Ben Wallace Still Debating Return to Pistons

by July 21, 2012

Ben Wallace has been mulling retirement for a long time. In February, Big Ben said the ’11-12 season “is definitely my last year“; but earlier this month, a source indicated there was “a pretty good chance” of Wallace returning; and this week, Wallace told a Richmond, VA, TV station that he’s still “50/50” about returning for another year with the Pistons. If the four-time DPOY decides to return, Detroit would likely have to make a trade to create a roster spot (via the Free-Press): “While fans await news on whether Ben Wallace will return for his 17th season, he shed some light on the situation this week in Virginia. Speaking with Richmond, Va., TV station WTVR, he said he is “50-50″ about returning to the Pistons. According to the report, Wallace was preparing to participate in a summer league he sponsors, and he indicated his performance would help him decide. ‘I’ll be out here,’ Wallace said. ‘How much of a player (he still is) remains to be seen.’ When the Pistons sign second-round draft pick Khris Middleton, they will have a full roster of 15 players under contract, so they would have to create a roster spot — likely via a trade for a draft pick. With the Pistons in a full-blown youth movement, the organization likely is mulling whether to bring Wallace back.”
