ground. fisher looked back for scola and measured him up with a shoulder and elbow, that should have been a 2-3 game suspension.

  • phil Posted: May.11 at 12:03 pm
God you nuggets fans are stupid and pathetic, just deal with the fact that the only reason your team one this game was help from the refs and move on. I don’t see what you have to gain by arguing this.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: May.11 at 12:17 pm
we have pride to gain. and u Mavs fans are pathetic to try and take away from the Nuggets victory. when it all comes down to it U LOST. deal with it and move on. I don’t see what u have to gain by arguing this

  • Phil B Posted: May.11 at 12:19 pm
i’m really getting sick of cuban. what a douche. yes, it was a blown call, but wright should have wrapped him up. i’m not losing sleep because i think the nuggets are ten times better than the mavs and i really dislike the mavs too… which might have to do more with cuban than anything else.

  • JB Posted: May.11 at 12:22 pm
Raise his hands to show he committed a foul?!? Both hands?!
In class, did you ever get the teachers attention by raising both? and 99% of the time I see an NBA player raise A hand, its AFTER the whistle was blown. If his intent was to foul, he should have done a better job.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: May.11 at 12:30 pm
    LOL JB is on point

  • underdog Posted: May.11 at 12:37 pm
    I feel bad for Dirk.

  • Jukai Posted: May.11 at 12:39 pm
Riggs: Analysts are also saying it’s the worst blown call in their recent memories. The league claims it too. I hear a lot of “dude, you have to foul him HARD” but no one is saying “oh it’s his fault for putting his hands up like that.” This is 100% the refs fault and the league should be embarrassed, as they are. You also didn’t deny being too poor to afford league pass.
MeloMan13: What is the logical reason for Wright to try and avoid a foul? He was told by his coach to foul Carmello. He did, then put his hands up saying, “I fouled him, no additional contact needed.” Yes, Wright did have that stupid “durrr wasn’t me” expression on his face, but Wright ALWAYS has that expression on his face. Dude doesn’t look too “there.” That being said, I’m torn on the “keep playing until you hear the whistle” thing. You gotta be in tune with the game, you’re a pro and you gotta realize what’s happening. Wright probably should have wrapped Carmello up. Even still, a lot of on-court scuffles happen because a player “continues” to play because he didn’t hear the whistle on the play. I don’t think that’s the greatest advice to go by.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: May.11 at 12:48 pm
We all know that he was tryna . the point is he didnt do a good job at all. his post “foul” reaction didn’t help him at all. and I’ve watched alot. alot of nba games, and never have i seen someone put both hands in the air to admit a foul.
Sure, the refs didnt help them but the Mavs lost this game on their own and only have themselves to blame

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.11 at 1:01 pm
The way things have been called all playoffs long, if you foul him harder, maybe they call a flagrant, you get ejected, and Denver gets two shots and the ball. The officiating has been horrible, and the NBA should be embarassed. That said, Wright shouldn’t have just stepped away.

  • Drew Posted: May.11 at 1:07 pm
I am a Nuggets fan, and it was a foul. It should have been called. But that just means that Denver would have taken the ball out, and Melo would have had a chance to make a shot. The call was no worse than the incredibly-bad foul called on the Nuggets two plays earlier when the players were on the floor and it was clearly a jump-ball. Mavs fans need to face facts: your team choked.

  • JB Posted: May.11 at 1:31 pm
Russ, no one is saying that he should have Derek Fishered the guy, but if you wrap him up (going for the ball obviously) you hinder your ability to put your hands up as if to say you didn’t foul the guy. I do concede that, for as many damn fouls were called in the game, they didn’t call that one? That is sad. All I’m saying is the guy could have done a better job from the foul to selling it.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.11 at 1:43 pm
It’s easy to say that after the fact. I was just amazed that, after a game where they called EVERYTHING (61 foul calls), they miss an INTENTIONAL foul that everyone should have seen coming. He shouldn’t have had to sell it. But props to Melo for hitting the shot.

  • nuggettfannn Posted: May.11 at 1:46 pm
watch k-mart kill mark cuban today

  • nuggettfannn Posted: May.11 at 1:47 pm

  • JB Posted: May.11 at 2:05 pm
Valid point Russ, no denying that…just hilarious that Refs cannot even be consistent in one game. A game that Violet Palmer wasn’t even featured in.

  • Jukai Posted: May.11 at 2:08 pm
    Word, Russ.

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_ Posted: May.11 at 2:12 pm
I think Kidd had it right when he said that the NBA has a history of swallowing whistles in the final moments of games to let the players decide the outcome.

  • Bro D. Posted: May.11 at 2:39 pm
Wow, Cuban’s turning into Jackie Moon, “I will burn your house down!”

  • Texas Posted: May.11 at 2:56 pm
Wtf players ALLWAYS raise their hands up to act like they didnt commit a foul. The Mavs player chocked. Ridiculous.
Nuggets playing hard. Mavs chocking. =
    Nuggets 3 Mavs 0.
Cuban is a punk craving attention. I mean Cuban is STILL a punk craving attention.

