Chris Bosh may idolize Tim Duncan, but he doesn’t want to stick around the game as long as Duncan (soon-to-be 38) has. Bosh, always planning ahead, says he’ll call it quits in six years. Per the Palm Beach Post:
“I don’t want to play that long,” Bosh said after Miami’s shootaround (Thursday) at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. “I said I was always going to play until I’m 36. That’s 17 years of basketball. I think that’s a lot. Tim and Ray (Allen), the fact that they can play and keep their bodies fit and defy the wear and tear is pretty cool. I take pages out of their book just to get me to the finish line, then after that I’ll sit back watch.”
Bosh turns 30 in a few weeks and is averaging 16.6 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and a career-high 36.6 percent on 3-pointers.
“When I came into the league, I always said I wanted to play until I’m 36,” he said. “The way I see it, I don’t think I’m like those guys. If I’m playing until I’m 38 it’ll be one of those say-it-ain’t-so moments. I don’t want that. I want to retire a very good player.”
The media prodded to see if this was set in stone and even bordered on trying to convince him to reconsider. Nope. He is definitely probably going to retire in six years unless he changes his mind.
“We’ll see,” he said. “Absolutely. No, I get it. But I can’t predict the future. It’s just what I’m saying right now. Maybe when I’m 36 I’ll try to still be holding on and if somebody offers me a deal, maybe that’ll change. But that’s always been a goal of mine, my dream. Time’s ticking.”
So what is he going to do after that? More Hollywood stuff?
“I don’t know,” he said. “Basketball is awesome, but there’s other things, too, and that fascinates me.”
