Deron Williams Thinks He Might Need Offseason Ankle Surgery

Even if a recent cortisone shot has the Brooklyn Nets’ point guard feeling much better, Deron Williams’ bum left wheel may go under the knife once the season is over. Per the NY Daily News: “Encouraged by the results of a cortisone shot, Deron Williams believes he will regain the explosiveness that has been glaringly missing in preseason. Still, the tendinitis in his ankle is severe enough that the Nets’ star said he ‘might’ need postseason surgery to ’clean it up.’ […] ‘Just walking down the street it would ache,’ said Williams, who received the shot Thursday. ‘There were a lot of missed layups because I just didn’t have that explosion. I should be good now.’ […] ‘It was hurting really bad in the Olympics, swelled up in the Olympics. So, I had to get on some anti-inflammatory (pills) and we’ve been just trying to strengthen it and get it loose,’ Williams said. ‘But it just seems like throughout the course of a game, it never gets loose.I thought it was from old age,’ he added. ‘I couldn’t jump off my left leg. I can’t even dunk off of one leg, so I went in and got an MRI and it showed the inflammation. It was good to get the shot and now it already feels better.’”

surgery wouldn’t fix that. how do you “clean up” tendinitis? anybody?

  • Da-Meat-Hook

To my understanding, it’s rest, ice, deep tissue massage, and ultrasound to break down scar tissue.

yes that is the only way i know to treat tendinitis.

When D-wade had knee tendinitis in 2008 I believe he went and got surgery and the next year he was explosive again

No, Wade had OssaTron treatment on his knee. Not surgery.

Here is the description of OssaTron treatment —-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OssaTron

Depends on what kind of tendonitis he has. My guess is that its accumulation of scar tissue and other debris, which can be scraped away from the ankle with arthroscopic surgery. Surgery is the logical next step after injections.

scar tissue and debris aren’t tendinitis. you mean to make room for the tendons to be more flexible they will remove the soft tissue surrounding them? There is not seperate types of tendinitis in terms of how it effects the joint, the different types are in terms of location and severity. Like Chronic (repetitive) Achilles Tendinitis or Acute Achilles Tendinitis.

I have had Chronic Tendinitis in my Left Rotator Cuff since I was 15, never has surgery been an option to relieve me of pain aside from repairing the actual demage to the tendons and ligaments. I am just interested in finding out as much information as possible

The cortisone shot may be all that is needed. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Depends on what is causing the inflammation. One thing for certain, since it’s in his ankle, playing b-ball ‘aint gonna do it any good.
