SLAM 124: On Sale Now!

Point Guard Heaven.

For someone that doesn’t care too much about the Jazz, I’ve sure been writing about them a lot this year. From a sales perspective, my guess is that the star of this issue will be Chris Paul, as on a national level he is the more popular of these two great point guards. But from a SLAM history perspective, the big deal is that a player from the Utah Jazz is finally on a SLAM cover. Hey, who said we don’t listen to our readers?

At the moment, this dope issue, featuring two awesome—and inextricably linked—players who didn’t make it onto our six-cover extravaganza last month, is only on sale in the rarest of Manhattan spots now, but you know we still like you to see your SLAM covers here first. The cover stories are mainly q+a’s, which were written by veteran Lang (CP) and newcomer Ryne (DW). Because Chris and Deron are a little sick of the comparisons, and because we deemed them each worthy of their own cover (even if it’s the same month), Lang and Ryne spent their respective stories sticking mainly to big-upping their subject, which I was in favor of. However, these guys are also regular sports fans who like to debate, and in the weeks since they turned their stories in, they’ve been going back and forth about which player is better. Come back here Friday, by which point this issue should have started to show up nationally, as Lang and Ryne will unveil their e-debate on the topic.

P.S. I see you, Matt the Jazz Fan.

P.P.S. Pre-empting the business questions: both covers will be sold at newsstands everywhere, including overseas. I’m not sure if we have the ability to see who out-sells who, but if we do I’ll try and fill everyone in down the road when we get the numbers. Subscribers will be divided evenly: 50 percent getting Chris and 50 percent Deron, totally by luck. If you don’t like the one you get, trade it to another SLAM fan via our site. Or just go to simbackissues.com, click on SLAM and buy the one you want.

Adam: I think the King is probably better this year but I wish we could have a good comparison when Kobe is not hurt

  • Jase

    Damn beautiful covers.

I’ll say this again,if Ryan Jones says Kobe is the best player in the world, who are we to argue? 8)

I’m really excited to read both of these cover stories. Is this Ryne’s first cover story? Props homie.

  • Boing Dynasty

    Wrong #8.

  • tealish

Very nice covers. I like how they both are of the same color scheme cause it shows it’s the same issue. For me, too many cover variations kind of make it less special. So yes, very nice.

  • Mo

Sorry Ryne but it’s the Jazz as a team that shuts Paul down. Surely not Deron by himself. He gets blown by by smaller guards too often.

  • Mo

Dacre, I think the Amare/Bosh has some validity. Those would be nice covers.

  • C-Mac

    lovin derons beard!

  • 800lb

As a life long Jazz fan, I’m happy. Deron looks badass on the cover, and although I think fans of both players would have rather had a dedicated cover issue you totally have to go for the story.

Hurry up 123 getting to the UK :(

  • Big Marv’

THanx for the preview glad that i know that Khalid wrote the Stuckey piece. Can’t wait.
Little info: When the new issue hits the stand in the Big Apple it takes at least four weaks for it to hit the stands and magazineshops in Rotterdam Holland (Thats Western Europe ya’ll).

You know, if there was going to be one Jazz player that made the Jazz’s first SLAM cover, I’m glad it was Deron.

Wow! A shout out on the #1 article on slamonline!!! I can die in peace now!
Thanks (egocentrically) and for the article (whichI’ll get in a couple of months here in belgium) too!

  • German Reignman

    Whats an ESPN anyway ?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

I was wondering where Matt was! :-)

  • matt the jazz fan

I’m here I’m here – still all aflutter!

Love the matching colour schemes too.

Also – notice how they match two franchises that should swap names (h/t Simmons I think).

The “spine line” makes light of that exact situation, Matt. Also, I know I need to grow up since 95% of these comments are positive and I’m very proud of that, but did ESPN even run a story on these guys? It was like one quick page. Our issue features exclusive, lengthy q+a’s with these guys. I’ve got to believe real fans will prefer this issue about a million times to 1.

What’s up with the ESPN hate, Ben?

  • matt the jazz fan

    i’m sure they did.
but i’m also sure it’s not an either or proposition.
=> i like some of the stuff on espn (i know i know, blasphemy – but it’s usually page2 stuff, so maybe that redeems me somewhat) and most of the stuff on slamonline.
    since you asked ;-)

    F*ck ESPN.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

I don’t hate ESPN at all (except for how crappy SportsCenter is now)—I subscribe to the magazine and read the website all the time (not to mention obviously watching tons of live sports on their channel). I just hate seeing our really nice two covers compared to their really boring one cover.

@Tad:I already said that. Copycat. 8)

Thanks again for a great SLAM issue! The cover can’t be as hot as the last one though, that was the best ever!!!

For me as a Lakers fan I would love to read an article about LA natives Farmar & Ariza. About those two guys being hometown heroes for the city of L.A! Please help me with an article about those two great players, and offcourse their very important role on the bench-mob!!
