Doin’ It In the Park Aims for Independent Release, Seeks Support on Kickstarter

Even before its first public screening last spring, SLAM has been keeping all of our avid black-top basketball fans up to date on the latest news in regards to the award-winning documentary Doin’ it in the Park, NYC. Exploring the definition, history, culture and social impact of New York’s basketball scene, co-directors Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau visited and filmed runs at 180 basketball courts throughout the five boroughs. Since then, it has been screened across the world, including in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Spain, Italy and Japan. The film has won an array of awards at film festivals, including Best Documentary at the 31st New Jersey International Film Festival, Audience Award Best Feature at the 16th annual Urban World Film Festival, and Best Documentary runner-up at the San Francisco Black Film Festival.

Doin’ it in the Park recently decided it will do an independent commercial release of the film and is now looking for the support of the basketball community on Kickstarter to help fund the remaining distribution costs, such as music license fees, artwork, theatrical bookings, and mastering/manufacturing expenses, as it looks to bring the film to movie theaters around the globe. The goal is to reach $35,000 by February 20, 2013. There are some cool perks for those that pledge as little as a dollar, too. So definitely show support to the movement. And if you haven’t heard, it’s a must-watch film that all basketball and non-basketball folks will appreciate. To help support the film, visit its official Kickstarter page. And for additional information or the latest news on DIITP, also be sure to check out its Facebook and Twitter pages.
