Dave Bing Could Be Detroit’s Next Mayor

by Marcel Mutoni

Detroit, as you may have heard, has for some time now been embroiled in a humiliating mayoral controversy. The city’s mayor, Kwame Kilkpatrick, became the first mayor in the country’s history to be charged with a felony while still in office last month.

If an election were to be held today, according to the polls, a former Piston would be chosen to take Kilkpatrick’s place in the city’s top office.

From The Detroit News:

A new poll for Detroit Renaissance, to be released today, suggests how that race might shape up: Dave Bing, the former Pistons great turned industrialist, would beat all likely comers in a special election to replace Kilpatrick.

“The feedback I got was very positive” about a likely run for mayor, Bing says. “But you’ve got to perform. You’ve got to deliver results. That’s what my life’s been about, so that doesn’t scare me.”.

A wildly successful business man following his playing days, Bing suited up in the NBA for 12 years, making the All-Star team seven times. He was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1990, and later named as one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players.
