The Post Up: Happy Birthday, Dwight

What’s an Okafor? Dwyane shows us.

What's a defender?by Holly MacKenzie

So, 41 for both Dwyane and Durant. Dwyane’s team gets the W though, so he wins that battle. It’s been said many times before, but it is so great to see him healthy again. I wish he’d be a little more careful out there because that reckless style of play catches up to you, but I guess that’s just how he does it.

What’s an Okafor? Dwyane’s dunk over Emeka was pretty amazing. Off of a steal, he comes down the lane and destroys the rim, and Okafor along with it. Wow. Sorry, Mek.

Golden State resting both Maggette and Jackson. Thank goodness they got this victory because they may have bleak days ahead if these boys are sitting.

I didn’t catch most of the Oklahoma City/Golden State game, but I did see the very end and I’m guessing that was the best part since the Thunder went on a run and threatened to take the game, but couldn’t. Of course.

Baron looked like he was going to kill someone in the Clippers/Magic game last night. He thought that Brian Cook had taken him down hard, but replays looked as though Baron just came down on his own. Any case, he had one crazy look in his eyes.

While Dwight understandably could have had a crazy look in his eyes after the Z-Bo takedown, he didn’t. He spent a couple of minutes on the ground though, then calmly got up and went to the free throw line.

We get lots of flagrants lately it seems, but this was genuinely a bad one. Zach grabbed Dwight by the shoulder/neck and just hauled him down. Hauled. It looked scary watching Dwight just go down.

Postgame, he would say it was just a hard foul. I wonder if he would have felt that way if the Magic didn’t escape LA with the victory. Either way, Happy Birthday to Dwight who had reason to celebrate last night.

I didn’t see any of the Memphis/Houston game and I’m kicking myself for missing it. Looks like the young guys played well, even though Rudy coming off of the bench was interesting. Apparently he was a few minutes late for practice so he came off of the bench. He still led them with 20, though.

Ron sat with that ankle sprain. Here’s hoping he gets healthy soon.

Tonight, we’ve got a bunch of games on the schedule, but I’m most excited for Dallas and San Antonio, Orlando and Portland and of course, Chicago and New York. When Chi and NY became teams I want and need to see each night, I’m not sure, but it has happened.

Golden State 112 Oklahoma City 102

The Warriors need to rest Stephen Jackson and his sore hand. They figured they could get away with doing it against the Thunder. In addition to Jackson, Corey Maggette also sat this one out. They were right about grabbing the victory, but while Jackson and Maggette had the night off, Kevin Durant was certainly on, dropping in 41 points on the night as he tried to will the Thunder to a win late in the game, but came up short. Down 21 in the fourth, KD helped bring Oklahoma City to within 105-102 with less than a minute left to play, he just couldn’t get them the W. Jamal Crawford led the Warriors with 19 points, while Andris Biedrins had a monster game with 17 points and 21 rebounds. Brendan Wright and Anthony Morrow each scored 15 points. Durant’s 41 points came on 27 field goal attempts and he added 10 rebounds as well. Nick Collison scored 15 points to go with 10 boards and Damien Wilkins added 10 points.

Miami 100 Charlotte 96

In a close game that saw the lead seesaw and Charlotte in control, up seven late in the fourth, Dwyane Wade recognized closing time was near and decided to get to work. Dropping in 10 points over the final quarter, he brought his team back, while also putting in 41 in another big game for the NBA scoring leader. Once he’d gotten his team back into it, he dished to Shawn Marion, to give the Heat their final lead of the night. Jason Richardson missed two free throws that would have tied the game and it was Wade who capped off the night by knocking down two free throws as the crowd chanted “MVP”. Besides Wade’s night, Mario Chalmers scored 15 points for the Heat as Shawn Marion added 13 as the Heat picked up the win despite only having 12 team assists as compared to 22 for the Bobcats. Richardson led Charlotte with 24 points while Emeka Okafor scored 19 points to go with 12 rebounds and D.J. Augustin added 13 off of the bench.

Memphis 109 Houston 97

Without Ron Artest and Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming was helpless in trying to get his Rockets the win against the hot-shooting Memphis Grizzlies last night. After the Grizz poured in a 32-point first quarter and led by 13 at the end of it, they rolled easily to the victory, never trailing and leading by as many as 22 in the game. Finishing the game with 51% shooting from the floor, Memphis had six players score in double-figures with Rudy Gay leading the way, scoring 20 points. O.J. Mayo and Hakim Warrick each added 18 points. Luis Scola led the Rockets with 16 points and 15 rebounds while Yao was held to 14 points on only 8 shot attempts. Rafer Alston scored 16 points and had 8 assists in the loss.

