Jerry West Would Have Left the Lakers Through Free Agency

Jerry West, in his impassioned defense of Kevin Durant’s free agency, says he would have bolted from Los Angeles during his own playing days had the opportunity presented itself.

West, like most Lakers players, did not love working under team owner Jack Kent Cooke.

West told KD to follow his heart this summer.

Per the TK Show (via NBC):

“I remember years ago, if I had an opportunity to leave the Lakers I would have left, for one reason: because I did not like an owner that was not telling me the truth.

“It would have made no difference what they would have offered me, I would have left. It’s easy to say after the fact, but players have earned the right to go where they want to go.”
