The W’s guest columnist, Temeka Johnson, talks about her drive to improve.
Meek is always working. Always. Whether it is related to basketball or her Foundation, she is constantly working to improve and get better.
This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise; for Temeka Johnson, she wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, getting to where
she’s at in the game of basketball took countless hours of training and work before practice, on her off day(s), and any other free moment she might’ve had. Still, that’s just the type of person she is – always learning.
Below, Meek takes us through the recent happenings in Paris and the work she and her personal trainer are putting in before and after practices and games.

What’s up SLAMonline?!
Sorry for being late, but we had a lot of games last week, lots of travels, and as I mentioned in my last blog, I have my personal trainer with me. No excuses, though, I’m back! Did you miss me?
We secured our place in our league and continue to play well and move forward. Lost one game, but won our last one the way we needed to win it (by a margin of over 20 points). I played pretty well with my own 20-point effort in the game. But the most important part was getting that much neede
d victory. No matter what we do individually, basketball is still a team game. I wanted to make sure we won that game, and was going to do whatever it took to win. But, having teammates like Lenae Williams (former DePaul player who I’m sure you’ve heard about with the Phoenix Mercury) make it easy. She can ball y’all! You’ll see. She’s also been a great assist to me while learning the French way of life! Thanks, Lenae!
Anyway, my training has been amazing thus far. I’m very glad I made this part of my offseason routine, and I don’t plan to stop. In a short amount of time, I’ve improved my shot, shot selection, ball handling and decision making ability. You can never stop learning, unless YOU CHOOSE to stop learning. Even after winning the WNBA Championship, you have to be like MJ and keep getting better. There will be a target on my back. There will be my doubters wanting me to prove myself yet again. But I’m ready for it all. I love this game, and in order for the game to love me back, I have to do what’s necessary. That’s what I’m doing now. If that means a three-hour session on my off-day or a two-hour session before practice, then that’s what I’m going to do.
This week has been great, though, and I’m looking forward to a nice break this weekend to see more of Paris with my FAM. We need true friends and genuine people around us, and I am doing that now. It makes my life easier, and I am enjoying it more. Happiness is key, but having the right people around you makes finding happiness that much easier. Sorry to get all preachy on you, but that’s what I’m about – providing HOPE!
Talk to you all soon! Until next time,
Meek
