SLAM 129: On Sale Now!

The time has come.

by Ben Osborne

I’ve said it before, but I think SLAMonline has got the best commenters around. Extremely passionate about basketball, knowledgeable and, for the most part, allergic to the hateful vitriol that fills—and ruins—so many comment sections out there. And of course, nothing gets you guys going like a debate involving LeBron James and Kobe Bryant (see Ryan’s Kobe post in our Top 50 and Lang’s MVP vote post for two examples, and even the Tag Cloud at the bottom of every page, which currently shows Kobe barely leading LeBron, 122-120, in posts on which they’ve been tagged on the site). So a big “thank you” to all for you for helping “make” this cover story happen, as it’s the first to be pretty much completely inspired by what happens here on this site.

My goal for the cover story—which should be on stands in New York today and nationally by this weekend—was to make a sort of print comment section, but with the comments coming from experts, who I planned to have be NBA players with a few journalists thrown in. Like, if a bunch of people who play or cover basketball for a living (besides just our man Kevin Love) came to SLAMonline to comment on the following question: Who is the better player right now?

Our plan suffered a slight bump when a number of NBA folks we asked—players and even national announcers—answered more like this (thanks to my man Jim Poorten for the video)…

But having people basically admit they were scared to upset whoever they didn’t pick didn’t hurt our enthusiasm for the concept; their reticence to make a call only further illustrated what a valid question it is. And we still got some players to talk on the record, as well as popular TV, print and online analysts and many of the best high school players in the country (who answered so seriously; you can tell they study these guys as close as anyone). We went with this comment angle for the story in the magazine because we thought it was the best way to cover something that hasn’t happened yet, and we headlined the story “The Great Debate,” which we came up with before we knew of either the cool Vitamin Water campaign or the ESPN/NBA TV production of the same title I hear will be airing any day now.

The cover line, “Let’s Get it On,” alludes to how, regardless of the way we package this thing in the magazine, the time is right to settle this on the court. I don’t just think Cavs-Lakers is “meant to be” in the is-the-NBA-in-cahoots-with-ABC-to-make-this-happen? sense (though it is that, too), but that the time is exactly right to see these guys go head to head for a couple titles (the League’s championship, as well as the unofficial Best Player in the Game honor). Which leads to the other rationale: the time for this cover was pretty much now or never. Before this season, LeBron was still an indifferent defender. Meanwhile, after this season, it’s fair to expect some slippage from Kobe as his body continues to absorb punishment. Yes—LeBron will probably get better and Kobe will still be amazing. But they will probably not ever be as close to their respective peaks at the same time as they are at this very moment. I don’t even know what part of me wants to see this more: the fan or the editor. And, from a business sense, despite the ad campaigns that are starting to brew and the debate that has raged in this corner of cyberspace for more than a year, we’re actually still early with this cover. But that won’t last. I expect the second these two clinch their spots in the Finals we’ll be seeing them on more covers than Barack Obama.

The proverbial elephant in the room with this cover, which I talk about in my editor’s letter, is the chance that these two don’t meet in the Finals. I’ve already had some nervous moments (game 1 in L.A. had me sending Lang anxious text messages, and these Nuggets will make things very interesting), but the Cavs and Lakers are still prohibitive favorites and I really don’t foresee having to do something like this again. If I did, as awkward as it would be, the truth is that LeBron and Kobe’s supporters would probably still buy this cover and state their case, but for now I display this with the confidence that it is the right cover, at the right time. Now go buy it!

jk the best all-time is Wilt Chamberlain but when LEBRON retires he will b the best all-time

  • http://Slam.com Lane

Kobe will make the hall of fame and Lebron will have his own hall of fame because he will b so good that everyone in the hall of fame will look like bench warmers. I mean his team is 8-0 in the playoofs and have won every game by double digits.

  • http://Slam.com Lane

LEBRON is like Joe Johnson and Kobe is like Mike Bibby!

  • DJR

At the moment LeBron is performing better than Kobe, and the Cavs are performing better than the Lakers. Kobe has done before what LeBron is doing now in terms of leading his team in nearly all categories – but he doesn’t have to do that now as he has a better supporting cast. If you compare Jordan’s first 6 seasons to LeBron’s – points is no contest, and that’s even with Jordan missing 80% of his second season. Other categories LeBron is leading, including 3pt shots and %. The only way LeBron will have more points than Jordan at the end of his career is by playing more years and deciding not to retire…twice. BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO DECIDE WHO IS BETTER, THEY PLAYED AT DIFFERENT TIMES, IN DIFFERENT LEAGUES.

  • Double J

    IT’S KOBE VS LEBRON!

  • Double J

    IT’S KOBE VS LEBRON!

  • Rashaan

why do we always have to compare about who is better? why cant we just acccept that these 2 are @ the top of their games. let us enjoy what these 2 are doing right now. before you know kobe will be gone and we will say we miss kobe. please stop comparing bron 2 mj, he has a long way to go and kobe will never be mike.

