Links: Team USA 101, China 70

The Nats open the Olympics with a dominant win…

by Lang Whitaker

So much for a close shave off the bat. In what was perhaps the most-watched basketball game in history, Team USA struggled early against China — Team USA led by just 3, 29-26, midway through the second — but Team USA’s defensive pressure finally wore down China and carried the US to a 101-70 win.

There’s been a lot of talk about Team USA having to adjust to the international style of play — in the NBA, teams generally play from the outside-in, but internationally teams generally play outside-in. China began by playing outside-in, meaning they posted Yao and then waited for him to get doubled and throw it out to open shooters on the outside. And the Chinese shooters were red-hot early on going 5-7 from three in the first 15 minutes.

But the odds caught up with China. As they tired out — poor Yao was clinging to his shorts by the second quarter — Team USA continued hawking the ball and forcing turnovers. Team USA reeled off a 16-3 run just before the half and went into the third quarter leading 49-37. The US then turned it up in the third, winning the quarter 25-11.

China managed to create a couple of highlight plays in the fourth, but one of the human victory cigars (Tayshaun Prince) was already in and the US was nursing a 25-point lead.

China was led by Yao, who finished with 13 and 10, but he was never really dominant and seemed out of gas early on.

For Team USA, it was a solid, steady performance to open the Games. Dwight Howard kept pounding the ball into Yao, creating contact. LeBron ran out over and over again for easy dunks and had three blocked shots, including one ridiculous two-handed snatch from mid-air.

Even Jason Kidd got into the act, creating two steals early on and setting a tone. In fact, all three of Team USA’s point guards were terrific; Deron Williams had his best defensive game in a while and Chris Paul was all over the court on both ends. (NBC’s Doug Collins said that Chris Paul might be the big surprise for Team USA this summer. So it would be a surprise that the guy who almost won the MVP a few months ago is playing well?) We should also single out Chris Bosh, who finished with 9 points and 8 boards.

As a team, the USA forced 18 turnovers on 14 steals, meaning they were successful at turning China’s mistakes into offensive opportunities.

Yet all was not great. Carmelo Anthony was pretty much non-existent, finishing 0-3 from the floor for 3 points in 14 minutes. Kobe was also disappointing, going 1-7 from behind the arc and forcing a couple of shots outside the offense.

China’s strategy of creating outside jumpers worked, but only for a while.

“We didn’t play our best game but we played well,” LeBron said after the game.

And today, playing well was more than enough.

Weeeell, it WAS a nice win, but if the chinese guards had kept up the 3 point shooting (especially their #8) the game would have been much closer. Spain took down Greece by 15 btw, and Linas Kleiza shot down the Gauchos at the buzzer (practically) so the tournament is finally in full swing. Big surprise of the game was how Jason Kidd defended and his passing (no surprise there). He was the catalyst late in the 2nd quarter when the redeemers overran the chinese. D-WADE WAS INCREDIBLE. Two 180 dunks, and lots of nice moves. Lebron and Wade were unguardable. I pity Angola next.

the NBA, teams generally play from the outside-in, but internationally teams generally play outside-in. China began by playing outside-in

  • http://fjsdklf.com Jukai

    probably should change that

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Lebron’s “and one” Alley oop one hander in the second quarter was….. disgusting. Deron trying to stuff on Yao, in traffic, was…. ambitous. Flash doing it all was…oh soooo sweet.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Jukai, the US played inside out in the first few minutes of the game (Dwight had 10 quick ones), then relied on their D to create turnovers and quick points. Three point shooting though was atrocious! at one point early in the game, Team USA was shooting 1 for 12. Yeeesh! Wanna bet Greece is going to pack it into the Zone (Gasol bro’s should be adequate enough to take care of “superman”) and dare the redeemers to make open three’s?

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Oh and i agree, Lang probably should change that line above ;-)

  • Blinguo

“LEBRONINAMANCE!” – Most watched but blacked out on the West Coast, dagnabbit. NBColympics online feed had no commentary and a click clak refresh keyboard button hit sound every 2 seconds. Some other weird feed had the Doug Collins and the good ol’ NBA on NBC theme song going though and it gets replayed at 10 am here I think on TV. Turnovers/Steals and points off as well as the depth of Team USA took down China. Wade putting up nice breakaway dunks again, good to see he’s back to form. Yi had the nerves until late and SLAM contributor Alan Paul sighting in the halftime montage about China’s hoop scene/jersey sales(again!)/Love of Kobe Bean Bryant.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Team USA’s defense was really impressive, especially in the 2nd. Every little slip-up by China led to a fast break layup/dunk in seconds. Very impressive indeed.

BTW, watched Spain last night, and while he didn’t stand out tremendously, you can see the promise in Rubio. He is really slippery with the dribble, and effective creating and finding space with his penetration. He is going to have a lot of problems playing against the USA’s guards, though. Not that that is unexpected or a bad thing.

  • Scott

Was a decent game for the US…..China’s number 5 really likes to carry the ball, but it took a quarter and a half for it to be called

  • http://washedupplayer.blogspot.com/ RiseKing

Yeah, Blinguo, the west coast time delay thing is annoying. It won’t come on NBC for another hour…but thank God we get CBC in the Seatttle area, they carried the game live, even if the commentator was suspect.

