Tina Charles Diary 2

Hey SLAM Fam!

All-Star weekend was amazing! The entire game I just wanted to shoot threes and have a lot of fun. It was an amazing experience. I had a blast playing with Shoni Schimmel. I had a chance to catch her documentary Off The Rez recently, and it was great to play alongside her and discuss how far she has came in her journey to the WNBA.

Our game against the Washington Mystics on July 29 was a special one for me, as it was Breast Health Awareness Night, presented by Delta Air Lines. We wore the pink jerseys in honor of those fighting against breast cancer. It hits home for me, as my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. My aunt, who I have my organization after, was also a breast cancer survivor. It’s in my family so we always make sure to get screened. It’s important for the community to know about it and understand what the WNBA is trying to do, which is spread awareness on this issue.

Recently we added Swin Cash and Natasha Lacy. Swin has had a huge impact since her arrival. She brings a lot of energy to this team. She has won numerous championships and knows how to win big games. Lacy has been a good addition as well. She loves to get out there and defend.

There has been a big change in the product we have put on the floor in the second half of the season. In the first half, we were still trying to figure things out. We were carving out our identity and looking to build confidence in the system. Now we have a lot more confidence and players know their role on the team. The little things are falling into place and everyone is coming into their own.

On a lighter note, I am a huge jazz fan, I go to a lot of jazz-based events. One of my favorite songs is “You Are Too Beautiful” by John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. A lot of times if I have my headphones on, jazz is playing.

‘Til next time,
Tina Charles
