Guest Post: DeLisha Milton-Jones on Jerry West’s Struggle

The importance of valuing one’s self.

I received a BBM from DeLisha the other day with the message, “Interested in a blog?” Of course, I replied excitedly with a yes and asked what the blog was about. She told me she just read an article on Laker great Jerry West regarding recent revelations on how he struggled with depression and self-esteem issues throughout his entire life. DeLisha, nicknamed “Sunshine” for her positive attitude and demeanor, was inspired to convey an optimistic and encouraging message to the world that each person is valued and loved. Below, is DeLisha’s message. – Ben

Hi, everyone!

It’s your girl, DeLisha Milton-Jones, blogging again. I hope this finds everyone doing well. I’m back in Europe doing what I do best… BALLIN’!

I had some free time and was thinking about a recent article I read about the great Jerry West and his struggles with depression.  As a result of reading it, my heart was touched and I decided to share my thoughts with you all. Hopefully you enjoy and I hope it’s an inspiration to someone.

Doubt sinks so let it drown in the deep abyss of failures, setbacks, frustration and negativity. Don’t allow these doubts, fears, frustration, setback and failures to form an anchor on your life that will only hold you back from your future.

How many times do we hear stories of legends and everyday hard working people who suffer alone from depression? I have had my fill of these stories and it saddens me to know that people all over the world suffer in silence.

How many of us wake up every morning filled with grief, self-doubt and no value of our own self-worth only to put on a fake smile once we leave the house to face the world? If only everyone knew that they were special! Everyone has something to give while we bide our time on this planet.

We must stop seeking acceptance from others and accept ourselves for the beautiful individuals we are. I don’t wanna look like you and I don’t want you to look like me; be a carbon copy of yourself. What’s so wrong with that? Instead of allowing someone else to bully you into thinking you’re worthless, how about bullying yourself into believing you’re special, uniquely designed, smart and beautiful inside and out!

Stop believing what magazines, reality TV, and society as a whole are telling you about you. No one knows you better than you do. You are your own best critic. If you want to believe in something, believe in YOU!!!!

Hope floats so let your dreams, wishes, goals and aspirations soar high on the wings of an eagle. Every morning you awaken, let your positivity rise like a Phoenix inside of you.  Allow yourself to feel worthy of the air you breathe and the space you occupy. You ARE somebody and You ARE special. Learn to love yourself and appreciate the talents you have to offer.

As the old cliché states, “It is better to give than receive.” Try giving a kind word, a hug, a smile or even a kind gesture and watch how those things are given back to you. Your acts of kindness could very well change the course of someone’s day or even life.

Sincerely from my heart to yours,

#LOVE

I’ll admit, I had no idea who DeLisha Milton-Jones was prior to reading this, but I’m glad I did.
I love how she wrote this in a way that anyone can read it and take comfort in her words, not just Jerry West.
Depression is no joke, I battled it as a teen and young adult, and if just one person who’s currently feeling down can come away from this post with a smile on their face, that would be awesome.

This is a WNBA forum. Would you stop posting stuff about NBA players? The NBA is garbage.
