SLAM 150: On Sale Now!

A special cover for a special issue.

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

cover shot by Clay Patrick McBride

Look at the cover. Now look back here. Now back at the cover. Now back here.

That’s right.

For our 150th issue, a milestone by any magazine measure, we discussed a slew of big names—current and retired—but ultimately elected to feature Allen Iverson on the cover.

Why, you may ask? Why feature a team-less 36-year-old (happy birthday, Allen!) front and center? Why feature a man who some say is broken, beaten and has no ball left in his future? Why feature a man whose reputation has been pulverized beyond recognition since he last played in the NBA in 2010.

The answer is textbook stuff—at least according to our school of thought. It’s not about his past. It’s not about his present. It’s not about his future. It’s about the sum of all three.

Past. Over the course of our first 17 years and 150 issues, Allen Iverson was inarguably one of the best and most entertaining players in the League. From his 24,368 points to his 5,624 assists, Iverson demanded double-teams—and fans’ attention. And while, sadly, the internet has boiled him down to simply a practice parody, we still remember the fully formed Allen Iverson. The bundle of emotion, energy and highlights. For all of that, respect due.

Present. Take a look around the 2011 NBA Playoffs. From the exposed tats, to the hairstyles, to the unfettered emotional outbursts, to the ways players carry themselves, it’s clear that Allen Iverson’s influence still permeates the League. Heck, it’d be fair to say that during SLAM’s lifetime, no player has had a greater influence on the game and its surrounding culture than Iverson. The youngest of fans may not know this, but AI birthed a generation of clones—many of whom now populate the NBA.  For all of that—for LeBron and Derrick and Dwyane—respect due.

Future. For all of his college and NBA life, we’ve provided Allen with a platform to tell his tale. Now, just because the ball’s temporarily stopped bouncing doesn’t mean we’ve confiscated the microphone, taken the podium and turned the lights off on him. We’re still riding with the Answer. Maybe now more than ever, we want to know what Iverson is up to. What rumors are bogus, and what the truth is. What he’s currently doing, and what he plans for the future. So we hit Iverson up for one more conversation…and he obliged, providing us with one of the realest Q+As he’s ever sat down for. For all of that, respect due.

As for the cover itself, fab. If you’ve got beef with it, stick to the burger business. At 150 issues deep, our covers are still the baddest and boldest on newsstands, and they’re only getting better. As always, all praise due to Dennis, Ben, Melissa and Susan for conceptualizing, debating, executing and fine-tuning.

Deciding on Allen and designing the cover were relatively easy when compared with actually getting up with the Answer. A chance meeting at a Playoff game in Boston, hella phone conversations and innumerable texts with Gary Moore finally brought it to fruition. Props to him and his whole team at Moore Management and Entertainment LLC for their full support. We see what you’re building over there.

Luckily for us, the rest of this special keepsake issue was a little easier to put together. Luckily for you, “easy” in this case equals dope. Between features on Jamal Crawford and the Memphis Grizzlies, the first 150 point game in history and the 1991 Chicago Bulls, we’ve got pages upon pages of goodness. Throw in a timely poster, 150 of SLAM’s best memories and a dash of the usual college and high school coverage, and No. 150 turned out even better than we could’ve expected.

Look for this issue on newsstands next week (we dropped it today, a few days early, in honor of AI’s 36th born day), and look for Iverson to begin the official, public portion of his NBA comeback July 16 in Greensboro, at Camp Crossover’s celebrity game.

Happy, happy 36th to him, and 150th to us.

Jokes on you, we still alive. Thanks for sticking with us, fam.

MJ had the biggest Will, but A.I. had the biggest Heart…Great Job SLAM!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Tracy

The most INFLUENTIAL player of this generation, he brought hip hop culture to the nba and he just didnt give a f^ck. That’s why so many people love and idolize him.

  • http://www.eric32woodyard.wordpress.com Eric Woodyard

    I love it!!

Marvelous cover, and here’s hoping for 150 more issues, slam. Now, I have a somewhat negative opinion towards AI, but I won’t voice it here cus it’s pretty irrelevant. What I like is the slamfam sticking with the dude like they always have and holding it down for him when everyone else was cussing him out. Respect due? Respect given.

  • Ryan

Thank you, SLAM, for always giving AI some love. I hope the Philippine edition arrives soon!

I subscribed to your mag today, I loved your article on Larry Brown, he is such a bullS**&^ with A.I., Larry played A.I., Larry never respected A.I. because A.I. dressed like himself, so Larry just put all Allen’s business in the news, never called him Allen but “the kid” put us on his back, all that crap, never consulted A.I., told when A.I. would miss a practice, what kind of coach is that, and lastly stop saying that Brown took the Pistons to the Playoff, check the RECORD, The pistons was winning, in place, half through when Brown got himself, (golddigger as you say) switched to the Pistons so that he (Brown) could get a NBA title to his RESUME, Brown is rotten. He did not have nothing to do with the pistons players, in fact had Brown made changes they might not have won, Brown knew someone that helped him into that position, that was the Piston’s year, and Brown jumped on the bandwagon, check it out, lastly,A reporter asked Brown after a game when A.I. had bout 12 Steals in one night and Brown snapped “I AN’T INTO STEALS” that was when he was angry with allen and in one of his sissy fits, Brown was never a friend, but a user, a golddigger,.thus that is where the rant “practice, we talking bout practice” what A.I. meant was if Phil Jackson knew Magic or Kobe missed practice DO YOU THINK PHIL TOLD THE MEDIA??? no, Brown never game allen the respect, and got all those broke down players, Jealous C.Webber, and other has been, with no help, this man ALLEN EZAIL ALLEN played his heart out, and all the sixers management did was treat him like “the little kid”, I hate the sixers yea, hate them, that whole franchise mistreated allen, all he wanted was the respect he deserved, but because he did not like suits, haircuts, and brown did not have the attention he craved, Allen suffered, today I watch his games (got most everyone over ten years, I miss that guy and am glad he is home, he never should have went to Turkey, them people don’t know nothing bout basketball.
keep up the work, love SLAM