  • BETCATS Posted: May.11 at 3:29 pm
to quote a song from 8 Crazy Nights: “That’s a technical foul /and possibly a homicide” Seriously Cubes, you are going to talk junk about a man who is 3x bigger than you and you accuse of being a violent thug? You trash talk to his mother? Do you really expect getting a person you allege to be a ‘big bully’ who is on a team that is better than yours and is in tiptop physical condition very angry a good idea?

  • Cheryl Posted: May.11 at 5:08 pm
I really hope the league bans Cuban from this game. That’s ridiculous for the owner of a team to be that stupid. Fines don’t work on this pr!ck, banning him from the arena seems to me to be the only way to try and diffuse this stupidity.

  • nn Posted: May.11 at 5:41 pm
The ref did a great job. As usual the league offices are clueless pencil pushers. Wright should have fouled Anthony when he fumbled the ball. There would have been no chance for Melo to shoot, and Wright might even have been able to get possesion or a jump-ball– plus when you’ve got a foul to give don’t wait for the player to get close to the three point line. It was a bad play by Wright, and a great shot by Melo. The refs thankfully weren’t a aprt of it.

  • nn Posted: May.11 at 5:51 pm
And… there is no risk of getting a flagrant called on you if you just wrap a guy up with your arms. No one is saying Wright should have fouled harder as in inflict pain, just wrap him up, as in make sure every one knows you’re fouling but don’t want the guy to get hurt, as in it happens all the time under the rim, and it is seen as thoughtful, and would never be called a flegrant!!!! Clearly Wright was thrown off his game plan when Melo fumbled the ball, I don’t think he even knew weather he was fouling, trying to take a charge, force Melo out of bounds, or avoid fouling in the act of shooting– clearly Wright was confussed, and good job by the refs of not bailing him out!!

  • Conative77 Posted: May.11 at 6:59 pm
What is wrong with you people!! Just becuase the Mavs lost a game that had a “questionable call” its ok to physically abuse someone?? Yes the REAL punk here is Cuban pushing the camera man and then verbally attacking a female!! There is some high quality class!! Guess millions cant buy you a brain!!! Dumbas!
And to Phil the only one that is pathetic is you did you not forget we won the 1st two games whats your lame explaination for that? Get a life…

  • Quail Posted: May.11 at 8:01 pm
yea, uh, in case u guys didnt know… ITS OVER, THERE WAS NO CALL AND THERE IS NOTHIN ANYBODY CAN DO ABOUT IT NOW. THE NUGGETS WON.

  • Harlem_World Posted: May.11 at 8:07 pm
First of all (feel like Barkley, opening a sentence with that), Mark Cuban has gone WAY too far with the KMart moms situation. Maybe they do it differently in suburban Dallas, but in most parts of America, if you disrespect another mans mother, nothing good is going to come your way. As far as the foul goes, he should have wrapped him up and not left any doubt in any ones mind. Yes, we all can say we knew he was playing for the foul, but he played it way too soft. You don’t make a 50/50 play in that situation. That was soft. That being said, the officiating during these playoffs has been the worst ever. This is supposed to be PLAYOFF basketball. Where the hell are the PLAYOFF calls? Step your game up Stern.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: May.11 at 8:23 pm
This reminds me of Vince McMahon vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: May.11 at 8:24 pm
Kenyon Martin and his mom are Stone Cold Steve Austin.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: May.11 at 8:25 pm
    Luis Scola is Razor Ramon.
    Rich Hamilton is Kane.

  • Jacob Posted: May.11 at 8:48 pm
mark cuban has indeed sunk to a new low

  • Sarah Posted: May.11 at 8:58 pm
This kind of reminds me of that part in The Dark Knight when the dorky little lawyer smugly tells Morgan Freeman’s character about his plan to blackmail Batman, and Morgan points out the idiocy of such a plan. If only he had been there for Marky Mark, “So, you’re convinced this 6’9, 240 pounder is a punk, and your plan is to insult him through his mother on the day before Mother’s Day? Good luck.” Cuban is just one of the reasons (although a very big one) why I can’t understand how anyone can root for the Mavs.

  • kevin Posted: May.11 at 9:19 pm
AND MARK CUBAN CALLED KENYON MARTIN A PUNK, HES THE PUNK FOR TALKING TRASH TO HIS MOTHER AND NOT THE MAN HIS SELF KENYON MARTIN. WONDER WHY ? LOL I GUESS MARK AINT SUPIED KENYON WOULD HAVE KICKED HIS A………..UP AND DOWN THE COURT……………LOL

  • Des-Row Posted: May.11 at 9:28 pm
Sad. I, until now, have defended Mark Cuban against nearly everyone else, because at the end of the day, most hardcore fans wouldn’t have much more class or know their place any better than he would (in spite of what they’d tell you if asked). However, this is undefendable. How do you go and verbally go after an opposing players family member? Come on…

  • chilly moe Posted: May.11 at 10:18 pm
Cuban is a drunkard! It’s a shame when you can’t stand a team because of the owner. Unless I missed it, Dallas has always proven to be the ultimate choke artist. Remember the NBA finals against the Heat? Enough said, Cuban needs to get a life…what an embarrasment to the league!