Orlando 94 LA Clippers 88

While the Clippers led early, it was the Magic who took control late, thanks to birthday boy Dwight Howard’s 23 points, 22 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. That’s going only 9-18 from the free throw line, as well. While the Magic led early, going ahead by as many as 15 points on the Clippers, they became lazy and allowed LA to get back into the game, taking control behind the strong play of Baron Davis. The Clippers would go ahead by as many as 9 points in the final seconds of the third before Howard and the rest of the Magic got to work. A three from Brian Cook gave Orlando the lead again with 9:41 left in the game and the Magic would go on a 22-2 run to open the quarter and break the Clippers. During that run there would be a very hard flagrant foul committed by Zach Randolph on Howard, but it did little to stop him, only slowing him for a moment. Rashard Lewis scored 18 points for the Magic as Jameer Nelson scored 15 and Hedo Turkoglu added 10. Baron led the Clippers with 27 points and 7 assists while Randolph added 21 points and 12 rebounds and Al Thornton added 13.

    First… finally :) !!!!

Holly, I know I’ve been MIA (hey, that’s kind of funny) for a minute but I enjoyed your words about Dwyane today. It’s just been a crazy month and I need to get my Post Up game back. :)

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

Durant fills it UP :) and Wade just made Emeka look like Damon Jones by LBJ

  • http://www.myfreesport.com LexaB

Great Post Up, as always my girl Holly!!!
That Zach’s fault on Dwight was indeed really scary??? Superman is a beast, when he goes up as when he goes down!!! Great line by Dwight by the way, really looking forward to tonight’s Portland-Orlando, just to see how my man Oden can do against the most dominant center in da L today!!!
Free Ron Artest’s ankle!!! Man, does Houston ever get a break from that injuries curse???
Dwyane can be really really sick (we know what’s an Okafor, now, and Okafor more than us) when he’s healthy, these days I just wanna see him getting at it against LeBron!!! Oh and by the way, no disrespect ’cause I love that kid’s intensity and game, but who remembers Michael Beasley talking about a MVP run as soon as this season??? Those kids can be funny, sometimes and (once again, B-Easy will be big, his game can bring him to the to one day)
To end it, and ’cause I will repeat it all season long, I can’t watch enough of OJ’s game!!! Nice shoot, great drives, Mayo’s game is good and exciting. Just what we love!!!

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Yes you do eboy. Yes you do.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

If Durant could just get his boards up to about 6 a game I’d respect his game a lot more. He’s a great scorer though.

  • http://www.myfreesport.com LexaB

I forgot some letters in my comment… I’m just so exhausted today, why can’t I get back in bed like… right now??? :)

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

Oh I almost forgot to add a question directly to Holly- Do you think Anthony Morrow is here to stay? And I don’t mean on the roster, I mean do you think he will be a fairly strong player in the NBA over the next decade?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I have a trade that I is crazy but isn’t Antoine Walker in the final year of his contract ? And doesn’t memphis need a point guard? And if I’m wrong I think he and Steph make the same amount of money. So why not trade them for each other? They still get the expiring deals Marbury can showcase for next year and keep the seat warm for Conley and Walker fits in well with the jacking up threes and everyone being able to handle the ball scheme. I dunno it seems like a good idea to me.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

    My comments got mixed…

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Justin, I don’t think Morrow is here to stay, for three reasons: Maggette, Jackson, (Crash) Ellis.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

Ryne, fair enough. but Maggette gets hurt more than he plays.

  • http://www.myfreesport.com LexaB

That Dwyane-Okafor’s pic is just great… That’s a real poster for ya!!!

  • http://www.hoopmixtape.com Simon S.Y Lawy

Emeka, you just don’t cry like dude names BIG BABY…

  • http://www.whl.travel Adrian

Ahh, Bryan, the last thing Memphis needs is a point…we’ve got 3, Conley, Lowry and Crittendon. None have been playing well, but I hardly think Marbury is the answer.

  • http://www.hoopmixtape.com Simon S.Y Lawy

i still prefer kobe over superman 4 years ago.
KOBE: rookie, suck my ball and welcome to the NBA.

  • ENDS

    Welcome back eboy

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Thanks ENDS….I wish I could say I’ll be better than before….but I’d be lying, I guess.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Justin, Morrow is in the NBA to stay, just maybe not too much longer in Oakland. His stroke is too nice and needed in the league.

CUB SCOUTS POST ON THE WAY!

  • http://www.ojhoops.blogspot.com the baconator

I was glad to hear Hakim Warrick had a good game last night. I always thought he was never really given a fair chance; it seems like every time he gets playing time he does good things with it. He was such a fun player to watch in college…

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

CUB POST TO THE RESCUE?! BUMP FOR GREAT JUSTICE! Where do you think Anthony needs to be teamwise?

