Alana Beard Joins SLAMonline

The Mystics superstar debuts her new blog, “The Mind of an Athlete.”

I don’t think it’s a stretch, by any means, to say SLAM is blowin’ the lid off of traditional coverage of the WNBA. Simply put, you just won’t find articles, blogs, exclusive interviews, and nationwide player endorsement from such a well-known media outlet anywhere else in the world.

But we’re not done; not by a long shot — enter WNBA superstar, Alana Beard.

Alana joins the SLAMonline team with one goal in mind — to allow fans to get inside the “mind” of a pro. Her new blog, “The Mind of an Athlete”, will chronicle the day to day grind professional players go through and serves as an unprecedented opportunity for fans to communicate directly with the four-time WNBA All-Star.

Her blog is in the process of being custom designed, but Alana wrote a special introductory message below. I, for one, couldn’t be more excited to have Alana on board and am thrilled that a player of her caliber is willing to be so actively involved with fans.

Be sure to leave Alana a comment and/or question as she will be reading and responding to the majority of them. Look for her first official blog in the next couple of weeks and give her a warm welcome! – Ben

86044985ND016_Mystics_MediaWhat’s up SLAMonline?!

Ben told you all on twitter yesterday that he had something cooking! Ta daaaaa, it’s me! Some of you may think it’s awesome. Others might just shrug their shoulders and say “whatever.” Maybe you’ll do some of both. Or neither.

Either way, I’m excited SLAMonline and I could get something all stirred up and ready to serve! Therefore, “You just got served!” Isn’t that a movie? Haha — I may be corny, but I crack myself up.

Anyway, so Ben and I collaborated on ideas for a blog and I’m excited to have my own little spread for a while. I thought it would be cool to allow you all to have an in depth view of what really goes in an athlete’s mind. Not surprisingly, we are going to call it “The Mind of an Athlete.”

I like sharing and giving people that perspective because I think so often, people in general are “misunderstood.” By the way, that’s one of my favorite songs off the Lil’ Wayne, Carter III CD, which was my first rap CD purchased…and may I add, that I absolutely LOVE. I thought I was so hard core, too.

So, yeah, getting back to the blog and my ideas. I want this blog to be really interactive. I want to talk about anything and everything. Literally. It can be anything from basketball, injuries, WNBA teams and seasons, my thoughts on the BP oil spill in Louisiana, or even Brandy and Ray J and how obvious that lace front wig is.

I can’t promise that I’ll know a lot (at all) or have an opinion about everything, but rest assured, I’ll make something up. Just kidding. Actually, no, I really will.

Ask all the questions you want and I’ll for sure do my best to respond to as many as possible. With that being said, since I’m out for the season because of ankle surgery, I simply see this as another form of therapy.

In the meantime, get those minds going and questions coming. Until next time…Whoop whoop!

WOW! Whoop! whoop! Alana, glad to see you on the boards, at least, for the time being, on this one.

Do you think your team have a chance to draft maya moore next year?

  • AB

Duke is garbage, eh? Its a pretty prominent academic school, gorgeous campus and pretty rich in history in more than one aspect. Sorry you feel such disgust. lol. You sound angry, lol. Im all about therapy if you need it. haha.

As for drafting Maya Moore, I surely hope we wont have a chance! Im only saying that because If we did have a chance, it would mean the Mystics would have a terrible year this year. I for sure don’t want that to happen! Maya is without a doubt a very special talent, who wouldn’t want her:-)!

Mike, We shall talk about the BP oil spill in another post. By the way, thanks for the DVD!

Welcome, Ms. Beard. I’ll be checking out the blog. And my hometown Mystics. I’m glad you’ve joined the SlamFam!

  • The Philosopher

Duke is NOT garbage. One of the best educational institutions in the world.

Alana, why did you wait until preseason to have the ankle surgery? Wasn’t your ankle injured last season? Regardless of the reason, I am definitely wishing you a full and speedy recovery. Looking forward to seeing you back in action next season.

  • don

    cool.

A.B. This is your favorite fan checking in. How is the ankle coming along? How soon til you can start working out again? It’s been a while since you worked out so come back gradually, please. I read somewhere that it doesn’t bother you not to play but I bet you get anxious to compete at the start of every Mystics game, now don’t you? I saw Donna Orender, President of the WNBA, at our last home game on May 21st against New York. I shook her hand and asked her if she could give us an exemption for you so we could have an eleventh active player to compete against other teams. She said she didn’t think the Mystics needed any more players cause we were winning all of our games so far. I saw her one more time that same game and mentioned it again and she said she would take care of us, meaning she would take care of the Mystics. What is your opinion on this? Don;t you think the WNBA should give us an exemption for you? Have you and also Angela Taylor communicated with Ms. Orender? I still remember the two big hugs you gave me at Katie Smith’s press conference. You will always be my WNBA MVP and next year with your guidance, the Mystics will win it all. When I hear people brag about the lady in Phoenix scoring 35 points it makes me sick. You are way better than she is. You haven’t had any brushes with the law. I will see you at the game Sunday afternoon in “Kia’s Krazies” corner in Section 110, Row B, Seat 20. Gooooooooooooooooooo Mystics!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately I know all to well about duke university being that my father went to school there and I was born in duke hospital. So yeah I’m a little angry. I’ve followed ur career and have been proud to say I’ve routed against u from day 1. Its not an disrespectful disgust. Its more of the way that many blacks couldn’t stand Larry Bird cause he was just so damn nasty. I am a tarheel fan and anyone who plays duke fan. its been difficult enough. Watching the mens program come to life and national prominence, but now their womens program is hurting my eyes as well. So while wishing u the best in your career I also must say. F jay bilas f mike gminski f f trajan langdon f carlos boozer f johnny dawkins f antonio lang let’s go ivory latta and marion jones is gonna be a headache in the L and as a hatfield thank u for addressing the rant of a mccoy.

@ Susan, hows it going! to clear the air, I didn’t “wait” to have surgery. I came back from Poland in December and didnt go back because I didnt want to. I wanted to stay in DC and just really work on my game and take care of my body. As women athletes, we don’t really get that needed individual time because we are playing games. I was working out with Julie, Riss and the crew for months until I twisted my ankle again in March. Three weeks later, we saw that I need surgery after that sprain and there was no other way around it. Believe me, if I didnt have to have surgery, I wouldn’t have chosen to have it. I take it you forget the days when I actually played with a torn labrum in my shoulder just so I could play the 2007 season and then have surgery afterwards;-)!

@ John, not being on the court for sure bothers me, but at the same time I have a great understanding knowing that things happens for a reason. Life is much bigger than basketball. Of course, its my love, but sometimes love must wait:-)!
