SLAM 150: On Sale Now!

A special cover for a special issue.

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

cover shot by Clay Patrick McBride

Look at the cover. Now look back here. Now back at the cover. Now back here.

That’s right.

For our 150th issue, a milestone by any magazine measure, we discussed a slew of big names—current and retired—but ultimately elected to feature Allen Iverson on the cover.

Why, you may ask? Why feature a team-less 36-year-old (happy birthday, Allen!) front and center? Why feature a man who some say is broken, beaten and has no ball left in his future? Why feature a man whose reputation has been pulverized beyond recognition since he last played in the NBA in 2010.

The answer is textbook stuff—at least according to our school of thought. It’s not about his past. It’s not about his present. It’s not about his future. It’s about the sum of all three.

Past. Over the course of our first 17 years and 150 issues, Allen Iverson was inarguably one of the best and most entertaining players in the League. From his 24,368 points to his 5,624 assists, Iverson demanded double-teams—and fans’ attention. And while, sadly, the internet has boiled him down to simply a practice parody, we still remember the fully formed Allen Iverson. The bundle of emotion, energy and highlights. For all of that, respect due.

Present. Take a look around the 2011 NBA Playoffs. From the exposed tats, to the hairstyles, to the unfettered emotional outbursts, to the ways players carry themselves, it’s clear that Allen Iverson’s influence still permeates the League. Heck, it’d be fair to say that during SLAM’s lifetime, no player has had a greater influence on the game and its surrounding culture than Iverson. The youngest of fans may not know this, but AI birthed a generation of clones—many of whom now populate the NBA.  For all of that—for LeBron and Derrick and Dwyane—respect due.

Future. For all of his college and NBA life, we’ve provided Allen with a platform to tell his tale. Now, just because the ball’s temporarily stopped bouncing doesn’t mean we’ve confiscated the microphone, taken the podium and turned the lights off on him. We’re still riding with the Answer. Maybe now more than ever, we want to know what Iverson is up to. What rumors are bogus, and what the truth is. What he’s currently doing, and what he plans for the future. So we hit Iverson up for one more conversation…and he obliged, providing us with one of the realest Q+As he’s ever sat down for. For all of that, respect due.

As for the cover itself, fab. If you’ve got beef with it, stick to the burger business. At 150 issues deep, our covers are still the baddest and boldest on newsstands, and they’re only getting better. As always, all praise due to Dennis, Ben, Melissa and Susan for conceptualizing, debating, executing and fine-tuning.

Deciding on Allen and designing the cover were relatively easy when compared with actually getting up with the Answer. A chance meeting at a Playoff game in Boston, hella phone conversations and innumerable texts with Gary Moore finally brought it to fruition. Props to him and his whole team at Moore Management and Entertainment LLC for their full support. We see what you’re building over there.

Luckily for us, the rest of this special keepsake issue was a little easier to put together. Luckily for you, “easy” in this case equals dope. Between features on Jamal Crawford and the Memphis Grizzlies, the first 150 point game in history and the 1991 Chicago Bulls, we’ve got pages upon pages of goodness. Throw in a timely poster, 150 of SLAM’s best memories and a dash of the usual college and high school coverage, and No. 150 turned out even better than we could’ve expected.

Look for this issue on newsstands next week (we dropped it today, a few days early, in honor of AI’s 36th born day), and look for Iverson to begin the official, public portion of his NBA comeback July 16 in Greensboro, at Camp Crossover’s celebrity game.

Happy, happy 36th to him, and 150th to us.

Jokes on you, we still alive. Thanks for sticking with us, fam.

great job SLAM!!!!!!! <3 this cover!

  • Greg

No trying to hate, but I feel like 150 deserves more than an outtake of a cover true fans already have.

