Anthony Davis, James Harden Added to Team USA Training Camp Roster

Yesterday, reports surfaced that Kentucky big man and projected No. 1 NBA Draft Pick Anthony Davis would be joining the USA Basketball program this summer. Well, it’s official—and he has company. James Harden will join Davis as the duo were added to the Training Camp roster for Team USA, according to multiple sources. Per NBC Sports’ Pro Basketball Talk: “Anthony Davis could go straight from winning a national championship with Kentucky to winning an Olympic gold medal with Team USA. Davis, along with Oklahoma City guard James Harden, has been added to the pool of potential candidates that could be selected to represent the United States in London, USA Basketball President Jerry Colangelo announced. “After a lot of deliberations, after reviewing our roster, we think these two additions strengthen our National Team program immeasurably. James Harden probably is the sixth man of the year in the NBA, and Anthony Davis brings a dimension to our pool we don’t have. He’s young, but it’s exciting to think about the possibilities,” Colangelo said in a released statement. Team USA has been rocked by injuries. Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose, LaMarcus Aldridge and Chauncey Billups are all out with injuries. Also, Lamar Odom has been removed from consideration after his lost season. That dropped the pool of 20 down to 15, so this adds some depth to choose from. Harden’s high-IQ game and playmaking skills should fit well in international ball. Davis doesn’t have the polished offense of some other Team USA bigs (Kevin Love, Chris Bosh) but he is a good defender and athlete. Davis along with Tyson Chandler could form a defensive stopper back line for stretches. The other players in the pool of potential Team USA members are: Guards: Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Russell Westbrook, Kobe Bryant, Eric Gordon. Forwards: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Blake Griffin, Kevin Love, Andre Iguodala, Rudy Gay. Center: Tyson Chandler. Team USA will be selected at a training camp that starts in early July in Las Vegas.”

    PG: Paul, Williams
    SG: Wade, Kobe
    SF: Lebron, Melo, Durant
    PF: Bosh, Love
    C: Chandler

They should take Westbrook (He played well at the Worlds and Davis) but Griffin probably gets one of those spots even though he has no business being on the team

What? No Javale McGee? Silver here we come

  • Rik Smits Mullet

i havent watched a lot of college games. Only one with anthony davis but is this guy so for real that he gets a chance to join the elite of nba basketball before playing a game in the nba ?

  • bike

Davis is the best defensive big man to come out of college in 10 years. He’s a lock to be an All-Star in a couple of years. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say he’s a better defender than Bosh or Love.

it will be really tuff for harden to make it, but i can see his game being a good fit for fiba ball

  • Fresh Boiardee

    Davis!?! Is Bynum not available?

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@Fresh. Yes, Bynum said he’s out for the Olympics. So he is not available.

I kinda want them to have some combo of westbrook, gordon and steph curry. maybe not steph tho, i don’t think he did that well in worlds.

  • jpm34

Is the NBA that starved for big men that Davis gets a spot? He don’t belong, just like Laettner didn’t deserve to be on the original dream team. Gotta pay some dues son!!

  • dma

im surprised there’s no hibbert or greg monroe getting invitations. maybe should consider javale and jordan if they’re that desperate for big men. maybe going to the olympics will open up javale’s eyes some.

cosign dma, greg monroe needs to get some love yo. That dude is so underrated its sickening.

  • http://Facebook.com/tronjohnson Chief

Cosign DMA hibbert and Monroe can’t get no love.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

RIGGS, Chief, Monroe is nice, but he is not a great defender and his low block game isn’t so great that he would be needed for team USA. I would like Melo, Bron, Kobe, D-Wade on the low block over Monroe.

Monroe is second only to Chandler of available Centers. Check the link. The title of this story should begin with Harden’s name #paiddues Davis should also get a spot on the team … it is tradition, no?

  • Matt Park

Harden is an excellent player and I am very happy he got this… He is really a complete player, extremely efficient.

Anthony Davis has every single NCAA BBall Award under the Sun. What sets him apart from the other PF’s and C’s out there was that he was a former Point Guard, for those who don’t know yet. So his ability to run the floor, catch any lob you throw at him with his 7 ft 4 wingspan, pass inside the paint quickly, and of course block everything can give international players a real headache, especially when USA plays defense.

  • robb

The olympic beard. I like it.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

well i cant disagree, i like these additions… james harden is as versitile as they come and davis & chandler on the same team?!??! its nice to see that team usa will also be looking for solid defence instead of mainly offence

Wow, that experience is gonna make that kid so much better. Fej is absolutely right.

  • cbb_fanatic

@Fej——–Thank you for letting these non-college basketball watching commentators on here know that this kid got skills. He’s versatile, can play both great offense and defense, and playing on the team is going to help him even more in getting acclimated to the NBA. You take the experience he will gain and add that to an already great skill set, and what you have is a beast!!! The only sad thing about Davis is that he’s going to the Bobcats. But this can be an opportunity for him to get another award under his belt if he can help them win at least 10 games. LOL. He’ll be ROY.

  • GanjahLuv

Demarcus over any available big, eats Monroe and Hibbert alive.

  • TMay

Hibbert played for Jamaica in some event like last gear so I’m pretty sure he’s ineligible to play for the u.s. this year

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Someone please save Anthony Davis from the Bobcats.

  • DruNyce

Davis? Sigh…. are they really that desperate? How do they overlook Cousins, Monroe, & Hibbert? C’mon man …

  • Top$helf

We tryna get tht gold medal so paying dues is irrelevant Chandler and Davis at the 5 is ideal 2 guys who can change a game defensively that won’t complain about not having plays ran for them they got enough offense wit Lebron Kobe Wade Melo and so on

  • http://www.borntocompete.com Money$hot

They need to drop Lamar Odom!

  • GanjahLuv

Odom is toast. Davis will suprise folks, watch!

  • jayb

good news..so i guess AD signs with nike than?? with howard and rose out…the whole team is nike or jordan…i love it!

  • Rob

The whole world has to witness that unibrow?

  • Cameron

I don’t believe the hype until he plays an NBA season or 2. And yes, I’ve watched plenty of college games this season and seen him play.

  • GanjahLuv

Ok FLava flav. LEt him simmer in the pros for 2 years, gain some weight and strength, then stand back!
