Ball in the U.S.A.

By Sam Rubenstein

flagWell, here’s the gang of fifteen, as promised. Of course the photo has about 40 people in it, but the roster is on that page. I never gave much thought to this latest attempt at U.S. world domination, but now I’m into it. Tonight I’ll probably create the new roster and the Athens roster with 2K6 and go head to head. I will have to be the new team and punish the old one for their failures in the past. The new team gets LeBron, Wade, Carmelo, and Amare. Old team, you’re in trouble.
Also, we need a good nickname for this Team USA. The Dream Team was a one shot deal.

I don’t know what’s stranger about this column, that it’s entirely devoted to Team USA bad boy Brad Miller, or the first two sentences. Observe:

LAS VEGAS — The city council recently passed an ordinance making it a crime to feed the homeless in city parks. The mayor who once defended mob bosses has proposed chopping off the thumbs of local graffiti artists.

Yeah. VEGAS BABY!

Moving on, It’s been a morning and afternoon of Vegas-like craziness for me. I woke up this morning with a lot of stiffness in my right knee thanks to some hard running out on the softball field. Not the end of the world, and it’s not even enough to make me limp. I made some coffee at home, wrote my Team USA post, and then drove my car to the mechanic because the brakes have been making terrible noises. Later I found out that the pads have been worn out and it’s just metal on metal. Not good. I had to run back home, which surpisingly got the twinge out of my knee. Got on the train and headed to midtown for some SLAM business.

I spent about an hour talking hoops with one of the most influential musicians of the past 15 years. Can’t say who it is just yet, but I can tell you that I learned alot, and he’s someone that was once more controversial than a televised fight-to-the-death Royal Rumble of Kobe, A-Rod, T.O., and Barry Bonds. We’ll have the audio of the interview up at some point. I can’t wait to post it and you can’t wait to hear it.
I have hidden a hint as to the identity of the artist in question somewhere in this post.