  • stokesey

    Cover is rediculously good!!! Niiiiice

  • http://slamonline.com Nw09

I hate that these two have to be compared all of the time. Kobe is in his prime he was doing the same thing as LeBron in his 20′s but on a championship team and it’s hard to get your numbers when you’re surrounded by a team full of Hall of Famers. Kobe is also still playing great ball on into his latter years.

This argument would be better if both Kobe and LeBron were 24 or 30 years old. People need to stop comparing Kobe to Mj, he’s not going to be MJ and this is coming from a Kobe fan.

And people really need to stop compaing LeBron to MJ he hasn’t even reached the prime of his career yet, and we have to see will he be able to substain until his latter years to be even mentioned in the same breath. Also his style of play is NOTHING like Mj even his GM said that.

Let MJ be, let Kobe be and let LeBron be and let’s just enjoy them.

  • http://slamonline.com Nw09

And some of you are jumping ahead predicting LeBron’s career you all don’t know if he’ll substain into his latter years playing at this level. Alot of superstars fade especially the one’s with bigger bodies and the one’s coming into the league so early. Also Kobe is all banged up and beat up and still performing well that’s hard to do.

And for some saying Kobe is too old, Kobe is 30 not 50, MJ didn’t win his first title until he was nearing 30.

Ra(Y)Mon Sessions article I’m imagining in a mixtape-like artistic format(just play easily off the surname Sessions, “The Ramon Sessions” sorry “underground king” with RawLew), like the Deron Williams was like a Jazz LP format, play on an actual title Giant Steps. I’ve found fault in BET before, but no problem with his #1 spot, although the problem is possibly with Juks is making the list and AllenP said he’s perm. in the idiot corner and sends others to Jukai’s corner (of all caps insane satire backfire breakdowns). So not a surprise AllenP wasn’t mentioned on Jukai’s list. Maybe the China correspond-AlanP gets in that list in his place.

  • truthteller

    Lane,
Do you realise that the Pistons and the Hawks are garbage? Do you really want to compare the Pistons and Hawks to the Jazz and the Rockets? Calm down man. I understand you’re a Lebron fan but you might want to wipe your mouth from those LeBron cum stains and chill out.

  • truthteller

Nw09, actually we should be comparing LeBron to MJ (Magic Johnson). LeBron’s game is more Magic than Mike.

  • Jazz Man

LET’S PUT THIS TO BED….1st Jordan played in a era where everyone on the team including the last man on the bench. I’m a Kobe supporter to the fullest, but Kobe wouldn’t have been given the time to get better in that era let alone Lebron. Mid 80′s-Early 90′s would have eaten Lebron alive because of his non-existant consistant jump shot. Kobe is a better player because he understands the game. If Lebron gets that under his belt he’ll be 1 of the greatest. But taking the G.O.D. title from Jordan will never happen. The era’s are way to different. Back then all skill, now to many position players without knowledge and all around game. Minus a few great players the nba is more of the Neigborhood Basketball Association. And we wonder why the gap is almost gone between us and international players. They practice everything we practice by position. But just like when Jordan(GOD) was playing it wasn’t fair to compare those to the King on the throne, its not fair to put Lebron(Prince James) in comparison to Kobe(King)who is on the throne.

  • Black Mamba

Compare these 2 to Mike when they have 6 rings/6 final mvps, until then its no contest. Michael Jordan is bar none the best.

  • SWIFT FROM COMPTON

i’m gonna agree with black mamba, you can’t put kobe or lebron in jordan’s league right now because for one: when jordan got the finals he never lost (kobe 2, lebron 1) and second: kobe has three rings with shaq as the captain, now he has to get his own as the leader (i don’t care if he was the number 2 guy, cause robert horry has 5 rings but no one cares). in my thought i think lebron is gonna get really close but no cigar because when jordan was doing his thing he’s the one that put basketball on the map, so if it’s already on the map all you can do now is show your skills.

To Lane: Thank you, you said what I’ve been trying to tell people for the longest. Lebron is playing against inferior competition in a weak conference of course he’s going to look good doing it, if the Cavs were to play the Rockets it would have went to a 7 game series nah the Cavs would have lost, if the cavs had played the Jazz THAT series would have been a 7 game series, so to compare the success that Lebron is having to Kobe’s team it’s a bit unfair because Kobe is facing far better competition where as Lebron is playing against subpar talented teams so there can’t be any comparisons

I’m sick of this whole…LeBron is playing against inferior competition business… he gets to play against EVERY team in a season….and I cant find any stat lines showing that he gets shut down by western conference teams….

  • Peter

Lebron is a player with tremendous ability, but I honestly do wonder why he is so popular, his game lacks the finese and grace that kobe, mj and wade possess, his jump shot is hideous, he has about 3 different dunks and even they look the same, for these reasons I’ll never be a true lebron james fan but I’ll definitely respect his game.

