Coaching Carousel update: Terry Porter and Vinnie Del Negro

By Sam Rubenstein

Well, it seems that both the Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls – who, now that I think of it had players on the pre-season split cover of SLAM before last season, thought of as title contenders – have landed new head coaches.

Out in the desert, Steve Kerr has tabbed Terry Porter, who has some head coaching experience with the Milwaukee Bucks. But he’s not holding that against him.

“He’s got a great combination of leadership skills,” Kerr said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press. “He’s a great communicator. And his coaching experience, two years as a head coach, is important to me.”

Let’s hope he can communicate with Shaq and Steve Nash. This team already has leaders.

And in Chicago, the Doug Collins headfake got us in the air, and the Bulls are going with someone who was rumored to be taking over the aforementioned Suns job. Vinny Del Negro! And the logic behind that move…

Little is known about his basketball philosophy since he never has coached before. Del Negro interviewed for the Suns’ coaching job that Terry Porter landed on Saturday, but failed to make Kerr’s list of four finalists.

Um, okay then, sounds good Chicago! The story says the offer will be made to Vinny, but nothing is finalized. I don’t see him saying no to the job. Another day in the life of Doug Collins.
