Olympics to Include 3-on-3 Basketball?

There’s no question three-on-three hoops has been a long-time summer event across America and many other parts of the world. And, apparently, 3-on-3 ball was a huge success at the Youth Olympics in Singapore. Patrick Baumann of FIBA wants to take 3-on-3 basketball to the Olympics: “Buoyed by strong attendances and a positive response at the Youth Olympics in Singapore, International Federation Basketball (FIBA) secretary general Patrick Baumann is already seeking ways to take the smaller form of the sport to a bigger stage. ‘Yes, absolutely,’ Baumann told Reuters when asked if there would be a time when two basketball events would be staged at a full Olympics. ‘It would never replace the basic basketball, it is different. It is a tournament on its own. It is not a side tournament or an auxiliary event… it is a whole discipline on its own.’”

    My mouths watering at all the possible combinations, id say my three would be Dwight Howard, Durant, and D. Rose at point because he can score, and it would probably be easier for him passing with less defense.

    Hoop-it-up at the Olympics? Good! Make it a deep pool so they have something to show on TV other than volleyball. I think Jukai has a good lineup for the USA.

    Okayyy, i live in S’pore, i’ve gone to the tornament (semifinals later today) and as for it being a success, hold your horses, Herr Baumann. Yes it has the largest selection of teams taking part in any sport at the YOG’s, and there were some scares for the favs from teams like Virgin Islands (beat TUR) or Egypt (beat LIT) but sending all the AND one streetball kings won’t work, why? 2 FIBA referees and 10 sec. shotclocks. Plus 2 obligatory passes have to be made (outside the 3pt line) before a shot can be taken. It’s fast paced, and teams without size or excellent shooting have NO chance. But it’s basically organized halfcourt ball, not the helter skelter, carry the ball and travel world of streetball. (oh yeah, organisers here claimed sold out venues, then every recap on tv was played in front of half empty stands. And it’s ultra difficult to get ticks on game days. Laaame)

    As for FIBA hoping for some form of parity and a few surprises, here are the men’s quarterfinalists from yesterday: LIT vs SRB, USA vs ESP, ARG vs. GRE and CRO vs ISR. Yup, no surprise there. Coumtries with a high Fiba ranking also dominate at this event (at least at the U17 level). Too bad the best 2 teams of the contes (SRB and USA) are meeting in the semis today. Foregorn finals right there. Serbia has shooters, the best defender in this contest (6’7″ Popowski) and the only big who can bother the US’s Chol (Berdica, 6’9″ and bloody strong for his age). It’s gonna be a battle.

    @M Cho Precisely. By the time teams check the ball and get the 2 outside passes, it becomes a scramble to beat the shotclock. Every time. Never heard so many whistles and shotclock violation sirens in 2 5 min halves in my life. Games hardly have any flow. It’s stop and go for 10 mis.

    The tournament to decide who would represent the Uniteed States could be very exciting. Have a 16 team tournament full of NBA players to decide who will represent the U.S at the olympics.This would be better than the olympics.

    Yup, as i expected, Serbia just eliminated the US-boys in the semis. Gritty, intense game by SRB. Atrocious decision making by the US guards, especially PG Sterling Gibbs. The 6 footer ignored multiple low post mismatches by his big men to try and “Wade” himself to the basket. Most disappointing was big man Angelo Chol who has great hops but very bad hands, and lost the ball after grabbing boards at least 4x. He was utterly outplayed by Serbian big man Berdica. Chol’s outlet passes were intercepted so often, Serbia scored off his TO’s. Serbia is winning gold, no doubt in my mind.

    Dr James Naismith is turning in his grave. He was saddened whenever he passed playgrounds and saw people using only one basket. I would have to agree with him there, 3 on 3 is wack!

    Naismith also couldn’t figure out for a looong time that cutting a hole in the bottom of the net would be a good idea. Its not his game anymore, andy.

    If this were to happen….Spokane Hoopfest, the world’s largest 3-on-3 would be a great place to qualify teams for the Olympics with 6,990 teams, including 164 of them in the 3BA Elite Division. Check it out at http://www.spokanehoopfest.net.

    I played in many Gus Macker 3 on 3 basketball, the web site is http://www.macker.com
    They have the best 3on3 in USA tournaments! I think in 2012 they will have something about winners going to the Fiba database for a chance to go the Olympic!!!
