Mark Cuban Thinks ‘Greedy’ NFL Will Implode Within 10 Years

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban attacked the NFL’s business model on Sunday, predicting that the most popular sport in America would be dead within the next decade. Cuban claims that pro football has gotten too greedy for its own good (and survival.) Per the Star-Telegram and Dallas Morning News:

“I think the NFL is 10 years away from implosion, so I’m looking forward to that,” Cuban said.

“When pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered,” Cuban said. “And they’re getting hoggy. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way. I’m just telling you, when you got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns against you.”

The NFL’s move to Thursday night was one thing. But now the league will have at least two Saturday games and there is speculation that there will be Wednesday NFL action as well. That’s a recipe for disaster, Cuban believes.

“They’re trying to take over every night of TV,” he said. “And initially, it’ll be the biggest rating thing there is. Then, if they get Saturday, now they’re impacting college. And then if they go to Wednesday, at some point, people get sick of it.”

Cuban knows the power of fantasy football and how big of a player that is in the NFL’s success. But it’s not as big as TV ratings, which have been huge no matter what night of the week the game is on.

But Cuban did bring up a powerful point about fans not necessarily wanting to see their teams play on Wednesday or Thursday or Saturday.

“It drives you in a different direction,” he said. “Now, it’s ‘my team’s game is on Wednesday.’ Or, ‘now my team’s on Thursday.’ It was just so easy when I could plan on Sunday or maybe Monday. And if you get no days off in football and your team is playing one of those days, it’s just one of the rules I use: when pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. Fantasy football, people pay attention to it. But we’ll see.”