So, so great. Respect to Ben, Melissa, Susan and Tzvi. Killed both the cover and the cover story. Incredible.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Yeah, damn homie, you got me.
I’m so insecure, that’s why I’m not a fan of AI.
    Dumbass.
Who the f*ck are you anyways?
@Allenp, Eboy & airs – yeah, I know I’m in the minority here.
For the record, I love his game, his game was sick, I mean, I’m a little dude myself, how am I not gonna love the way he made cats way taller than him look like fools on the court?
It was the other BS I never liked about him.
I could go on, but it ain’t about that right now.
SLAM chose someone they’ve been down with and who has been down with them since waaaay back to grace their 150th cover, and I’m not hating on that one bit.

    Anthony went there!
    LOL, I’ma fall back…but damn…shots fired!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nobody is going to entertain that nonsense.

  • DyingThrasher

Why put a recycled picture of someone who nobody has thought about in the last year for such an important issue when there are so many great players/stories right now? He could have helped out the Grizz this year in the playoffs but instead acted like a childish baby when they were struggling and abandoned them. Hope he doesn’t make it back to the NBA, it would be as pathetic as the Antoine Walker’s comeback attempt, so sad

  • http://Slamonline BossTerry

    Best cover ever…

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

I do like this cover more than the classic “Soul on Ice” cover.

  • JD

whilst the cover does look pretty sweet, i think that slam needs to move on from AI, he’s way past his best and will probably never get back into the league again, a nice q+a somewhere in the mag, but a cover?no.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

this dying thrasher person is funny. Iverson dipped out Memphis 2 years ago, and the only reason he fell outta the league is cuz he was unwilling to play a role player/off the bench type role. So if he’s willing to do it now, there is no reason to think he (a much much much much much much better player then antoine walker) could make some kind of successful comeback.

  • rob stewart

And today is Allen Iverson’s birthday, no lie

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

This is so real and full of hip hop culture…

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

@rob stewart: a big reason why we pushed this today as opposed to thursday/friday when issue will really start showing up in stores…

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Thanks for all the great comments, everyone. It really is a dope issue from front to back.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    It’s also Prince’s birthday.
    Game.
    Blouse.

  • Sean

We’ve seen this time and again, SLAM is far to self-aware these days. In fact, most of this has already been done in the 10th anniversary collectors issue, come on SLAM, the only magazine that has its own ‘era.’ Get over yourselves.

  • John Wall Jr

    Great Cover!
    someone Answer NicQ please
    thanks

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

LMAO @Rigo – And prince and AI share a birthday? i’m not surprised.

  • BmaC

Definitely not an AI fan, he shot took much and made too little. Played with a lot of Iversons and lost a lot because of these Iversons. If you hitting 20-30% of your shots, you need to pass the rock. I do give him credit though for that 2001 finals run, that 76er team was today’s cavaliers without lebron. Eric Snow, Aaron Mckie, George lynch, Tyrone Hill. what team could they start for today? That was the one and only team that he could do his thing on, once he moved around or played with new pieces he keep doing the same thing and the low shooting % caught up with him. He’d still be playing today if he really became a point guard. You can’t be a 6’0 shooting guard who can’t blow by people anymore or guard either guard on defense. The guy did maximize his part as a poster boy for the hip hop culture, good and bad, giving him his high level of popularity among that segment. He essentially was the 2001 bad boy version of Derek Rose before the 2011 version won the MVP.

  • andrew

    SO PROUD

  • MikeC.

In the immortal words of the brother named Common Sense: if I don’t like it, I don’t like it. It don’t mean I’m hatin’”.
I just don’t get the fuss over AI. He could have done much more than one Finals run in his career. People worship this cat like he actually did something. He has exactly as many NBA championships as I do.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Iverson never shot 20 or 30 percent.
Actually pull up his stats. His rookie year he had a bad percentage, one of the worst of his career.
Second year he put up 22 and 7 on like 44 or 45 percent from the field.
However, in his third year he got moved to the two on a team devoid of offensive talent and was encouraged to hoist them up at an alarming rate. He was typically between 40 and 43 percent during that time span.
Then he got moved back to the one, and put up 30 and 7 in consecutive seasons at the point and saw his shooting percentage rise.
He moved to Denver, put up 26 and 7 on 45 percent shooting. For perspective, those are pretty much Derrick Rose’s numbers for his MVP season minus the wins.
Iverson failed at winning championships. So did a lot of cats. If the only players worthy of “worship” or those who won championships, then there are a lot of unworthy bastards being worshiped.

