Move over, Christmas. No offense, but we think it’s suffice to say the NBA Playoffs are, in fact, the most wonderful time of the year. With the first round almost finished (we see you, Denver and Memphis), the postseason will soon evolve from a dogfight into an all-out war. Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Paul Pierce, Tim Duncan and plenty others are all dialed in and ready to win it, but as we know, only one team will emerge. Twelve more wins, fellas, 12 more wins. Word to LeBron’s mouthpiece.

Today, in the spirit (and craze) of the most wonderful time of the year, we are giving away two fresh, stylish, extra-dope SLAM snap-back hats (pictured above).

To win, make a bold Playoff prediction by dropping a comment on this post (please provide your real email address, so we can contact you if you’re the winner) and presenting a plausible argument for your prediction. You can predict a series upset, an unexpected team making a deep run, an unexpected player that’ll catch fire, or anything absolutely crazy (as long as you back it up). For example, you could explain why Chris Bosh will win Finals MVP. Or you could explain why Corey Brewer and Ty Lawson will lead the Nuggets on an improbable run to the Western Conference Finals, only to lose in Game 7 on a Matt Bonner four-point play. Or you could explain why the Clippers will be on the brink of elimination in the WCF, fire Vinny Del Negro mid-game, promote Chauncey Billups to head coach, then go ahead and win the ‘Chip.

    There will not be a buzzer beater in this year’s NBA playoffs.
    One theme that has been apparent in the first round of the NBA playoffs is the inability of NBA offenses to make game-tying or game-winning shots in the last 30 seconds of games. There have been plenty of examples of this so far, and I will describe to you some of the highlights. In game 3 of the Boston-Atlanta series, Paul Pierce could have won the game in regulation, but missed a pretty good shot at the buzzer, which sent the game to overtime. In game 4 of the Orlando-Indiana series, Glen Davis missed a game-tying shot at the buzzer which would have sent the game to double overtime. In game 4 of the Miami-New York series, Dwyane Wade missed a corner 3 which would have won the game for Miami. In game 3 of the Clippers-Memphis series, Rudy Gay missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have won the game for Memphis, and in game 4 of that series, Chris Paul got the ball stolen from him with less than a second left, which sent the game to overtime. The one exception was in game 1 of the Oklahoma City-Dallas series, when Kevin Durant hit a floater with under 5 seconds remaining to give Oklahoma City a victory.
    In previous years, we have seen many more buzzer-beaters in both the regular season and playoffs, so why is there a lack of excitement this season? I don’t believe it is due to the lockout and team chemistry; I think it is because NBA defenses are getting better and players are playing with more effort. We all know the saying “defense wins championships”, and this is proving to be very true this year. I believe that NBA players, more now then ever, really love the game of basketball and aren’t just doing it for the money. That is why the defense has picked up. In the 90′s and early 2000′s offense dominated the game and players would much rather have a game-winning shot than a key stop on defense. I think now, coaches, bench players, and even starters, take as much pride in their defense as they do in their offense, and this is making the game better, though maybe a little bit less interesting.
    One player and team that all this is related to is obviously Lebron James and the Miami Heat. Lebron has faced much criticism about his late game inability to score, but I credit the opposing defenses for this more than I believe Lebron is at fault. One thing that nobody talks about is (with the exception of last year’s finals, yes I know that it is a huge exception) the Heat play great defense at the end of games. If they have a lead with 30 seconds left and the opposing team has the ball, you can bet that they will not score. Lebron has not backed away from playing defense in the last minute, even though he has sometimes looked a bit timid on offense.
    Another example I would like to look at is game 4 between the L.A. Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies were trailing for most of the game, but the score was tied with 20 seconds left and the Clippers had the ball. Chris Paul, to this point in the game, had been able to score at will and do just about whatever he wanted. He was even leading the team in rebounding. So why was it so difficult for him to score here? The answer to that is because of the clock. In a tie game when the shot clock is turned off, the opposing defense knows that the offense wants to shoot with as close to no time remaining as possible to prevent the defense from getting the ball back with an opportunity to win the game. If the offense wants to set up this situation where the worst-case scenario is overtime, their options are very limited. Everyone in the Staples Center knew that Chris Paul was going to be shooting the ball at the end, so this created a very easy situation for the Memphis Grizzlies defensively. All they had to do was wait until about 5 seconds were left on the clock, and then surprise Paul with a double team. He then turned the ball over and the game went to overtime. If there had been 40, or even 30 seconds left on the clock when the Clippers had the ball, they could have actually ran a play and gotten off a very good shot.
    So what I will propose to coaches all over the NBA is this: when your team has the ball in a tie game with the shot clock turned off, don’t be afraid to shoot before the clock strikes 0:00. Take advantage of your possession, and run a normal play which gets your team the best shot possible. If you execute your play correctly, you will have the lead with under 20 seconds remaining and your team on defense. All the pressure is now on the opposing offense, and it is unlikely that they will be able to score against your 5 best defenders.

