The W’s guest columnist, Temeka Johnson, talks about her Foundation and the WNBA All-Star team.
It has been an absolute pleasure to get to know Temeka Johnson over the past two years.
Her drive to help others is inspiring, her devotion to improving her game is second to none, and her leadership on and off the court is simply amazing. In her latest post, Meek gives us an update on the exciting things to come with her Foundation along with her next goal of making the 2010 WNBA All-Star game.
Make sure to leave Meek a comment (she reads and responds to them all) and visit WNBA.com to vote. – Ben

What’s up, SLAMOnline!!!
I know it’s been awhile since I last talked with you all, but it’s been busy with the 2010 season and getting back from France. I’m so happy to be back, and happy to be back on the WNBA court with my Phoenix Mercury teammates. So much has happened over the last month – from returning from France, to having our Straight to the Point Gala, to the Ring Ceremony and opening the season with a victory over the Sparks – but I’m blessed!
I don’t know where to start…actually, yes I do. Today starts my quest to make the WNBA All-Star team. I know that many of you voted for me last year and I was THIS CLOSE to making it, but I’m hoping that this season I make it on the team. It has been a career goal of mine, and this off-season I worked hard to improve my game and be voted by all of you into the game. So, starting today, PLEASE vote for me! Early and often!!! The team is starting off slow, but we’re going to get in the groove. Head to head, I’ve fared pretty well, but I can still improve on things. The season isn’t that long and it’s important that we get things together quickly; so I came into the season prepared to take on a bigger role – scoring, defense and leadership.
So yeah, vote for me!!! Check out my campaign on Facebook (Temeka Johnson-Meek) and on Twitter (@Quickdeuce) – my marketing FAM is on it!
More importantly, my foundation has been working very hard this year. We had our 2nd annual Teacher Appreciation Lunch at my adopted school (Magnolia Woods Elementary) in Baton Rouge, and it was a huge success. I also joined my teammate, Ketia Swanier, for the 1st Annual Straight to the Point Gala in Phoenix that helped raise funds for both of our foundations. We had a blast on the rooftop of The Clarendon Hotel all night long! I want to say thank you to my teammates and the Phoenix Mercury for coming out to support us – it truly meant a lot!
I’m not done, though – in August I’ll be announcing the first person that will receive the Jewel Johnson Scholarship in honor of my grandmother, who was an educator for 33 years. I’m VERY excited about this, and I know she will be smiling down from above! It is because of all of you that I can do this. From the donations to the purchases of my merchandise – it all goes to support the foundation and the scholarship fund. Speaking of which, we still have the WNBA Commemorative Season Calendar on sale here where ALL of the proceeds go directly to the scholarship fund (which we are expanding to the Phoenix community this year)! Also, my site will be re-launching next month! I’m so excited about it, and I think you all will be too! No more Meek2.com, as everything will go through www.MeeksHope.org. Can’t wait!!!
Ok, that’s enough for now! I’ll be back in 2 weeks, but make sure you follow me on Twitter! AND VOTE FOR ME FOR THE ALL-STAR GAME!!!
Until next time,
Meek