  • http://Slamonline BossTerry

Damn, Anthony.. REALLY?????? Maybe a better dribbler, but thats about it.. (Not taking anything away from AI)

I wonder when this issue hits the stands in Europe.
Thank you once again, for the best sportsmagazine in the world.

  • bigwavedaveg

Only true NBA fans understand this cover. This cover represents the love for the game, just like Iverson always has. Anyone who can’t comprehend the beauty of this cover is simply blind. Allen created more excitement for Nba fans than almost every current NBA player, except maybe the current top ten, and that’s arguable. So what, he made a couple mistakes, his heart is trapped in the game. Ones passions sometime gets the best of them, but he always did what his job title way; play like an NBA All-Star. Happy B-day AI. Hope to see you back in the league next year, it needs your heart. Mad-props to SLAM for this one. This is not coming from an AI fan, just someone who appreciates witnessing maximum effort to win. Reppin from Hawaii!!!!

  • MikeC.

@Allenp – I have to clarify. I had something like this posted on the Q+A thread before it disappeared into the abyss. Repsect due to past accomplishments, but people are acting like he’s going to come back and light it up again and play like it’s 2001. Dude is 36 with arthritic knees. He relies entirely on speed and athleticism to do what he does. In very short minutes, I think he has an outside shot of being a change of pace backup PG/SG. In the Q+A, he mentioned that he only wants to play if he can do what he does. Doesn’t sound like a guy willing to play the bench and sometimes not play at all when the matchups aren’t right. If I were a GM, I wouldn’t touch this guy with someone else’s 10 foot pole. What’s the point? 1 season? Maybe 2 (IF his body holds up and IF he accepts the role)? I’d rather have a young prospect develop. Too many chances given and too many opportunities blown. People say he doesn’t get a fair shake because of who he is. I think he’s received too many chances that others didn’t get because of who he is. He had his time and chose to squander his prime by not practicing and taking care of his body. Now that he says he “gets it”, he deserves another chance? No way. Welcome to the real world, where if you are disrespectful, immature and outright foolish, you simply run out of chances. I actually feel sorry for AI. He might actually “get it” now, but it’s too late. Kinda like the guy who realizes he should stop cheating on his wife, but only after she leaves him because he gave her herpes.

I nodded my head in agreement through most of MikeC’s post.
Then laughed my a$$ off at that last sentence..

    Dope Cover happy Birthday AI.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

    What happened to the Q+A??

  • ai come back

is this gonna go to subscribers too?? or is this one of those specials that you have to buy seperately? also SICK COVER AIS gonna come back just wait

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jay

Love it! AI still got it hopefully he replaces Mike Bibby in Miami next season and gets that ring… that would be the best fit I hope Miami loses this year and AI signs has a big Finals in 2012 and gets his that would be epic. GET THAT Q+A working?

  • MikeC.

@Jay – I think the earlier posting of the Q+A must have been made public in error. I think that was the actual article from the magazine that just hit stores.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

Yeah I think that was a big . Oh well  happens.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

This Cover is AMAZING… NBA TV showed Game 1 of the 2001 finals last night and i forgot how amazing this guy really was. I miss him

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ KB8

IT DOESN’T Get MUCH BETTER THAN THIS!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

AI on the Heat would be the best fit at this point.

  • http://www.thescore.com/tbj Holly MacKenzie

My heart. 150 for SLAM. Without you so many of us wouldn’t be here, writing, talking, typing ball for a living. Without Allen I. we probably wouldn’t love certain players the same way, knowing how to appreciate those specific characteristics and skills and emotions that he gave us in a way that was so uniquely him. Genuine. True. For better or worse, through thick and thin, SLAM and Iverson will always be connected in my mind and heart. Thanks SLAM, thanks Allen and thank you Tzvi, for this. Beautiful, beautiful cover.

    Congrats SLAM!
@ali – Canada Post is on strike, but this is a special issue so you have to cop it on the newsstands.
