Brittney Griner Dunks as Baylor Advances Past Florida

by Kelly Kline / @Fullcourtwbb

On Tuesday, Brittney Griner became just the second woman to dunk in Women’s NCAA Tournament history in the Baylor Bears’ 76-59 win over the Florida Gators to advance to the Sweet 16.

Griner went up strong from the second hash mark and put down a right-handed dunk with authority. The 6-8 junior finished with a game high 25 points and a sure spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10.

“I just caught it, palmed it and I just went up and threw it in,” said Griner in a post-game interview. Tennesee’s Candace Parker is the only other player to dunk in the Women’s NCAA Tournament.

After the game Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey had plenty to say about the dunk.

“That was pretty! That wasn’t a barely over the rim type of dunk, that was a monster dunk, and it fired me up,” Mulkey said. “I think Brittney is so conscious of people writing good or bad about the dunk that she’s scared to get excited sometimes and celebrate a dunk, because she’s been written about in a negative way, and I said, honey if I could dunk, I’d do back flips down the floor.”

Griner had not dunked yet this season, and despite her 6-8 frame, has only dunked five previous times in college. She dunked four times her freshman year and once her sophomore year against Texas Tech on February 9, 2011. Last night, the dry spell was broken with authority.

“I told her about two weeks ago, I said, Even if you miss it (a dunk), it sends a message, ‘I’m here to play,’” said Mulkey, who understands the pressure.

Griner was happy, but meek about the accomplishment: “It definitely felt good to throw it down. Definitely an honor, I’m happy.”

Griner dunked 52 times in 32 games as a high school senior. Griner set a single-game record with seven dunks against Aldine High School.

Throw it down big girl, throw it down.

  • Madterps

This is exactly why most real basketball fans don’t like watching women basketball.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

she’s 6’8″ – her dunking is not newsworthy.

  • Heals

@nbk, thank you, ditto. Who cares, funny thing is popular opinion would paint us as sexist cause we don’t a shht about this, but in actuality everyone making a fuss about this is more sexist. Griner’s other skills shoud’ve got their attention long before this…

    ^ Cosign Heals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    Heals speaking that gospel.

  • BasketballJunkie

that was weaker than a reggie miller dunk! she was better off just slapping glass real hard….

  • dma

if she dunks, people criticize her and call her a man (check out last night’s TT on twitter). when she dunks, we say it’s weak. if she doesn’t dunk she’s criticized for being a soft 6’9″. she can’t win.

  • nbaNw8

    Thats a man. lol

  • logues

she has the manliest girl voice ive ever heard

  • mike

    Check the bulge.

  • jas

@nbk the news worthy portion is that she only the 2nd woman in history to dunk in the NCAA tournament. It doesn’t happen all the time because its rare that a woman is 6’8″
@Heals the only thing sexist is the “man” comments about this young lady of 21 years of age.
@basketballjunkie its still two points right? I don’t think she was really concerned with doing a power dunk. She went about her business and added 2 points to her game high 25 points.
@Logues ehr voice is manly because she is sooo big. Her shoe size is probably portional to her height/size as well
@nba SHE is not a man. She is just a very tall and large woman. People come in different shapes and sizes, its human nature, thats just the way it is.
@ Mike, there is no bulge. She was born a woman and is a woman, not a man.

  • GC6

Cosign @NBK she massive she should be able to dunk she also has a giant wing span

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

jas, that newsworthy aspect is not included in this article. So, uhm, how newsworthy is it?
    .
She dunked 52 times in 32 games in high school. We are supposed to be surprised she dunked 1 time this whole year? I don’t think so.
    .
She’s a great player, and a great talent. She’s basically making Baylor a national championship contender on her own. Lets focus on that. Not one f’n dunk. (But she should keep dunking, and she should do it regularly, that would scare the crap out of other teams if she’s just dunking on them and they can’t touch the backboard on a lay-up).

  • blakos

whats her bbg average again? Something redic

  • nbafanatic

    is that javale mcgee’s sister?

  • bike

Regardless of her abilites, that’s a whole lot of woman. I mean, a honking whole lot of woman.

  • str8 from samoa

shes like da girl version of javale mcgee haha or are they related?

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

    @dma – 100% correct.

  • Trevor

    that was ferocious

  • http://shelbygal24@yahoo.com Michele Cooper

Griner has my vote for “Player of the Decade”…she is a game changer and is one to put the team first and foremost. Griner is an exciting player to watch along with her teammates and Coach Mulkey and deserving to win the national championship. She is exactly what womens basketball is all about…toughness. Good luck Lady Bears and bring home THE trophy!!

Nets need a center we need to draft her

We may be looking at the most dominant female ball player of all time.
    Like, really.

A dunk off one step in a women’s game, pretty nifty. Was expecting a fast break dunk.

  • toinefan88

Of the vert dawg that’s crazy! Anybody hating probably can’t do that junk in traffic like that.

  • Kabelion

Big Baby Davis can’t dunk on a fast break by his lonesome. Get off her back.

  • ljack41

Griner will change the wnba, when she arrives, the gs news is the league will not fold, I think she should ,dunk it brings excitement to the women’s game it will be above the rim

  • Rik Smits Mullet

she probably got more male hormones then the average girl.
Just like some dudes have more female hormones.
Ever seen some of these east german ddr female athletes.
They were experimenting with injecting male hormones.
Those woman physically turned in to dudes.
Not like it happend to this girl.
But i was wondering if see had a child with an athletic nba superstar would there kid be the GOAT?

  • @Deknowz

I respect the women’s game for their fundamental execution but I still find it hard to be impressed by something I can do routinely at 5 inches shorter. She will be the Shaq of the WNBA though!

  • Kent Kanada

Look easy, not a monster dunk. She should get angry, bend those knees a little. Hang on the rim, Kenyon that backboard. Then I’ll be impressed.

Still, she is top beast for Beast-mode Baylor.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@Kent – There’s plenty of that around YouTube, just go look it up and be impressed.

@deknowz this is against the top level of competition among her peers, either way I’m pretty sure your not grabbing a rebound in traffic and dunking it back in game let alone the biggest stage of your career thus far. Look I just dont understand why people want to diminish what shes doing, I understand people that say her other highlights should be put up here as well, but in the world we live in hype sells and thats what stories are written about. The same reason Blake’s jersey sells more than Love’s.

  • Phil the thrill

    He’s pretty good!

  • Mike

    Great lady dunk!
