Laboratory That Tested Taurasi Has Questionable History

Lab previously suspended by World Anti-Doping Agency.

WNBA standout and former UConn star Diana Taurasi tested positive for a mild stimulant while playing in a pro league in Turkey, her lawyer told The Associated Press on Thursday night.

However, research has uncovered a tarnished history for the laboratory responsible for Taurasi’s testing including a recent suspension from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

In 2009, WADA suspended the accredited laboratories in Ankara, Turkey (the one responsible for testing Taurasi) and Penang, Malaysia from carrying out anti-doping analysis for two and three months. During the period of suspension, the aforementioned laboratories (which are part of the 34 WADA-accredited laboratories worldwide) were not permitted to analyze doping samples.

As stated on their website, WADA is responsible for accrediting and re-accrediting anti-doping laboratories, as well as ensuring that they maintain the highest quality standards. Whenever a laboratory does not meet these quality requirements WADA can suspend the laboratory’s accreditation.

While it is unclear if foul-play is suspected in the accusations against Taurasi, it is worth noting that she has won the last four Euroleague Titles, is considered the world’s most dominant player, and currently leads the Euroleague in scoring. WADA does have extremely strict confidentiality rules in place that prohibit any employee from disclosing personal testing results without notifying the athlete first in accordance with other mandatory procedures. According to the guidelines, results and names cannot be released without a conclusive testing of the “B” sample.

To date, Taurasi’s “B” sample has not been tested.

Taurasi has been tested more than 30 times in 10 years by the NCAA, WNBA, USADA and WADA and has never failed a test or been suspended of using performance enhancing substances.

Taurasi’s lawyer, Howard Jacobs, has released the following statement:

“Diana Taurasi has been advised that she has tested positive for a mild stimulant.  She wishes to stress that this notification does not involve steroids or recreational drugs of any kind.

In the 10 years of competition at the collegiate, professional and Olympic level, Diana Taurasi has never taken, been suspected of using, or tested positive for any performance enhancing substance. While she is fully cooperating with authorities, there are serious doubts about the accuracy of the test results.  She has requested that the “B” sample be tested, and is investigating all possible causes.  We are confident that Diana will be fully vindicated once all the evidence is reviewed. She regrets that someone has violated the confidentiality rules of this process, and will make no further statement at this time.”

Story developing.

    You bet. And, thank you.

I’ve been curious as to why DT hasn’t been playing,I’ve caught a couple of her turkey games online, which is amazing that I found a channel that will allow me to do that.I will say that while she may have been tested the “30″ or so times over the years,as an athlete gets older and the fact that she’s never had a real break since 2005 or possibly 2004 after her wnba season,I can’t remember which,I’m sure it is starting to wear on her. However,I highly doubt these allegations to ring true. For starters, when anybody gets to the level of success and popularity that she has gotten to,you always have people that wanna throw nothing but salt your way.And the fact that she’s never been found guilty of any substance after being tested that many times? Now suddenly they find something and don’t press to do a secondary test? I smell a rat.How can you suspend somebody without getting all the facts too.

    Yeah I call shenanigans here

Definitely interesting and, if nothing else, incredibly suspicious. I’m sure we’ll know more soon.

I’m very confused by Dee’s comment. Nowhere does the article state that Taurasi has been suspended. Also, saying that “she’s never been found guilty of any substance after being tested that many times?” is misleading. In fact, there’s never been anything found so there were no allegations to which guilt could be attached.

Great. Malaysia in the map for the wrong reasons again.

  • Zoran

Juan Dixon tested positive for anabolic steroids in Europe and US media has always and STILL prints that he just took a body building supplement from GNC.

US sports media is pathetic the way they try to cover up these US athletes that get caught doping.

According to this it was a sleeping pill,if thats true, thats a retarded thing to suspend somebody for

    Reportedly modafinil.

We love you Taurasi, you know 25 millions Fenerbahce fans are with you!!

@Zoran, you obviously know jacksquat about the US media so please just shut up lol. Anyways if it were sleeping pills i don’t see what the issue is.

  • Michelle

Not sleeping pills. Those pills are to stay awake. Not performance enhancing in anyway :S Also sometimes used for children with ADHD.

  • Jeff

She tested positive for alcohol a few years ago.

Modafinal is a PED. If her ‘B’ sample is positive, she should receive an Olympic ban (for 2012).

Will be interesting to see how the WNBA comes down on her…

    Modafinil*

  • FenerIndy

In Turkey people support their team religiously. Obviously rival fans leaked some confidential information even before it is proven, just to hurt Fenerbahce’s chances of possible success in Euroleague. Considering she didn’t use steroids or recreational drugs, she was tested positive for something that is not illegal in US, I believe she is the victim here. Comments from rival media shows how happy they are that they shadowed or maybe stopped Fener’s run by ruining the image of its # 1 player.

Great article with links to the info from WADA. Thanks for doing this research!

I came across these quotes on pro and con of whether the labs are credible. I used to think the labs weren’t trustworthy after they leaked the Landis results, but now that he says he was doping I’m more inclined to trust the labs! http://sportsanddrugs.procon.org/view.answers.php?questionID=001220

First of all those labs were suspended for only 3 months in 2009. You realize that we are in 2010 right?? Secondly, a lab can be suspended for several reasons, since WADA website doesn’t tell the reason for suspension you can’t assume that they were suspended because of their inability to test the amount of modafinil in somebody’s blood. Moreover the same governing body seems to have removed the suspension later. So just because you failed in the first mid term in a class should you be failed from the second one without even taking it??

In the us, the split is tested at another lab, not the same lab when the A sample tested positive. Did this not happen here?