  • Jennifer B. Posted: May.11 at 10:42 pm
Mark Cuban is such a jerk. He is the sole reason I hate the MAVS. It is really sad when a classless owner’s behavior always overshadows the team’s play. I hope one day the NBA bans him from sitting courtside. Once again he proves himself to be an embarrasement to the City of Dallas and the League.

  • Dacre Posted: May.11 at 11:38 pm
The biggest issue here is that the players didn’t play according to the game they played according to what outcome (the foul call) they wanted to be given out….I hope that made sense. What I’m meaning to say is that really, Josh Howard didn’t look like he fouled Carmelo all that much, Carmelo even pushed off a little to free himself up for that shot. Why did he still let him get an excellent look at that three? You want the ref’s to make a foul call you gotta FOUL. Certainly in that situation. Take that Rajon Rondo-Brad Miller play in the first round for example: They didn’t even think of calling much by way of a flagrant prior to Miller’s injury from the play. So it was with this play – A ref is going to call a touch foul in that situation. Certainly not in Mark Cubans house. For shame. The debacle that unfolded after that was indicative of the whole attitude in the building.

  • nate the great Posted: May.11 at 11:54 pm
Marc Cuban is a dead man.

  • Hollywood314 Posted: May.12 at 2:35 am
Mark Cuban was out of line but you know what kind of moves that he makes so this shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Nuggets have played great this postseason and last game the benefited from a questionable play.It happens,it’s over, deal with it.It is now up the Mavs to prolong the series a long as they can cuz after tonight’s game it is 3-1.They are a good team but besides Lebron and Co. Denver is playing the best ball of these ’09 playoffs.Oh yeah,Cuban should have to be in skybox not behind the bench.

  • nba-jersey-king Posted: May.12 at 8:08 am
Denver 4-1 series win and they will face the Cavs in the finals. Cuban can watch from home

  • browneyes602 Posted: May.12 at 9:08 am
I wonder what Cuban would have done/said had K-Mart approached his Mom that way? Seems that Cuban’s actions are replicative of a new American culture, no respect or consideration for others. It’s not just celebs, it’s everywhere.

  • inyoface Posted: May.12 at 9:24 am
if cuban said it to k-mart himself instaed of his mom we would have been free of that cuban son of a (b*tch)

  • Big Daddy Posted: May.12 at 10:48 am
Cuban is an punk ass beach… and everyone knows it. He is just totally classless. I don’t like the Mav’s because of his stupid antics. I can’t understand why Stern won’t grow some balls and ban that dumb ass from the arena. I guess money can’t buy you class but his comments just bought him an ass kicking, and a well deserving and over due one at that. I hope K-Mart destroys the Mav’s in the next game so Cuban can go back under the rock he slithered out from up under. Stern get on you F U K N job!!!!

  • ClydeSays Posted: May.12 at 11:43 am
Sorry, Mark. A blog & twitter apology probably won’t cut it. You think KMart’s one of your followers? Man up & apologize in person at the next game.

  • ciolkstar Posted: May.12 at 12:56 pm
This si some bullsh1t. People in Dallas should be ashamed.

  • Casey Posted: May.12 at 1:32 pm
Two things. Cuban has always been (and will continue to be) a D-bag, especially when he loses. And dude really should’ve made more of an effort to foul. If it’s an intentional foul, make it an INTENTIONAL FOUL no question. That’s all on the Mavs, not the refs. And that’s word.

  • jesus Posted: May.12 at 9:13 pm
man mark cuban is a dooshbag!!!

Cuban’s “apology” where he gives the backhanded “when the series comes back to Dallas…” retort shows what a piece of sh*t the guy is. The non-apology apology is dirtbag.

  • [...] Cuban apologized to Kenyon Martin and his mother for his treatment of her following Game 3 of the Nuggets/Mavs series. And the apology came via Cuban’s blog. Of course [...]

  • NJim Posted: May.13 at 7:07 pm

Cuban is a fool for trading away his future for Jason Kidd.

  • verbal Posted: May.15 at 11:04 am
look, the bottom line is this. As a professional u play to the whistle. If u aint heard the whistle why u standing around. regardless of a foul or not. As an NBA player u should know that refs blow calls all the time and u cant rely on no one but yourself to protect your teams interests. KG would have never let that ball go into the net, even after the whistle. The game is not only based on physical skill but also mental skill. Wright and the Mavs obviously lacked the mental focus to realise that u play until the whistle. Melo knew they were going to try and foul him, but when they did he didnt assume the call and stop playin, there was no whistle and he kept playing and made the shot. His mental egde won him the game, and thats part of competition. As for cuban, no comment, his actions speak for themselves

  • K-MART #4 Posted: May.15 at 11:25 am
who won the series? huh? huh? Huh? eff mark cuban i’m going to eat his heart that little scrounge!!!