    The 76ers, fueled by their emphatic win against the Bulls will not only defeat the Celtics, led by the boss Spencer Hawes averaging a Jordan-esque 26.6 points per contest, but will take Miami to seven games in the ECF.

    Unable to contain such a beast, Chris Bosh will be benched late in game seven by Coach Spo, leading to the full emergence of Udonis Haslem. A double-double of 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks would be the only way to contain Hawes, and the Heat are back in the NBA finals.

    Also, I apologize for that being too realistic, we can all see that happening, right?

It will be a good series but the talented Miami Heat will knock of the Spurs in 6 getting LeBron his very first ring.

    How about the Nuggets? Let’s say they beat the Lakers and then move onto the 2nd round against OKC. That’s no crazy thing, it can happen. But what if the Thunder gets beat too? I’m not a friend of injuries, but it can happen to anyone. So if Durant gets injured and Denver rolls past OKC, they’ll find themselves in the Conference Finals against Memphis. (Now that’d be pretty crazy, wouldn’t it?) They handle the Grizzlies pretty well, shoot some three pointers and fight their way to the Finals. On the other side Boston beats Miami and gets ready to go up against Denver. The series will get long, there won’t be a winner in six games but in the seventh the Nuggets will rise up and shock the world… How you like that? Haha, call me crazy but I do believe in miracles!

    Bold Playoff prediction? Let’s see, I’m going out on a limb and saying Philly beats Boston in 7. Lou Williams has been in a shooting slump and is bound to breakout soon. Jrue Holiday should give some problems to Rondo.
    Another playoff prediction, I’m going to say the Denver Nuggets take gave 7 against the Lakers! They’ve got some great ingredients, youth, talent, and depth.
    Finally, I’m thinking of a OKC-Heat Finals match. It could honestly go either way but I think the Heat will take it in 6…

    The oklahoma city will not make it to the nba finals. They are a very talented young team having an incredible year led by KD and Westbrook. However, I believe that will be their downfall. Theyre too young. I believe the thunder are.going to have trouble overcoming the lakers and if they do somehow the spurs will handle business. Okc has trouble scoring in the half court, so when the lakers and/or spurs slow the game down, especially because its the playoffs where the court shrinks, durant and westbrook will fail to lead their team to victory. Dirant doesnt have a lot of moves besides a pull jp long contested jumper and you just have to stay im front of westbrook like kobe did last time they met. Experience wins.

    After the entire Lakers team gets suspended for illicit drug use, the Toronto Raptors will take their place in the Western Conference semi finals, eliminate the Thunder, then proceed to knock off San Antonio in 7. When the Raps meat the Heat in the finals they will in in game 6 after Jose Calderon sends the game into overtime with a buzzer beating 3 pointer. Aaron Gray wins Finals MVP.

    Immediately following game seven of the L.A./Denver series, MWP will celebrate the Laker’s victory by “accidentally” placing Kenneth Faried in a sleeper hold & choking him to death (a la Danny Aiello/Radio Raheem in “Do the Right Thing”) at halfcourt. In the postgame interview, he will claim that he had no idea Faried was standing right in front of him.

    The Memphis Grizzlies will beat the Clippers in game six due to Griffin and CP3′s mobility/knee/ankle issues. Game 7 will go into overtime thanks to a desperation Marc Gasol three pointer. Grizz go on to win the game and the series behind an improbable offensive overtime output by Tony Allen. They face San Antonio in the next round where they provide a clean sweep of the number 1 seed as Randolph and Gasol are too much for the Spurs to handle. This puts them in the Western Conference Finals against the Lakers who squeeze by Denver and then are led my World Peace through the Durant-less Thunder (World Peace gets under him on a jump shot, severely spraining Durant’s ankle). The Grizzlies, able to neutralize Kobe with Tony Allen and the Laker bigs with their own, win the series and go to the Finals where they face the battle-tested Boston Celtics, who have had an improbable road to the Finals as well, defeating the Miami Heat. The Grizzlies extend the series to a seventh game after going down 3-1 but can’t finish it out ending their incredible run to the Finals. David Stern, unimpressed by the entire thing, cites the shortened schedule for what he calls “A cashless Finals” (small market teams winning, LA’s, NYK’s, MIA’s losing) and promises to never had a lockout shortened season again.