@Allenp 11:13 – Your name is usually blue’d and link’d up, so I’m not sure if I’m responding to a name-jacker or not. Anyway, I’m mostly disappointed in the fans that keep trumpeting AI’s cause. I mean, the guy is 36 and has been out of the L for a couple years now. When Stevie Franchise was talking about trying to make a comeback last summer, everyone trashed him and said he was a washed up bum who was holding on to past glory. But AI gets a free pass and everyone pumps up the cause as if he’s been blackballed from the NBA for no reason, while in his athletic prime. There’s a reason little guys don’t last as long as big guys, and AI is a little guy that took a huge amount of punishment. It’s not like he’s coming to my local Y and hopping into a rec league with the rest of us 30 and 40-somethings. He’s gonna have to check Rose, Westbrook, CP, etc. It’s not like he was a great defender in his prime. AI had a pretty high SPG average, but it’s not like he was bodying up his man and locking him down. He was gambling in the passing lanes and getting beat back door when he didn’t get the steal. That’s not going to get any better now that he’s not quick enough to even poach in the gap.
Jeez I feel like the crotchedy old man yelling “stay off my lawn” to the young kids. I’ve seen too many stars hang on past their prime for the right reasons: Rock Richmond hanging on to get a ring with the Lakers, Ewing in a Magic uniform trying to get a ring, Shaq with the Celtics. No serious contender is going to sign AI. I wish it wasn’t true, but his past actions have proven that he’s just too much of a liability and the negatives outweigh the positives when you can’t write it in ink that he’s good for 25 ppg every night.

THOSE PLAYERS IMITATE ALLEN IVERSON SO MUCH, WHEN I SEE BOSH AND LEBROWN JAMES, any player make a point and then OPEN THEIR MOUTH AND SCREAM UP AT THE CEILING, THAT IS ALLEN IVERSON, THEY ALL IMITATE ALLEN, HIS WAYS, HIS GESTURES, THEY CULP THEIR HAND TO THEIR HEAD, OPEN THE MOUTH AND YELL INTO THE ATMOSPHER, THAT IS ALL ALLEN IVERS, THE HEAD BANDS, AND EVEN BRINGING THEIR CHILDREN TO THE POST GAME AFTER A WIN, ALLEN IVERSON WITH HIS SON DUCE WAS THE FIRST, THEN Here come the Celtics with his son, and Jason with his little “big” head boy, they all just hate him because he believe in himself, he is good, and black people, are jealous of each other, there is not love, but He is the best, allen ezail just don’t like dressing up, so Larry Brown and them did not like that, and Larry Wants to be in the news every day, larry would pick fights to get attention and it made allen look bad, when Phill Jackson and Rieilly, never told the public about their franchise player, but larry just blabbed everything late, or miss practice to press, that is what Allen was talking about, who does that……
get more slam out there, check the facts on the Pistons and see that they were IN PLACE, WINNING AND THEN SOMEHOW AFTER HIS OPERATION OR STINT BEING SICK, LARRY BROWN KNEW SOMEONE WHO WANTED TO GIVE LARRY A NBA TITLE ON HIS RESUME AND NEXT THING WE KNEW LARRY WAS COACHING THE ALREADY WINNING PISTONS. SO LARRY GOT CREDIT FOR A TEAM THAT HE (LARRY) DID NOT PUT TOGETHER, DID NOT CHANGE ONE PLAYER, JUST SHOWED UP AND GOT THE RING. CHECK IT OUT.

a more suitable cover couldn’t have been imagined. glad ya’ll stay true to your roots and don’t go two-face like the rest of the media does. AI’s the embodiment of the american dream: a survivor who overcame great obstacles–poverty, racism and despair–to reach the pinnacle of american success. he gave voice and pride to the downtrodden and allowed us to dream…that being said, where’s my issue.

Oh my God. This cover looks so good it’s making me hungry. I need to get a Hershey’s Take 5 or something. Btw, speaking of influence, is it just me or does Tyson Chandler have a tattoo that is IDENTICAL to one of Iverson’s? The one that says (I think) “Only the Strong Survive.”

    The hell you talking about?
    I’m right here!

  • Jake

AI is the greatest scoring guard to ever and i mean ever play the game. He deserves a ring more than anyone for the heart, hustle, and swagg that he showed. He played on more injuries than the whole league put together. If i was a coach in the NBA I’d sign him and play him more than 11-15 min a game. Give him more time and i bet he could still drop 42 with 16 dimes.

  • http://airtsinelas21.blogspot.com Roy

Awesome cover! Can’t wait for this to drop in the Philippines soon….
