SLAM Radio: Rafe Bartholomew Q + A

The Pacific Rims author talks about Filipinos’ fanatic hoop culture.

By Jonathan Santiago / @ITSjonsantiagopac_rims

Have you read Pacific Rims?  If you haven’t, I suggest you do.

Written by author Rafe Bartholomew, the book chronicles his quest to understand and learn the Philippines’ unyielding passion for the game of basketball. Earlier this week, fellow SLAM contributor Aaron Fischman and I caught up with Rafe to discuss his book and what he learned from his experience living in the Philippines. Here are some excerpts from that conversation.

You can listen to the interview in its entirety on the latest episode of the Davis Sports Deli Podcast.

The only reason he wrote this is because he knows he is going to get a huge fan base from the filipinos, even if all his words here are just a bunch of crap, poorly researched and ultimately shallow writing. He is a virtual unknown and riding on this sport’s popularity among the filipino natives is his one way ticket to fame.

We just need one really good player from the Philippines to to prove that we are good enough to be in the league. just one and all the scouts will be all over the country!

No, Dawn. That’s one of the possibilities you’d think could be why he wrote the book until you read it. Read the book, and you will notice his passion. It seeps through each and every page.

This guy was so dedicated he learned Tagalog and the proper accent. That’s hard if you’re not a kid being taught a language from a young age.

I had the honor of going to the Philippines and balling with them quite a bit. They have an extreme passion for the game there. It was truly a great experience for me.