    The dever nuggets beat the Lakers after a missed Kobe Bryant FTW buzzer beater in game seven and then beat OKC in a seven game series AND they win from a come from behind and win 4 straight after OKC takes an initial 3-0 series lead. The OKC are an awesome team and ready to win a title. However, Charles Barkley pointed out one of their major flaws. Jumpshots. There’s is a point in every single game I watch where the OKC (meaning russell westbrook) simply settle for just straight jumpshots. I think by game four the nuggets and coach carl will fully exploit this by tightening up their defense and forcing OKC to take to the inside where the Nuggets bigs clash with OKC. I also think that the Nuggets bigs, Mozgov and Magee will have a coming out party and realize a huge part of their potential. Mozgov’s strength and size along with Javale’s length and athleticism. I think they will become key in this series similar to how Jeff Teague had a coming out party when they faced the Bulls last year.

    Indiana Pacers… simple and plain will outright beat the Heat in 6 games, taking their talents to the ECF to face a juggernaught Boston team that just swept the SIXERS. Paul George rises above the rest, after a Heat series that saw him average 15ppg (and locking up DWADE in the closing seconds of every game), and will torch the Celtics to a clip of 23.3 ppg. Somebody will whisper in Hibbert’s ear that KG is old and senile, thus he will manhandle the geriatric into submission. Pacers advance after a back-and-forth 6 game match-up to face the Los Angeles Lakers who just defeated the Thunder, thanks to amazing defensive efforts of World Peace, who is looking to repair his image after The Revenge of Ron Artest. Don’t make Peace angry. The LakeShow and the Pacers go toe-to-toe for a full 7 games where LAL comes out victorious thanks to Pau Gasol’s 28/16/5/4 stat line. World Peace is peaceful again, Gasol’s golden image is back, Bynum can say he played a whole playoff series injury (and injury-causing) free, and Kobe walks away from 2012 tied with the GOAT.

    Eddy Curry will BALL OUT!! After Joel Anthony and Ronny Turiaf go out with season ending injuries (due to the lock-out) the Miami Heat will be forced to play Pittman and Curry. But Curry will transform into the player that recieved a crazy contract from the Knicks (shout out to ZEKE) and average nearly 20 and 10. It wont matter that LeBron can’t make game winners because Eddie Curry will as he demolishes Tim Duncan and the Spurs in the Finals!

Rajon Rondo averages more turnovers that assists, and randomly yells at cameramen for filming him after games, while he wears a ridiculous jacket. Ray Allen shoots the first negative percentage from the field, with his only basket of the series on the Sixers basket. KG has another mysterious knee injury, and Paul Pierce reveals the amount of ice cream cake that he has been eating throughout the Playoffs, and Doc Rivers is forced to start Ryan Hollins, Sean Williams, JaJaun Johnson, E’Twaun Moore, and Greg Steisma, with Hollins at the PG, Steisma at the 2, Johnson at the 3, Williams at the 4 and Moore at the 5.
    They beat the Heat in the ECF 4-1, with the only win for Miami coming on a BS foul call, and Dwayne Wade hits two FTs to put Miami up two to win the game. But, Allen Iverson returns to the Sixers on May 25th, wearing the Reebok Questions in the white/red colorway, and averages 38ppg for the rest of the Playoffs. Next, the Sixers move on to the Finals to face the Denver Nuggets who swept the Thunder, with Timofey Mozgov as a star shooting guard, and JaVale McGee running the point. They defeat the Clippers in the WCF in 7, and in the NBA Finals, with Craig Brackins averaging 25-17 to win Finals MVP and the Sixers win their first title since 1983.

    I predit Boston wins the East with a sweep over the Heat. Boston plays the sixers in the second round which will prepare Boston for the style of play the heat play. Also, KG will play like the young KG in the ECF and put up numbers close to 25 points and 13 boards. The real big three in beantown knows their window of opportunity is pretty much closed after this year and are ready to make another title run. Look at Ray coming off the bench. Double R and P double are ready to double thier title ring total.

But coach spolstra is fired at the end of the season becasue management see’s that he cant coach the big 3 together so heat management decides to hire phil jackson to coach the heat for the 2012-2013 season.
