Baron Davis Waived By Cavs, Could Be Out 2 Months

BD is free. Call him fat, injury-prone, a knucklehead, or anything else, but when Baron’s healthy and motivated, dude can play. The Cavs, however, needed the cap space—and more importantly, the floor time for No. 1 pick Kyrie Irving. So Davis’ contract went the way of the amnesty clause last night. According to the AP: “Using the NBA’s new amnesty clause, the Cavs waived Davis, a move that knocks the $28 million he is owed over the next two seasons off the salary cap. The Cavs will have to pay Davis, but they’ll have more flexibility going forward as they try to improve a team that won just 19 games last season…The 32-year-old had not practiced since arriving at camp because of a bulging back disc. Davis left the team last weekend to get a second opinion on his back.” Assuming Davis clears waivers and becomes a free agent, possible destinations include the New York Knicks. Then again, Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports reports that Baron’s back will keep him out up to 10 weeks, so any team that picks him up will have to wait well into the season for his services.