  • Justin

kobe better by far than lebron he shoots better and has more finese to his game but lebron is really good

  • h-bomb

I am a kobe fanatic but I got props for LeBron. He is just an unbelievable specimen. I really hope this match-up goes down in the finals, so that we can find out who makes their team better. Because in reality it will come down to the players around them.

  • h-bomb

This reminds me of the time when Jordan went against Drexler. At that time they were 1 and 2 but as Bob Costas pot it Drexler was closer to numbers 3,4,5,and 6 than to number 1 as Jordan was. Who will be the next Drexler??????

  • Peter B

Neither kobe nor lebron are drexler. If they meet in the finals it will be the most high profile finals match up since jordan went up against magic in 91. Two players this talented don’t come along very often, we should appreciate this rivarly, it could be the best since magic and bird.

  • Cornbred

After watching the Lakers tonight I don’t think we’ll see a Cavs Lakers final. Is it too late to make some Lebron/Denver commercials.

  • Joe_Sixpack

Kobe is the best though and lebron only has one dunk and a hideous looking jumpshot

  • J.Gamble

People, i assume, are going to pick the individual they like more. You can’t blame the NBA for being a business all you Kobe lovers. Kobe is older, slower, his knees are rickety and he has been playin with broken fingers and a ton of heart over the past few years. People keep saying Kobe has more talent than LeBron, but when was winning in the NBA ever based on purely talent. Those great Trailblazer teams with Drexler never won, the Suns teams with Barkley and a plethora of stars never won. And The Lakers with four future Hall-of-Famers, allowed ego and a brewing internal battle between Shaq and Kobe, to bring a dynasty to an end, and make Joe Dumars idiotic draft [or non-draft] of Carmelo look like at least a bearable move because the Pistons benefitted from that fairy tale.

LeBron is the new Golden Boy of the league. It doesn’t benefit the NBA anymore to see Kobe win another chip. Stern would prefer the changing of the guard begin this season, and I’m sure Cleveland will have the unwavering support of the refs, the commisioner, the fans and the league alike. The NBA has always been like this, almost scripted at times. When Gasol is playing like a clueless, empty oak tree and Odom is wandering around like he just smoked five blunts of piff, and noone on the team wants to take a big shot — what do you want Kobe to do, score 81 again ? In the playoffs, they would break both of Kobe’s legs before he was allowed to score 81, same for Jordan. Each player has to be appreciated in his own time frame and era. I am one of the few people who belive that Kobe’s legacy may be fulfilled already — three chips, in the league at 17, greatest combo scorer-defender since Jordan and a sure-fire Hall-of-Famer. Not a bad resume. Hey, the game has changed since Mike dominated and teh league has more parity. Maybe Kobe has acheived as much as he was going to under the circumstances. Let’s appreciate him for what he has meant to the game. I never even liked Kobe teh first 10 years of his career , but I was one of those people dumb enuff to believe that Shaq WAS THE GOOD GUY AND kOBE WAS THE BAD GUY. No, Kobe was the young guy. He was also cokcy liek Shaq and he knew he was just as good. It took him a while to understand the POLITICS of the NBA and defer to Shaq. It isn’t an obvious deferring such as in a game, let Shaq take the winning shot. It was a media and fan thing, where Kobe had to exhibit some type of obvious acceptance and express understanding that Shaq was the man. Deep down I am sure tha Kobe feels like Shaq qouldn’t have won those itles without him.

When peopl ekeep saying Shaq won A TITLE without Kobe and Kobe never won without Shaq, answer me this question. Who are the top three players in the NBA ? Kobe, Bron and Wade, right ? Well, if Tim Duncan went to the Lakers after Shaq left what would have become of the Lakers ? Probably three more chips,. right..Shaq went from playing with the best guard A in the game to playing with the best guard B in the game..not much changed for Shaq he went from Kobe-Wade. Kobe went from Shaq to ????????????????? These debates are just what they are and that’s why we love them..but in you rown mind Kobe needs to win a title to i guess be considered “as good as Jordan”. He’s already proved his worth as one of the top 10 players all -time. And the boy can shoot freethrows, which is crucial to the game.

check my story on phife dawg page 36 this issue…..peace

If Lebron wins at least 5 rings then he might be better than MJ. If not forget all those triple doubles etc. Championships will only determine if Lebron or any other player is better than Jordan PERIOD. And they should at least wear those SWOOSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

LeBron surpasses Kobe as the top player: Jerry West

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – LeBron James is the best player in the NBA, surpassing veteran Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, 14-times All-Star guard Jerry West said Monday.

West, a shrewd judge of talent who brought Bryant to the Lakers when he was their general manager, said the Cleveland forward could become the league’s next Michael Jordan.

  • Amin Ash

Whoo….it took me 2 minutes just to scroll down to end of the page. I have to go with Kobe as the best player at the moment. But, King James have the POTENTIAL to be better than Kobe in the near future. So, just relax and watch these 2 superstars duke it out on the biggest stage of ‘em all..the FINAL!! Nice cover though.

  • Amin Ash