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

You owe me $0.37 for each “what’s an Okafor?” A check is fine.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Any team thin on backcourt depth or in need of perimeter shooting.
In other words, most teams. He should, though, avoid being scorer on bottom team; rather play the role guy for a top one.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

    Kareem Rush, anyone?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

It should also be noted that Okafor has been terrible this season. So,you know,Karma and all that.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

Cub: So, the Heat, the Mavs, the Nets, the Bobcats and the Clips?

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Eboy: Good win, our team was without Gerald Wallace, his grandmother passed (Ryne said that it wasnt ‘Newsworthy’ for this site, so i will state that now as the reason G-Force wasnt their). Also, Holly DJ lost the game for us when he missed a layup by himself, and him and Raymond gunning 3s and freezing Okafor (who was having a good game, scored 10 strait points in the 3rd quarter) out in the 4th. I was annoyed. Gotta give Wade props for the dunk, but Okafor had a swat on Beasley that was just as nasty. Lets add this up: No Wallace+Stupid plays by DJ and Ray Ray+Dwayne Wade= Bobcats loss

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

But the DJ Augstin to Shannon Brown alley oop was nice, and Ajinca proved he has lots of potential. Thats all.

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

    “H to the Izzo says:
It should also be noted that Okafor has been terrible this season. So,you know,Karma and all that.” This is by far the dumbest thing you ever said. A couple of nasty dunks on you by a established super star (wade) and a future scrub (JJ ‘that b@st@rd’ Hickson) does not ruin your season. He is averaging 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game, nothing bad about that. It is not great, but its not ‘terrible’ like you stated. Also, Emeka has only scored under 19 points 1 time this month, and has had 2 25 point 10+ rebound games, and he is the reason the game was even competiative last night anyway, so Izzo, please dont say dumb sh!t like that anymore. Much love,

    BETCATS

  • MSkittle

Chill with that “Whats an Okafor?” joke. First, with JJ Hickson in the magazine and now with D Wade?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Emeka has been turrible this season.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

BET:Let me know how your 12 and 10 Franchise player works out.ALso,let me know how happy you are with him while you’re paying him 12mil a year when you could be getting the same output from David Lee for 900k.

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Really? How? Because you were at the game, right Eboy? Even a ‘buffon/babbon hybrid’ like yourself could have witnessed him score 10 strait points on your ‘defence’. And considering that his ‘Power Forwards’ are Sean May and Jared Dudley, 2 guys that cannot even dunk, and Dwayne Jones/Alexis Ajinca look lost every time they step out on the floor, Emeka has a pretty huge load to handle. Let me put this in terms a White Hot Eboy like yourself can understand: If you got a team of janitors, but only 1 can actually mop and vacum, your building is gonna be dirty no matter how hard one janitor works.

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

    LOL!!!

I didn’t even know Emeka Okafor was still in the NBA until last night.

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Now Izzo: Our franchies player? HAHAHA, maybe is rookie season, when he won the ROY, since? That title is Gerald Wallce’s (WHO DIDNT PLAY LAST NIGHT). Please stop false assertions like “Emeka is the franchise” because thats not the case.

And I’ll write my reply to BETCATS even before he responds to my 11:49 post: “No, I seriously thought dude was injured or something for the last 2 seasons. I had NO idea he was actively playing in the league.”

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

And it’s really as simple as:Underperforming on a really bad team=playing terriby.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Oh and BET, after Emeka’s historic 10 point scoring run, it’s funny how you failed to mention him missing a layup that could have tied the game during that same stretch ending perhaps the greatest scoring barrage in NBA history.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

In terms of efficiency and output for the Bobcats,Okafor is slightly ahead of Adam Morrison and behind four other players.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Izzo, I actually posted something today on our blog, you know, because I’ve been out of sorts.

  • WhaHuh

OJ Mayo better (scoring) rookie than Larry Bird and currently equal to Magic’s rookie season.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

WhaHuh, the streak is tied with Magic’s most games consecutive in double digits to start out the rookie year, nice stat drop man! OJ is the TRUTH

  • ciolkstar

Okafor started the year playing terribly but has really picked it up over the last month. He’s still a low level starter/great backup in the NBA.
OJ Mayo might be scoring as much as Magic did as a rookie, but he plays for the (lowly) memphis Grizz and is their unquestioned leader offensively (Sorry, Rudy Gay). Magic came to a stacked Laker team (Kareem Abdul Jabbar anyone?) that contended for a title. OJ is playing VERY well but those type of comparisons aren’t helpful or accurate at all.

  • ciolkstar

…Plus Magic would actually, you know, PASS the rock….

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

Morrow will be in the L, whether it’s GS or not, I do not know. Russ, you keep your eyes open for that cheque. haha

Good stuff Holly. I miss the old 350+ Post Up sections…