  • visca´l barca

If team usa continues to play like this, they´ll never win the gold medal. In the first half ,they only scored with dunks. Against teams like spain , greece and argenitna they will not be able create that many turnovers. Not until way in the third, already having a comfortable lead, did they start to hit their shots. They also profited from the weak chinese point guard who wasn´t able to get the ball to yao and from jianlians awful performance. Spain clearly is the no.1 favorite. They´ll beat the US 82-76

  • http://washedupplayer.blogspot.com/ RiseKing

Another thing, I like how the US takes chances on defense, but the sure did give China a ton of open looks from outside. They cooled off after the 1st quarter, but a team with better guards may be able to expose their “D”. Also, somebody besides Michael Redd has to be a consistent outside threat. These teams are just gonna start packing it in and daring the Americans to shoot.

  • http://pretendingtohaveanownwebsite.com Art Vendelay

Well….I was sitting there and thought about that game…I mean, if you win by 30, you must have done something right…BUT I wonder where the redeemers lost their range they showed in the preparation games…at least, Michael Redd nailed some 3s…
So, some room to improve (at the beginning, they didn’t seem very focussed, they had some 3s against them, which will be even more used by really good shooters like Spain and Greece have)…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Nice that no one pointed out Wade being perfect from the field and the free throw line.

  • http://washedupplayer.blogspot.com/ RiseKing

Wade’s role on this team is perfect. The fact that he’s healthy, fearless, and aggressively attacking the tin on the regular has been awesome, and pleasantly surprising.

  • http://nba.com GermanMavsFan

Goood game loved Yi Jilian’s(sp)put back dunk over Melo, that was sick. Wish china woulda won though, lol.

  • http://myspace.com Bryan

Nice to finally comment from a sidekick. That was a good game, wade looked awesome …we have to do a better job of pressuring shooters because other teams are going to make us for doubling down low. Like Spain for example. And the size difference may be troubling later against a more experienced team. All in all I like what I see.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Have i mentioned lately that i luv me some Flash? It is soooooo great seeing Wade dominate (no other word for it), and from the bench no less. Go Flash.

  • Brian

How is it that this game wasn’t dominated by one sided calls given that the US was playing China in China? So much for the, ‘Oh, you can’t blame the NBA refs – they’re only human and naturally react to the crowd’ excuse you hear to justify their incompetence.

  • Sparker

    go croatia

  • Phil Dailey

Top this ,let’s see if you gotz the wind to keep up, that was what it looked like to me pressure up front let them shoot from out front but push da rock like they did then crush it home & they did , now comes the next test whom ever that is same as be-fore now more intense, nextime round, aint on their strap yet, just show what we have to keep it boutime from “92″.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Earl “E.Sneed” Sneed

Bron Bron defense is crazy right now! But they need more outside shooting…someone tell Kobe to step in or penetrate because the 3s aren’t fallin’

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Dwyane Wade knows it’s dunks and layups for the win! :-)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Earl “E.Sneed” Sneed

Eventual teams are going to pack down on the lane though and those shots will have to fall!

  • riggs

    @ phil:

    ………..what?!

  • http://firemitchkupchak.com Reggie Evans

    Kobe helped the team win.

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero Dma

i cant decide who i hate more on this team, boozer or prince.

  • John

I think Rip Hamilton would be perfect for this team. He would kill it from 3 and create shots by moving around

  • tinchek

when your opponents start playing d and keep shooting there’s no way you’re gonna get an easy win. almost every basket usa made was layup or dunk. cmon…

  • tinchek

go croatia! that’s the way sparker:P

  • Emphasis

Good win, but Spain easily beat a tough Greek team. Just watch out for the Spanish…

  • Orion

Kind of hard for Kobe to be dissapointing seeing as he had 5 or 6 dunks in this game guy. The outside wasn’t falling so he just started bashing the rim.

  • Ken H.

Chairman Yi’s put back on melo’s head was both awesome and hilarious cuz he stank it up to that point. I’m gonna go get my Yi jersey out and rock it all day.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Outside, inside, whatever. It was early.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

eazy yi needs to get consistent

  • Jose

they didnt mention Flash?! well whatever he only had a perfect shooting game and led with 19 points, y’know no big deal

  • http://pretendingtohaveanownwebsite.com Art Vendelay

German tv said Yao’s 2,37 meters (would be around 7’9” or something)…oh, and according to them, Deron and Boozer already match Stockton and Malone…not quite sure about both…

  • bendreizehn

    Right now…Spain over the U.S.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

easy win at the end….but i wish they actually played like an NBA team would and not like if it was an all-star game with spurts of defense. Too many alley oop attempts that weren’t there, getting caught in the air with nowhere to go, still lack of shooting, Redd evenhad some trouble but his late buckets when the game was decided made it look decent.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

and i know Kobe is suppose to be the stopped on this team, but it seems like he’s always cheating on D, so he has to scramble to cover the open shooter at the 3, who always seems to fake and drive around him as Kobe tries to reach around him to poke the ball out. There’s no reason why a team this athletic should be doubling on D so much. Play the passing lanes, but stop leaving shooters open.

  • http://pretendingtohaveanownwebsite.com Art Vendelay

even though I already bashed German tv-commentary, they actually said one thing that wasn’t so wrong: The redeemers occasionally (!!) played like a show team, going just for highlights (it at least looked like that in the beginning)…well, if it’s successful (and nobody tries to stop them), no one’s to blame for that…

  • Boing Dynasty

    Nats…

  • BDubbz

Don’t you think its good that we got practically all our points from layups and dunks.. thats the point. Get the closest shot possible

  • http://www.slamonline.com Emry DowningHall

I missed this one, had to go to the zoo with my girls parents… I’m a little sour on that. Thanks for the recap Lang!

  • WhaHuh

Richard Jefferson for Yi was a steal for the bucks

    China were fairly turrible.
